Not a great performance by any means. However, we are through so a positive there. Poor mistake from mignolet and IMO a poor decision to give a penalty. Our relative struggles at anfield continue it seems.

It was offside but why does it take a wolfsburg player telling the officials to make them change the decision?

Can't believe the official didn't flag in the first place, one of the more obvious offside calls you'll ever get

top 3 in the league (not having to qualify in august) & winning the fa cup, must be the absolute minimum for LVG, to say that is progress

In the end CSKA were closer to putting United through than United.
This was not a hard group at all, United have to take a long look at LVGs performance

With regard to LVG, with a proven track record, he has already made it clear that he is not going to stay much longer than three years and the next manager will be Ryan Giggs. So the main issue for LVG is to get Man Utd's squad up to scratch so that it is again a regular top four team that can challenge for the title and to bring on Giggs so that he is ready to manage at the very highest of levels.
Alex Ferguson despite the dominance of his reign only managed to win the Championship League twice and both times in unconvincing circumstances: one an injury time turn around from a 1-0 losing position, another 6-5 on penalties.

Only a trophy this season will now be good enough. You can't spend the money he has, cut the squad down and complain about injuries. Sad thing was this is was one of the few enjoyable games to watch. United didn't go out because of tonight though. It was inept team selections and style of play earlier in the group.

Re: UEFA Champions and Europa League 2015/16 Thread
it could be argued that Untd's defensiveness started after their 6-1 home defeat against Manchester City a few years back. Fergie was furious they had chased the game the game with only 10 men, had conceded three late goals and then lost the title on goal difference to their near neighbours.
The last Fergie teams were somewhat shot shy and were sustained by the excellent goalscoring of RVP.
Moyes and LVG simply inherited an average team - one that had lost its swagger.

Re: UEFA Champions and Europa League 2015/16 Thread
United's fixtures after the Europa league games, the further they go, are pretty shocking, with away matches at City, plus games three days after against Arsenal & Tottenham.
LVG claiming 'United are getting better'. Total delusion. Everton beat Wolfsbury twice last season too. He also slammed Schweinsteiger for not being the same Schweinsteiger he knew before. Yes, well Louis, there's a reason a genuine top manager got rid of him in the first place out of Munich, because his legs were gone, what were you thinking or expecting. £14m.....mugs!
They just did a comparison with Moyes, at least David Moyes got United to the semi final of the League cup & the quarter final of the champions league. LVG's fall back is always the league position, not sure how much longer that excuse will be enough to keep him going.

LVG has spent a quarter of a billion pounds - inheriting a bad squad (wasn't even that bad) really isn't any excuse.

No, the league (at the top) has got worse, making it appear United have improved, when they haven't.

The squad was awful when Fergie left but the chances are he'd have won the league with it again; a lot of the players were too ingrained with his way of thinking so an overhaul was always going to be needed. I do hold him up on a pedestal but he was simply irreplaceable, you can replace a mercenary manager with another mercenary but you can't replace the embodiment of the team and it's culture with anyone.
LVG is doing a poor job considering the outlay but until the lingering shadow of Fergie disappears I don't see us progressing, I initially thought Giggs hanging about was a good idea but he's just another reminder of the better days and is at odds with the new philosophy.

Re: UEFA Champions and Europa League 2015/16 Thread
Giroud with his first hat trick and the evil empire out of the Champions league. What a great day for football. LVG has ruined both his reputation and doomed United to mediocrity in the short term at least. I have never seen team spend so much on players the last couple of years while being so poor. I mean failing is one thing but spending huge bags of money to fail is another thing.
As for the gunners they really made it hard for themselves but without Santi and Alexis this is a great performance. Also good to see og and theo playing together I think this could be a setup we use more in the future. Ransey has a goal and an assist in his last two matches moving into his natural position. The much maligned Ozil is head and shoulders the best playmaker in Europe this season. Where is john to celebrate his favorite players hat trick?

Re: UEFA Champions and Europa League 2015/16 Thread
good effort from Arsenal tonight, made it hard for themselves with the shocker at home to Olympiakos, and to a lesser degree the defeat in Zagreb (the performance in Munich was poor, but the result expected). Guess they would like Zenit or Wolfsburg in the next round, Atletico at a pinch. Obviously Barca and Real the teams they'd like to avoid.
Chelsea were better tonight, not vintage Chelsea but signs they are moving in the right direction. Finishing still a big issue really, lack of goals from open play a concern and should really have scored four or five tonight. Still, hopefully they'll get there in time to rescue something from their season, and at least the desire was there and they looked at times to be genuinely enjoying their football. Juventus and PSG the teams to avoid in the last 16.
