No idea why that posted twice.
You do realise that as we're in Britain the sports news/papers etc are going to want to know our managers views as well.

how are we even average? - there are 200 footballing nations
average international tournament side = Yes.
top level domestic tournament(most watched sporting league in the world let alone football league)
top level fanbase
average footballing nation = no
minor = not in a million years.

Oakey, I was referring DIRECTLY to Hodgson and England as a mediocre/average/minor international footballing nation as I'm sure you know.
I wonder how the world is reporting the opinion of the Swedish, Russian, Croatian and Czech managers on their Ballon D'Or opinion. Not at all I'd wager, so not sure why anyone gives a tinkers cuss in regards to Hodgson's

People do seem to care a bit to much about the British(english) media tbh.
I am sure it is click bait for many countries around the world- specifically USA and other territories over europe..

In my opinion England are just an international version of Liverpool. As in, they were truly great once, however now they sit just outside the top bracket and the fans tend to have unrealistic expectations of them!(however the expectations of both sets of fans has been greatly reduced over the last decade).

Liverpool in their day were far better than England ever were. However, where the expectations of England fans have diminished and they accept they aren't a top team, rather a lot of Liverpool fans continue to live in the past and still think they are special.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
we support, we hope, we dont expect.
supporting a club/team is forgotten when discussing these topics. Talking about what you want to happen doesn't mean we as fans expect it to happen! Other nations- typically our little cousins jump on us for discussing our team.. Its not really fair. No one has a pop at me(a palace fan) wanting to stay up for the next 40 plus years and become a decent side again)even though we were only a decent team for a couple of years in recent history..
In fact over supporting a lesser team is seen as a positive over a negative in the domestic game. Palace are more like Scotland or Ireland when it comes to a direct comparison.
No one likes England/Liverpool fans!! but they forget that its a natural thing to support ones team.

Really, in what way are you anything BUT a minor country?
You don't have any top players and NONE that ever perform internationally, you don't contend at tournaments, what could be more minor than that?

A minor country in footballing terms to me are, San Marino, Gibralter, Faroe Islands, etc.
Pretty sure England are well above those nations.

I think your missing the point, I don't mind coverage if it's merited, but imagine in Spain if Tommy Robredo was given the coverage England get. People would rightly ask why they are wasting so much time writing about that chump.
England have probably one solitary thing that they can find encouraging at the moment. Harry Kane. Other than that, there's nothing to write about, and Hodgson's opinion on the Ballon D'Or is as close to a non-story as you could get, so if that's all there is, just leave it out. Fair enough?

That is an awful comparison, the English media are going to give the national team in the national sport a lot of coverage irrespective of how good they are and they're far better than a minor team.
So how is Tommy Robredo who's what the fifth or sixth highest ranked Spanish player a relevant comparison?

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
Hodgson has been all over 5 live bulletins today and Talksport too. For such a non story, I'm amazed they bother to report such banality and irrelevance.
As for Robredo, he's about the tennis equivalent of England's football team. Similar ranking, similar tournament record, not especially talented, nor tactically astute, no real weapons or world class shots, unlikely to challenge the big guys, but might very occasionally pull off a solitary decent result.
Seems like a pretty good comparison.

Not really a comparison at all SR and if you can't see why the English media report on the English team then i'm afraid there's no saving you and you should probably go and sit in a darkened room somewhere. Maybe with a big D on your hat

Except of course, as HH correctly points out, football is the national sport of England and there is only one national team, hence high media coverage.
Contrast that with Robredo in Spain, where tennis is not the national sport, and where Robredo is not the sole Spanish player, or the best, hence less media coverage.
An idiotic comparison.

football is our national sport- as it is the Spanish national sport.
we talk about football more- whether we have a Tommy roberdo or a tim henman.
the Spanish also talk about Rugby Union on occasion. The scots cant stop talking about football either- there is much more news about Scottish football than about Murray. The welsh national sport is Rugby union. they talk about that a lot more than there best sportsman(possibly Gareth bale)
I have no idea what you are talking about SR. It seems you have a problem because you read to much English press. You dont have to read it.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
Obviously Oakey, I'm talking about disproportionate coverage of non existant stories. If there is nothing to report, don't report it, and certainly don't try and shoe-horn in a tenuous link to include England in there as the papers have done here with Hodgson, it's the print equivalent of that scumbag Terry appearing after the Champions trying to get a bit of reflected glory. Lazy journalism.
I was trying to compare the ability of England's national football team with Robredo, they are a good analogue of one another in terms of achievement and standing in their respective games. He isn't talked about because he doesn't achieve much, so why talk about England? Quite simple really.

its economies of scale- its click bait on the whole.. if people will click it/read it/buy the paper because they are horrified or interested- its done its job.
I normally only ever find out about sports news from this forum if i am going to be honest. I just dont pay attention to much of the press. But it is market forced.
but yes we do speak about England football- why?
Just like I speak about Palace- quality is immaterial- Its because we support the team. why does the croydon or bromley advertiser talk about what Pardew had for dinner?- they do it because some people will read it!!

Well you for a start as you were obviously unable to ignore it, change the channel etc. Then there's all the people that click/read/listen to said articles. If nobody read them then they wouldn't be written about or do you not understand the concept?

Having a preposterous story that people click on is no measure of its newsworthyness or "importance".
Whether I click on something or not is not how we gauge if something is "important"
I would wager that Hodgson's opinions on the matter of Ballon D'Or are "important" to no one.

No you don't, you just like to find an excuse to complain about the English football team, any straw you can grasp is good enough.
As I said if nobody wanted to know then it wouldn't be reported. You don't seem to have a grasp on how reporting works at all.
Quick tip, if somethings being reported it means that someone somewhere wants to hear about it (e.g the kardashian plumbs, Hodgsons opinion on football matters) because the great SR doesn't care, does not mean the general public don't want to know.

Another spectacular non answer. The "if you don't like it, bugger off" isn't a solution to lazy. inept journalism.
Is it too much to ask news agencies to report what is newsworthy (or more importantly, omit what isn't), not just add what is tenuously linked to include something/someone who views are irrelevant and unwarranted just to give it a parochial angle?
Must have been a slow sports news day.

Do the general public want to know though? I'm sure once it came up, interest was piqued, but I can't think that many people were thinking "I wonder who Hodgson voted for" while watching... But then again I'm not English. In any case, has it become a big deal worthy of a page worth of comments? I thought it a humorous/interesting footnote, worth mentioning, but hardly worth psychoanalysis.
