I was hoping more that Richie Gray and Johnnie Beattie would come home. Gray to replace Kellock and Beattie just so he can learn from Adam Ashe.....
The most like for like replacement for Matawalu I can think of is Joe Simpson at Wasps - underrated scrum half in my book. I still think though that Sean Kennedy would make a good solution.

Yes someone like Gray is wasted there and would leave. That said you have to admire the loyalty of Scottish players like Strokosh who stayed in Perpignan while all the other high profile players left.

Would be great to bring Gray home, although he wouldn't come cheap.
Is DTH's contract not up this year too? Yesterday he obviously showed his worth, but Glasgow are very well stocked with wingers and all of them will be on big salaries - maybe Townsend will see him as a luxury he can no longer afford if he is to get a decent lock/7/9?

Well if he likes Scotland I'd love to have him at Edinburgh!! Slap that 13 jersey on his back!

Rumours that Glasgow are chasing Simone Favaro, now that would be a great signing (not that i like stealing players from other teams, particularly Italians one). An extremely aggressive open side who punch way above his weight but could be missing when on international duties.

Matt Scott - 12.
Strauss would move to Glasgow in exchange.

In exchange for what? Some brocade scatter cushions?
Or maybe a chenille draught excluder, which would be slightly more fit for purpose and a lot more mobile.

Looking at t'Interweb tonight there appear to be strong rumours that Visser is leaving Edinburgh and Maitland is leaving Glasgow. Anyone heard any more?

Lots of rumours about visser - Maitland is a new one.
Visser has spent 6 years at Edinburgh and, although disappointing to see him go, I think a move will do him good. If he joins a decent team that is...
I'm not sure what I'd make of Maitland leaving - on one hand he is SQ by family, but something doesn't sit right for me if he only sees through his first contract in Scotland and leaves straight after....
Saying that, he's been a good, not great player for club and country - maybe a move will re-galvanize him.
Absolutely nothing other than rumour though, and no real credible sources so far.

Maitland leaving Glasgow would be a blow. We knock him for having a worse strike rate than each member of the Edinburgh front row, but he's actually very good at rugby. Lee Jones is ever so slightly less good, and Rory Hughes will struggle to make the required impact from Barlinnie.

If I had to pick two from three of DTH, Seymour and Maitland, then I would certainly go for the first two, both of whom just seem more natural try scorers, which is what you want from a winger.
We certainly have not seen Maitland at his best this year though, plenty of season left though for him to come on to his game.

Maitland is what i call a classy player, very technical and ultra fast but doesn't have the strength and ability to beat defenders like DTH and Seymour but i would still give him a 2 year extension if he scores the game winning try on sunday. Always had the feeling he is a very big game player.

If Glasgow were looking for a similar type of scrum half to Niko they could do a lot worse than Sarel Pretorius at the Cheetahs. Quality player capable of scoring and producing outstanding tries. He is 30 now though so maybe losing a bit of pace. Scores tries year in year out for the Cheetahs in super rugby.
Fumiaka Tanaka could be another. At the Highlanders and goes toe to toe with Aaron Smith. Though considering he plays in an indoor stadium, the West coast weather might not suit his game that much.

On the topic of Maitland, his heart didn't seem to be in it for the game on Saturday. Dropped the pass for a loop that would have created the fourth try and was very slow and casual in cleaning a ball up that was hacked forward. If he does start for Scotland this 6 nations, hopefully Very will have had some stern words.

Stevie Scott being fairly non-committal about the Visser situation:
EDINBURGH assistant coach Stevie Scott was tight-lipped yesterday about the future of record try-scoring winger Tim Visser.
The Dutch-born Scotland international is out of contract with the capital outfit at the end of the season and, although discussions have taken place with the SRU about the prospect of extending his stay in the capital, the governing body face competition from a number of clubs in England, France and the southern hemisphere.
“Tim, along with many other players, is coming to the end of his contract. I don’t want to comment on that at the moment. There are two sides to it. Tim has to make a decision as well. The process is on-going but there has been no decision yet,” said Scott.

Sounds like they've made him an offer, but aren't very hopeful that he'll accept it.RDW_Scotland wrote:Stevie Scott being fairly non-committal about the Visser situation:EDINBURGH assistant coach Stevie Scott was tight-lipped yesterday about the future of record try-scoring winger Tim Visser.

The Scotsman reported that he's had offers from AP, French and even Southern Hemisphere teams. I'm not sure how accurate the last one is, but if he has got an offer from a decent English or French team it would be difficult to turn down.
He will be on a big salary at Edinburgh so him leaving should free up some money. The problem at Edinburgh always has been attracting top quality players, which we need far more than squad fillers just now.

I think if Visser went it would not be a bad thing. Playing for Edinburgh must really have slowed down his development, and playing in a top team where they construct good opportunities could enable him to thrive
He scored so many tries in a poor team - imagine how many he could score in a top team

Yes, you could just imagine him at Saints with St George of North on the other wing. I honestly couldn't blame him for moving on.

Maitland may not be settling here in Scotland and may be looking to move back down under! If he does move back then he will be tarnished (rightly or wrongly) as a bit of a mercenary.

Do these rumours about about Maitland have an actual source?
To my mind, they belong in the same category of my filing cabinet as 'Interesting things to do in York' and 'Useful dinner-party conversation starters'.

Unless there is an 'A' game somewhere there is absolutely no chance he is getting named in an Edinburgh squad as he isn't registered for the challenge cup!
Have to trust the coaching staff for this one, Hugh Blake has all the attributes to be an absolute gem of a player.

Shame to see Jim Thompson has had to retire due to injury at 30. He was a popular squad player to have at Edinburgh and seems to have carried on in the same way at London Scottish. He played with my brother at under 18s colts level for our club and I managed to have a few games with him too (I was a big 16 year old) and he was a classy player.
There was even a spell when he was tapping on the door for a Scotland call up his form was so good. I remember Jack Cuthbert got capped before him and a lot of people saying that Thompson should have been chosen instead.
Favourite on field memory was the first game after Bill McLaren (his Grandfather) died - Stade Francais at Murrayfield in the HK (our backrow was Alan MacDonald, Ross Rennie and Roddy Grant - how times have changed eh!). JT had an inspired game, almost running the length of the field near the start of the game, much to the crowd's delight.
Also, his last act for Edinburgh was scoring a try in the Heineken Cup Semi final!

It's on the Glasgow Warriors forum. Posted by someone who as per usual can't give away sources but he has heard that Maitland is off...blah, blah, blah.
Of course that doesn't mean that it's not true and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if he does go.
With Hogg, Seymour, Maitland and DTH all up for renewal, at least one was more than likely going to move on. If Maitland can find a club in the NH where is going to get regular game time, it frees up a significant salary to recruit elsewhere.
I said at the time and I still believe it the squad Glasgow had last season was the best it will have for a very long time in terms of depth. Assuming that we suddenly don't come into funny money and/or, Scotland dosen't start to produced loads of top class players.

It's amazing how many of these rumours end up being true eh?
London Irish is a strange one - they are obviously investing in the squad (Ben Franks signing too) but so is every other club in the league, and I can't see them being a top 6 team any time soon.

To my mind, they belong in the same category of my filing cabinet as 'Interesting things to do in York' and 'Useful dinner-party conversation starters'.

I hear Jorvik has a fantastic visitor centre.
Alternatively, does anyone else think that the return of Page 3 is indicative of mainstream society's broader inability to engage with the more complex arguments of radical feminism?

Just watch out for angry looking men with Crossbows!
Tell you what, I hope for Glasgow's sake DTH is signing a new contract, if not you will be stuck with a geriatric Sean Lamont and, well, Lee Jones!

Maitland to LI is bizarre. You'd think he would have managed to land a better club, and with Brian Smith recently leaving I wonder who has been driving this from an LI perspective.
Still, Glasgow need to hang on to DTH and Seymour now, probably hold on to Lamont for another season and assuming he isn't in orange overalls next season, promote Rory Hughes to more regular first team action (I think he could become really useful). Then there's Lee Jones as well to ignore....
Maitland is probably someone you could afford to lose, and he'll have been asking for some wedge as well no doubt. Have I also mentioned that his strike rate is dreadful.........
Replacing Matawalu is more important.

RDW, I was not aware that the Vikings used crossbows. Or is this a general warning that FES's domestic staff are taking a more strident approach to salary negotiations?
Has Tommy Seymour left Scotstoun as well? By my reckoning we still have ; Seymour, Selkirk Pixie (who has played well whenever called upon), Schlong who is learning new tricks every week it seems- offloading!!!- and young Mr Hughes. Obviously losing DTH would be a blow but I have a feeling that Toonie has someone lined up to come in for NoMaits.
Speaking of which... he made a huge impact when he first arrived, he brought a streetwise attitude to the backs and a mental toughness which has contributed greatly to Glasgow's recent success. I wish him all the best at the NotNots.

Ah you have obviously never been to York - tour guides love to tell Scottish people that it is still legal to kill a Scotsman within the City walls, as long as you use a crossbow!
Obviously Seymour is still there, but he can't play every game. If DTH leaves then Glasgow will have significantly reduced their firepower.

With Maitland now confirmed as leaving perhaps a suitable replacement would be Robbie Robinson?

Real shame - I'd have thought being a Lion he could move to France or a team higher up in the Aviva. Having said that his try-scoring rate hasn't been too good at all. Pity as I could have seen him at FB and Hogg at centre.
But I suppose he'll be on one of the top salaries. If that can help secure the likes of Nakarawa and DTH or secure a decent SH then it might be worth it.

Glasgow are going to have to sign some players soon, Niko and Maitland are two of the big stars that attract fans etc so any replacements will hopefully be fairly high profile. Obviously SQ players should always be the priority if possible, hopefully Lineen and Scott Johnson are busy as we speak.

No conflict there at all: he's a superb finisher who would score lots of tries. However, bearing in mind that Alex Dunbar says that the biggest collision he ever suffered as a rugby player was in a training session at Glasgow, " Stepped into Mike Cusack and next thing I was doing cartwheels across the pitch", then the delicate one might need a season in the A team to toughen him up a bit.
