Based on what? Every week waiting for him is us treading water. He goes head to head with Benteke for top strikers outside the big sides (and Everton). I'd rather have him than Torres, Eto'o or Ba. A 24 year old Englishman for £15m is very good business. And that's a fact, there's no questioning that really if you look at history and market valuations.Champagne_Socialist wrote:Carroll is not worth 15 million. Eto'o was a free transfer and is 2nd choice striker at Chelsea.kingraf wrote:Would never prefer Carroll to Eto'o, even in his diminished state
We need to compare Carroll for other players bought for roughly 15 mil to see who one would prefer. Bony, Michu, Giroud, walcott, Jesus navas, alvaro negredo, defoe, sturridge, benteke, lukaku, loic remy,

No we don't. We're comparing him to other strikers in this league. I'd rather have Carroll than Eto'o, Eto'o is nothing to what he was and would not be worth having in a team with supply lines that don't cost 100s of millions.
Of the list above, I'd have Carroll over pretty much all of them at West ham. Maybe not Lukaku, level with Benteke for me. Different clubs different needs, but it strikes me of forming opinions on the back of over hearing a retarded dog talk football. I'd doubt either of you watch any west ham, I'm sure you think we just knock it long and Sam sits on a tennis umpires chair so he can see some of the ball, so I have no need to discuss it further.

Carroll's not the quickest, or most natural goal scorer, but I bet he's a pain in the arse to mark. Gimme Torres any day.

Eto'o scored 37 goals in his last season at Inter, and was rated the #1 forward in Russia for the last two years. Sure he may not be the tour de force he once was, but I have seen nothing that indicates Carroll of all people eclipsed him

It was to the two stated, and i stand by it. Why would they have? We're not a big club on TV all month long. But you were just immature. You want my reasoning or do you want to snide like some self entitled Kumquat?
I was quite continually arguing on different clubs different needs. I do think Benteke gets credit on top of it too for being foreign and thus cooler on the Internet. Benteke's technique can be lacking, I don't think he's aerially dominating enough for someone of his frame, he can go quiet in games whereas Carroll never does. Carroll hasn't Benteke's pace but I think his technique is underrated and more consistently present. Benteke's ceiling is probably higher, but I'm not sure he'll definitely reach it.

Just seen the last two goals in the Citeh-Chelski game, fair to say neither GK covering themselves in glory there. Cech woefully out of position for the Aguero goal, and Hart's gone walkies at the end there

Oh Eto'o was the best striker in Italy a few years ago and was the best striker in Russia? A league where it was well noted he played a diminished striking role to play off the top a lot. And has looked sketchy at Chelsea? Bow down at his feet, if he were once good I must rate him forever! Wish we'd signed Pele.

Re: Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread
First of all they'll get a 5 minute minimum segment weekly. Most teams will be lucky to get more than a 30 goal highlights package. So stop with the whole West Ham are some obscure team talk. Nobody in the PL is obscure these days.
I saw Benteke take over games in a poor team last season in ways I've never seen Carroll. He's had moments but typically when I watch him when he comes across as your typical target man. Strong, bullies CBs, but on the flip side lacking technically and misses too many chances.
Stop the tantrum, it demeans both of us

I thought we were being facetious, I wanted to get involved!
It's not a tantrum, although I am genuinely frustrated that I can make a point and people can just pick whatever they want and decide to argue a whole new point.
Again, we're not obscure, but you're watching a motd snippet of half these teams these days and a lot of live football for the rest. You'd be naive to suggest otherwise. I'd also argue if you haven't seen Carroll run games for us then you haven't watched us. Indeed, he doesn't miss an awful amount of chances because we don't make a lot unless he's making them. It suits us very well, but then is take Benteke every day of the week at Spurs or a Chelsea.
But don't demean my words and expect fully salient argument.

Being effective and being a good player aren't the same.
See fellani for Everton and united.
Carroll isn't a very good player, but he is effective for big Sam with 2 players bought to cross it to him.
Remember kevin Davies was effective for big Sam.

Benteke is all the rage because he is a Belgium.
As I said start of the season he is on par with Sturridge and not the holy grail ..
Both top 2nd tier strikers at present.. But tbh I actually prefer giroud and Carroll . For different reasons..

I think everyone forgets how good Carroll has been in the past.
The 35 mill tag has dimensioned him into a kind of joke category.. Because he was never worth it and now people totally devalue him as a result.. He was however certainly worth 20 m at the time. It's just Liverpool got screwed over due to the Torres deal...
That deal was the devils work. Both players turned into shells of there former selves. Luckily both seem to be making strides again.

I think Carroll is a decent player.
Tekkers was quality in a ( sadly) poor Villa side last seasn
Started this season great till the injury.
Hopefully he back to top form at Upton Park.
He does have his off days, as does any player.
There have been times when i've watched him, where he gets beaten in the air to easily for a big strong guy.
On the whole he is a very good player.
Big pat on the back for Lambert for signing him.

Indeed, I think he's a hell of a player and Lambert has not been given enough credit for some of the players he has bought and introduced. For all that villa haven't made huge strides in the table under Lambert, I'd take that for being able to watch a team brimming with potential. Being a football fan is an arduous task at times, clinging on to the kind of positives that Lambert brings makes it bearable

Lambert is a class manager.
I have a soft spot for villa.. Bit of a gutting result at the weekend though. Those are the games when you need your star striker to nick a goal.
But then it must be siad that Everton are a high quality team at the moment. They wont get stuffed by any team, top 6 for me!

This is the same manager who was basically putting his name in the mix for the PSG job in the summer. AVB knows what he's doing. Jump ship from club to club getting ridiculous pay-offs. How much did he get from Chelsea & how much would he get from Spurs if they sacked him. I saw the game, atmosphere in parts was like a morgue, agree Spurs aren't playing that great football but their currently in the top 4.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Oh dear young Andre Villa Boas is insulting Spurs fans and telling those people who shell out money they probably can't really afford, to support the team better......

The ref shouldn't have disallowed it. What should have happened was that Norwich allow Cardiff to score a free goal, thus tying the game at 1-1 and drawing me level with the gits who shared the sky sports super 6 £10k jackpot (I think)
