Re: Summer Transfer Window
When you consider how far their respective stars have fallen, surely Torres is worse going from perhaps the best striker on the planet to a bloke who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a spade.
Once every man and his dog knew Liverpool had £50 million quid it was a case of "bung another £10 million on our guys quickly". Carroll had just scored two against Liverpool and looked a bit of a beast. Torres couldn't have looked less interested if he'd taken out his mobile phone and started filming his privates during matches.
£35 million for a striker with potential was just crazy. Poor lad then got injured and was told by the new manager before he'd had a chance to prove himself that he wasn't a part of his plans. Not really a flop as he wasn't given a chance under the new regime whereas as Torres went 19(?) games without scoring which for such a previously prolific striker was absolutely shocking.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
At least with Torres he had done something in the past to justify such a fee.
Carroll had 1 good season in the Championship, half a good PL season and Liverpool made him the most expensive English player at the time. Torres was a year or so earlier one of the best strikers on the planet and Chelsea gambled he'd regain his fitness.
For me spending 35m on Carroll was worse than 50m on Torres.

West Ham are 1/10 to sign Alex Song. Probably on loan. Good signing if it comes off.

Interesting player song.
Was fairly pants at defending his final season, was one of Arsenals best attackers that one season. Played the ball for that RVP volley if memory served

I'd go with that. If you halved each of their fees, then, at the time, you'd have said Torres was a bargain, but you'd have still said that Carroll was expensive.

He's a player I keep thinking Man United should sign, yet I actually don't care that much because I'd rather watch Noble play. I'm more interested in potential links to Micah Richards

Apparently Leicester agreed a fee for McArthur then pulled out when their month long move for Cambiasso finally got signed.

He kept lofting balls over defenses for RVP to volley in. I think he scored 2 or 3 that season just from loted balls from Song.

Isn't it likely both will play, with Kouyate moving to centre back to partner Reid?

I'm not sure Song is the guy.
At this stage, they should just pony up for De Jong and reassess in 12 month time. He'll do at least a comparative job to Flamini

It would be a huge loss, really would, Kouyate already looks the best player in our team by a distance. As Vieira esque as I've ever seen.

I know transfer rumours are always very tenuous, but the Champions League draw should put the kibosh on a couple. Arsenal getting either Reus or Papastathopoulos, and Chelsea getting Carvalho have to become even less likely. I guess Bayern will be pleased to have wrapped up Benatia before the draw.

Has to go down as the worst transfer of all time, running at a loss of £50mil plus wages of almost £50mil too for what was effectively that one goal against Barcelona.

I love how reporters have the quickest glance possible at a players wikipedia page to get their information, do they not realise that the stats on the side only refer to the league?

I refer you to one season of Ibra at Barca
Don't think that will topped in a while. Besides Carroll was worse. As I say at least there was a reason for Torres excessive fee.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Liverpool recouped a fair chunk of the £35mil they paid on Carroll and were only paying his wages for 18 months, the resale value is a factor.
Torres looked done before he even signed for Chelsea, was having a poor season only saved by scoring twice against them.

To be fair he also hit the shot that set up the corner that led to the equaliser in Munich. Didn't he also score a crucial goal in the Europa?

And Chelsea gamble was he would get over his injury. He never did unfortunately.
I'd rather gamble on the world class striker than the guy with half a season in the top flight.

It's also pretty relative. Veron was pretty bad, Bebe is so hard to understand, Ali Dia is the pinnacle of nonsense, Alou Diarra was such a waste of space at our place

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Veron just didn't adapt to the pace of the league, he always looked pretty good when we played in Europe but unfortunately we had the ginger prince who was simply better than he was. It gets overplayed a bit how bad he was for us and I never understood the deal myself because we didn't need him but he was one of the best in the world and did Ok.
One day I think we'll find out something rather unsavoury about the Bebe deal, it's so odd that it has to be bent there's no other explanation, we could have got him for free weeks earlier.

Anyone remember Xisco? Signed for about £6m, spent like four-and-a-half years at Newcastle & the Spaniard was on £50K/week. He only played for us only just over ten times. £11M is the apparently how much he received in wages from the club over that time period.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Interesting theory about the Bebe deal.
Shock summer signing Bebe moves to UTD for £7.4m – Baffles everyone at OT and around the world why we paid so much for an unknown & unseen player on the recommendation of Ferguson’s former assistant and Portugal’s then coach, Carlos Queiroz and local Scouts.
So here goes…. During the WC… Nani is mysteriously sent home with a supposed shoulder injury sustained in training…. hours before a “surprise” visit from the Drug Testers. Nani who had unknowingly (i like to imagine) taken some performance enhancing drugs is going to fail the test and be banned indefinitely for 8-12months…. UTD and Portugal lose out big time!
Knowing the issue… SAF the grand old wizard convinces Queiroz to remove Nani with the injury and also create distractions and problems with the Drug Testers allowing Nani to leave and avoid consequences of a ban.
As a result… Quieroz is later fined and investigated and subsequently dismissed from post. SAF scurries across to Portugal to his defence as character reference. Knowing he will lose his post but grateful for the deed in allowing Nani to escape punishment…. SAF then pays £7.4m for an unknown player called Bebe.
Where does it fit together…. well Bebe’s agent to broker the deal is non other than Jorge Mendes… who is also the agent of Carlos Queiroz. Put 2 & 2 together – Mendes cuts out former agent Gonçalo Reis, who had represented Bebé when he moved to Vitória and brokers the £7.4m deal to UTD…. of which a huge proportion goes to Queiroz for getting Nani off the hook….. and obviously some to Mendes for brokering…. and we get an unknown quantity in Bebe…. who may well be decent player or a complete flop…
…..bottom of the story is… it was all about paying Queiroz off for his drug test evasion tactics for Nani….

Interesting theory were it not for the fact Nani would have had to take the test regardless or be banned just like Rio was, it definitely has something to do with Queiroz though, not that i'm that bothered he did mastermind us to Moscow in 2008.

Surprising, but he obviously wants to go back home to his former club & win trophies for a club he dearly loves. What is he 30? He's a multi-millionaire, I think it was Barcelona or nothing for Agger, in terms of staying around in the top leagues. Good luck to him.
I'd still have him over Sakho mind.

I thought we had signed Rojo already, Sporting and the 3rd party can argue about the money distribution amongst themselves.
