First topic message reminder :
Belgium have not impressed me at all, lack cohesion. I think that under Klinsmann, the USA are tactically superior and will pick Belgium on a counter attack.

Am I the only one that keeps forgetting it's Danny Murphy on commentary, and not Lawro?

Not a better team in this competition to defend crosses into the box.

Just wish the English team showed as much heart and commitment as the Americans did.

Wonderful game. Absorbing, packed with tension and excitement, and enough drama to last a tournament.
Belgium just better, but USA gave it their all.

Fantastic extra time.
USA another team to show more passion than England.
31 teams to do that now?

If only the US had a striker. It's a great pity Donovan retired... what's that you say? he isn't retired, but the coach felt the need to drop him so he could prove who was the big boss? Oops. Klinsmann really should be fired... A team as limited as the States couldn't drop their best forward on non-footballing grounds!!

Tbf, has grinding to this sort of stage while showing commitment and going out to the first good team we play not been a hallmark for England lately?Hero wrote:Just wish the English team showed as much heart and commitment as the Americans did.
USA made it interesting late, but they were pretty poor through 105 minutes.

Oh god, the "passion" debate. I hope they hit 72 cries (the official measurement) of passions, which is still lower than Brazil's national anthem who hit 200 cries of passions.

If we're going with how good their team spirit was, and Donovan affecting that, then maybe it was the best decision he's made. Much like no Nasri for France, looked stupid when Ribery was injured but seems to have worked out.

You'd think USA had just done Istanbul V2 the way the Beeb are going on about it.
Team gets a goal, grabs momentum. Its not exactly unheard of.

The thing is they think they have one...The states is Jozy crazy!
Anyway it was like watching my time play and i knew it would be. Merica is a proper team full of mediocre players. Belgium lacked finishing but looked great in the build up.. Luckily lukaka came on and basically told his manager- Start me next time!!
I wonder what Mourinhio will do - He must be thinking about him now surely.

Lukaku wasn't very good in the group stage. 1 15 minute burst against a team that struggled to defend on fresh legs is unlikely to move Jose.

Exactly. Lukaku's value has gone down this World Cup. Shown he's still mainly potential

Enjoyed the game, felt for USA.
If it wasn't for Howard, then could have been 3/4.
Really thought they would get the second.
Great spirit, determination.
Also great support from the americans, in Brazil & back in the states.
Dang, they had some honey's in the crowd.
Well done USA.
One last time.
USA USA USA.
Well that just leaves one team I have interest in now.
Up to Holland now.

It seems like yellow cards carry right through the tournament. I think there should have been an amnesty after the first round. It would be cruel if a player missed out on the final because he got booked in the first game and then the semi. In theory, a team could have 13 out of the 23 suspended if the 11 players and the 3 subs all got booked while carrying one previous card.

Personally think Origi looks a better than Lukaku, he's had a belter of a tournament.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
Tim Howard's heroics in USA's World Cup round of 16 defeat to Belgium have led to a White House petition to rename an American airport after him.
Supporters want to rebrand Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after the Everton stopper, but a further 98,000 signatures are needed if the plan is to be considered.
Anyone can post a petition on the US government's 'We the People' website and if 100,000 signatures are gathered, the administration will respond.

Yes but he had a great game.
Heard he made the most saves in a world cup match since 66.
I hope soccer in the US gets even bigger by the time 2018 comes around.
And that they manage to get a couple quality players.

he did ok and made 16 saves- but most were just fluffed shots- Belgium really badly performed in front of goal.

They'll need them if the poor Keeper had to save so many shots!

Nobody gives a crap that the Ivory Coast had some supposedly dodgy calls against them.
Which is fair enough because nobody does.

Cameroon and Ghana were awful.
Ivory Coast choked a game in which they only had to draw.
Algeria lost because they missed a boatload of chances.
Nigeria got beat by a better team.

Apparently it's all because they're an African side, not like Croatia, England and a host of other european sides have been on the receiving end of poor decisions.
