I notice Wicus Blaauw has left Edinburgh, not much chance of game time for him with Dickinson and the emergence of Sutherland and, hopefully,a fit Alan Dell and Grant Sheills getting a chance at some point also.

Blaauw made zero impact. Another NSQ played hauled in way below the quality threshold. Certainly no better than Kyle Traynor and Rory Sutherland is miles better.
Dickinson, Sutherland, Dell and Shiells. No problem at all with those options.

Aye Blauuw did next to nothing during his time with us. No great loss seeing him go and as FES has called out we have much better options at the club.
On Hoyland, I really hope he can get some game time this season or beginning of next, as it would be nice to have a Scottish winger kick on. I think it has also shown at international level we’re still struggling in some areas, and with Maits and Seymour injured we only really have Fife and Visser, and considering how few trys Edinburgh score (this season), it’s hardly encouraging. Plus while I’m thinking about it, Maitland is not exactly a prolific try scorer either.

Is James Fleming back from injury yet? Another blaster who really should be in an Edinburgh shirt.
I guess that he's fully committed to 7s and according to the Exfoliator website, he's 28 now. Yikes.
Jamie Farndale probably a better bet, in that case.

If Visser does leave, and we sign that massive Fijian bloke, Hoyland will still hopefully be involved - Will Helu can play 13 apparently, and I think would be exactly the kind of 13 we need just now - big, strong and fast. Means Matt Scott (12) can move back to 12 too! Looking at next season,
9 Hidalgo-Clyne, Hart, Kennedy
10 Tonks, Heathcoat, Te Rure
11 Massive Fijian, Hoyland, Farndale
12 Scott, Burleigh, Strauss
13 Helu, Scott, Dean, Fife
14 Fife, Hoyland, Brown
15 Cuthbert, Tonks, Brown
5 out of 7 of the starting backline SQ, with Hoyland, Farndale and Dean hopefully starting to get more gametime. That would be a pretty handy backline with the massive Fijian and Helu trucking up and Tonks, Scott and Fife making the most of the space.

Do we think that Solomons is paid according to the aggregate tonnage of his squad?

That backline is almost bigger than our pack!
Gone are the days of Blair, Godman, Webster, De Luca, Cairns, and Mossy!
I wonder how De Luca is getting on in France - we've literally heard nothing of him since he left. What a difference it makes having Bennett at 13 over him eh?

Decent backline, and lots of positive attacking players in amongst that group. Is Brett Thompson with us next season or was he only on a one year deal?

Yeh, great signing.....
We need a nickname for the new Fijian if he signs.

I am sure there was a feck up with Thompson, because he was SQ until a month before he joined the club, when he played in the test match against (yes, you guessed) Scotland in the summer.
Not necessarily easy to find a good surname for Mr Taqele Naiyaravoro. Er. Big Tacky?
Edit: nice piece on the big feller here:

Noticed also that they've increased Scotstoun's seated capacity until the end of the season to 7,200. That's really superb if they get to fill that east stand most games. They presumably wouldn't have put down the bawbees unless there was a need, so well done to the club.

That is encouraging and a smart move. That's a pretty decent crowd given the starting point five or so years ago.
Presumably you just borrowed the chairs from Murrayfield?

Actually, I didn't draw it. It's an extension of gestalt therapy and took me years to perfect the technique: being anally expulsive does have its upsides.Look on the bright side FES now you'll have a conversation starter for all your dinner parties.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VI - Banter Boogaloo
More player movement announced from Glasgow.
Connor Braid returns from London Scottish on loan, this one was expected and he may even have to start this weekend, unless Peter Horne gets released back to Glasgow, which will depend on the injury status of some of the others.
James Downey sent out on loan to Wasps. Most definitely not expected. I know he has not really made much of an impact since arriving in Glasgow, but surely this time of year was what he was signed for. With injuries and international call ups I am really struggling to see who is going to play in the backline for us in the next few weeks.
You can only assume that Toonie has a plan and that he has decided that Downey just does not fit into the Glasgow style of play, or that he is now over the hill. Maybe it was an optimistic signing at 33. Wasps like to chuck it about as well, so hard to see how an old crash ball merchant like him is going to fit in there as well.
Maybe we are going to see a few surprises in the Glasgow line up, a few of the kids may have been judged ready to step up and a game against Zebre might be the game to try them out. Going to be an interesting selection.

Completely forgot that Edinburgh and Glasgow had games this weekend!
Edinburgh have the Ospreys at home, being played at Myreside.
It is a bit of a surprise that Glasgow have got rid of Downey, especially with Dunbar, Bennett, Horne and Lamont called up.

They may or may not get Lamont and/or Horne back. They may well be in trouble if they get neither of them.

We are actually in quite good shape:
1.Sutherland 2.Hilterbrand 3.Nel 4.Bresler 5.Toolis 6.Leonardi 7.Grant 8.Coman (c) 9.Hart 10.Heathcote 11.Brown 12.Burleigh 13.Beard 14.Hoyland 15.Cuthbert
16.Shiells 17.Cochrane 18.Andress 19.McKenzie 20.Bradbury 21.Kennedy 22.Te Rure 23.Strauss
That's what I reckon we'll see. I've assume we'll get Toolis back, and also possible that Tonks could be released.

Bradbury is playing in the U20's so I doubt you will see him either. Surely if Edinburgh are ever going to give McInally a run at hooker it has to be now as well. If it does not happen now then they might as well forget it, which would make the whole exercise pointless to say the least.

Then we should get Hoyland out of the 7s and playing proper 15-a-side rugby.
If we can't use Bradbury (and Ritchie would be out as well) then I suspect we'll see McInally on the bench covering the back row.

Probably not too much room for youngsters getting an opportunity unfortunately; Murchie, Jones, Vernon, Braid, Hughes, Horne?, Pyrgos could well be Townsend's selection.

Jones was injured last time I heard and Vernon might be needed in the back row as we are going to be a little light there as well. You missed out DTH of course, who could play centre or wing. If Pyrgos comes back, we might even see Nikko playing on the wing. That still leaves very little for the bench and one injury could put us in trouble for the Osprey's game the following week and that aught to be much tougher.

Very hard to know what the Glasgow team is going to look like until Big Vern issues an injury report.
Glasgow players reported in the SRU announcement for the France game as being broken: Adam Ashe (neck), Chris Fusaro (ankle), Tyrone Holmes (face), Sean Lamont (calf), Henry Pyrgos (knee), Tim Swinson (calf), Duncan Weir (arm).
Making a couple of baseless but hopeful assumptions about which of those injuries is likely to be serious, we might be able to do:
15 Murchie
14 Maitland
13 Vernon
12 Horne
11 DTH
10 Braid
09 Matawalu
08 Strauss
07 Bordill
06 Eddie
05 Swinson
04 Nakarawa
03 Cusack
02 Hall/MacArthur
01 Grant

If Maitland is fit enough for Glasgow he may be considered fit enough for Scotland, especially if Seymour is out and both Fife and Visser are possibly/probably lesser options for Cotter?

Does anyone know much about Mitch Eadie the Bristol no8? Obviously a Scotland U20 player a couple of years ago and seems to be Bristol's starting 8 and scoring a fair number of tries. If Bristol were to get promoted to the Premiership and he kept his place, is he good enough to be a realistic Scotland option?

If I recall he was a bit on the small side (similar to McInally), but given the very low bar set by Beattie against France he could be worth a look. Probably makes sense to let him continue with Bristol and hope they get promoted so that we can see him play in the top flight.

Don't know too much about most of these players as not really seen any of them play or played against any of them. In the backs George Horne (Peter Hornes brother) has switched from 10 to scrum half this season. Apparently he has switched pretty easily and has been playing well for Hawks, good goalkicker as well. Rory Hutchison has had a decent amount of game time for the Saints A squad this season, saw a couple of highlights on the saints website from their A games and looks a decent all round player, looked like he had a good boot on him and strong in defence.
I know Archie Russell at 13 is Finn Russells brother but never seen him play, I did see an interview recently where they said he was the more promising brother out of the 2!
Patrick Kelly is a former Merchiston player who is playing in France, the team he is at is in division 3 but having a quick look at their website he seems to get a lot of starts for them. The other backs I don't really know much about apart from Ben Robbins who is at Edinburgh is supposed to be rapid.
I am surprised Reuben Norville isn't there on the wing as he has sounded pretty promising with Leicester.
The forwards apart from Fergusson, Bradbury and Ritchie I dont know too much about them, I know Scott Cummins is being talked up pretty highly at Glasgow as a star for the future. Ally Miller has been talked up pretty highly as well, came from Musselburgh and is now at watsonians and Edinburgh but still seems a bit on the skinny side for his height.

Google reveals some interesting stuff:
1. He is EQ as well as SQ and hasn't made up his mind which one is for him:

2. He can also play centre:

3. He needs to keep eating:

Well they were right when they said J Gray was more promising than his brother but wrong with Alex Blair, who was supposed to be the best Blair. I always take these things with a pinch of salt, but if Archie has the composure and attitude of his brother then he'll go far. Perhaps unlucky for him that future Lions captain Mark "the Messiah" Bennett is ahead of him in the 13 pecking order.
Your description of Ben Robbins renders him unsuitable for the Solomons game plan, so he probably should just prepare for the 7s now....

We've definitely discussed Ben Robbins here before - he's a got sprinting pedigree:
That is some achievement!
Accomplished athlete Ben Stuart Robbins hung up his sprinting spikes to join Edinburgh Rugby as an EDP in the summer of 2014.
A three-time winner of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Cup (2011, 2012 and 2013) with George Watsons College, Robbins picked up the man of the match award in the 2011 final.
He has played age-grade rugby for his region (Edinburgh) and Scotland at both U16 and U18 level, scoring three tries in the 2014 FIRA European Championship against Portugal and Italy (2).
His searing pace earning him U17 British Championship success at 400m and saw him race to New Year Sprint glory in 2013, while we has also spent time as a professional youth footballer before turning his full-time attention to rugby.
That is some achievement!

Well hopefully we can get him working on his all round game perhaps as a fullback. We could really use a pacy option to counter attack from the back, given our kicking game. Cuthbert isn't bad running the ball back, but you'd hardly describe him as devastating.

He's relatively small though - 6ft and 13st - so even allowing for him putting on another stone or so as he develops into a professional rugby player, the sad fact is he's probably going to have to be very quick and skillfull to make it is a pro.
He'll probably do the standard route of joining the 7s squad for a couple of years then filter him in to the pro team - he might struggle if we have a 19st Fijian winger in his place!

I don't know, 6ft and 14st (assuming he puts on a stone without losing too much pace) is probably ok.
That's bigger than Leigh Halfpenny and the exact same size as Mike Brown.
