So basically it's £20 for a pint of Tennents & a chat with Hamish Watson about what a shirt stealing Poopie John Hardie is...
Re: Scotland RWC Warm-up Matches
Am I the only one who isn't completely comfortable with the symbolism of a 'tartan takeover' of part of a foreign country?
Maybe it's just my easily-outraged, anti-interventionist, New-Statesman reading, Corbynite liberal sensibilities, but massed marches tend to frighten the bejesus out of me. Seems a tad... nationalist.

Bit late to worry Bru, the wheels are in motion.
Initial scouting missions will take place between September 23rd to 27th in the West Country & Yorkshire regions.
Then come October 3rd to 10th we shall descend en mass, by the full time whilst after Samoa the North of England will follow it's destiny and become part of Scotland.
By the week of the quarters we should have taken London.
Alba Gu Brath!!!

Is anyone else watching The Breakfast Club on Film4? The horrific teacher's name is Richard Vernon.
It's written in a sign on his desk, and I just let out an involuntary "Nooooooooo!".

I can see it now...
World Cup final. Scotland vs the All Blacks. 77 mins on the clock. Scotland trailing by 6 points. Lineout on half way. Scotlands throw. Richie Vernon lined up in the 13 channel opposite Snakehips Smith. He gazes across the blood-soaked twickenham turf at his opponent and says:
"Dont mess with the bull, you might just get the horns"
He proceeds to run a wrap around with the team captain Hugh Blake. John Hardie (playing at full-back) runs a dummy line to hold Ma'a Nonu.Blake slices through the gaping hole in the midfield and draws Ben Smith. He feeds the Vernon. The heavens open as Richie Vernon Ash-Splashes underneath the posts to bring scotland to within 1 point. There is no time for a restart. He pushes the teams hooker Finn Russell into the dirt for asking to take the conversion before casually reverse-heel-flick-drop-kicking the ball between the sticks. The crowd is in stunned silence as Richard Vernon ascends to a higher plane of existence.

So, what have we learned this week?
USA beat Japan... We have nothing to fear from either of them.
Samoa draw with Fiji... That should put Samoa's recent form into perspective, we can beat them.
Springboks... played 2 lost 2. Looking very Scottish (east coast branch).
Bring them on I say.

Like that attitude. And its true, they really were in commanding positions in the last 2 games & blew it. Based on that, I expect we'll both conspire to draw that match!

Is that apart from the first ruck when three of them did Superman impressions flying of their feet over the top. Decent ref we'll be fine.

On the old playstation 2 rugby games there used to be a glitch that occurred when something unfathomable happened and the system didn't know how to react and suddenly when the players touched the ball down for a try it didn't count, the touchlines became irrelevant and players ran over them with ease and the clock kept going way over 80 minutes and into eternity and rucks didn't happen anymore just tackles and the ball would spill and kicks just rebounded off the stadium back into play. The forwards lost any semblance of control and just walked around dazed much like the Calcutta cup game in 2014. This is what I imagine will happen around the 75th minute in the Scotland South Africa game, the teams will simply refuse to win and therefore the game will become a free for all where nobody scores and the game didn't end.
Actually that raises an interesting point, say in the group stages two teams are drawing in the last minute and need a win to go through and therefore just refuse to let the game end and it goes on for days and days is there a protocol for ending the game or will the whole tournament be postponed until the game finishes?

Sean Lamont needs to be one of those cut - Ritchie Vernon should get to be in the squad for versatility and we need loads of cover at centre given the injuries. Surely 3 hookers needed?

Agreed on Lamont. In my opinion Vernon wont get near a starting place at forward so hes either hes a center or hes not in .

Re: Scotland RWC Warm-up Matches
Three hookers and three scrum halves are a given. Though I'd take Cooseater over Frodo the Glacial every time.
Are five props enough? Four will play in every match, and that's a lot of rugby if we make the knock out stages. If we take six that means we still have ten players to spread across second and back rows.
Gray, Gray, Someone and Harley. Harley gets it for his ability to cover 6. I'd like to see Gilchrist but have a feeling that Sprinter Hamilton might sneak it.
This leaves six back row positions; Bluto, Ashe, Wilson, all can play 6 or 8, Barclay must be first choice 7. I think it's Hardie and Watson. Which should be 18 players.
The backs, well that's another story.

That list still needs 2 culled. 1 flanker and 1 other. Squad sizes seem too small for rugby these days. Should be more like 35 than 31..,

Just watched the SA game from the weekend - their midfield was incredibly impressive, and their 12 was massively physical and gave New Zealand a lot of problems. What a player that 13 could be too.
So basically I'm fearing the worst if we don't have Dunbar or (a fit) Matt Scott available.
The thought of a Horne Vernon midfield lining up against those two is frightening!

See Tattie, now you're "getting with the programme" as the hip young professionals say.
The Pro 12 winning partnership is the best available to us, until the other three come back from their bus trip to Lourdes, so we'd best start believing in them.

I was looking at the squad again earlier. Does everyone think three hookers, three scrum halves and two fly halves are a given? Or do we think the versatility of players like Horne and Laidlaw and the fact that replacements aren't too far away gives us more flexibility?

I asked a similar question a while ago and there was quite a lot of discussion on it - from memory the general consensus was:
We need 3 hookers given the number of games in a short time frame
2 specialist 10s would be fine with Horne or Tonks also in the squad
I personally don't think we need 3 nines

Re: Scotland RWC Warm-up Matches
Guys if I remember rightly, Stuart Lancaster justified leaving Hartley out because if you only have 2 hookers and one gets injured then you could go into a match without any back up. So you need 3. Same with 9.
If the injured centres all recover then possibly Horne as fourth centre/third 10. If Maitland is fit he can cover 15. So, Seymour, McMisser, Schlong make up the numbers.

He should be in as a centre but can cover back row in an emergency - like if too many back rows get injured in a game or a back row gets a card - might allow a bit more flexibility on the subs bench with the forwardss /' backs split. I'd only want to see him in the back row in a crisis but stranger things have happened

If he's in you then need to remove 2 players from the list above . Who though ?
I suppose this will become any easy choice after we get lots of injuries in the 4 warm up games !!!. The last game (france away) is after the squad has to be announced on the 31st of August which is somewhat bizarre timing

Re: Scotland RWC Warm-up Matches
I wondered specially whether we might see Finn as the only out and out 10 with Horne and Laidlaw as backup? I certainly rate Horne higher than Weir and Jackson, but does Cotter?
I'm fairly convinced on the need for 3 scrum halves, but I'm not convinced we need 3 hookers.

Re: Scotland RWC Warm-up Matches
I think if Cotter goes with an 18/13 split the backs will look like this;
9 X 3 S H C, Henners & Cooseater (hopefully)
10 X 2 Dancer and Jackson
Centres X 4 Dunbar, Scott12, and Horne to cover 12 and 10.NB this can be made meaningless if any two of the first three are unfit
Back three X 4 Hogg, Maitland (covers 15), Seymour and Schlong (covers 13 if we run out of centres and would you rather have McMisser Of The Tackle in against Samoa or the Boks?)
By my arithmetic that's 13 players; we may see different personnel such as Frodo for Cooseater or Tonks for Horne but I think that's how it'll be made up.
I go along with Alive555 in that 35 would be a more sensible number, but what do I know?

The IanBru guide to Newcastle
Good evening friends, I've prepared this little guide to some of the finer establishments in the great city of Newcastle. Despite turning into a bit of a magnum opus, it is by no means comprehensive - it's just the things I've enjoyed in the four months I've lived here. Except for the stuff below, if you tell me where your hotels and hostels are I can get some recommendations from people at work who are a bit more immersed in the Toon. Also, any other questions about the place, whether it's about transport, shopping or where to avoid, just ask.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
City Centre – Newcastle feels a lot like Glasgow, with very similar architecture and people. It has a ‘small city’ feel to it, and the area around Grey Street and the Monument is stunning. I’d recommend the Tyneside Cinema, probably the best old-fashioned picturehouse I know of – it serves beer and soft food which will delight any Kermode fans among us).
Bars
The Botanist – Probably one of the best cocktail bars I’ve been to. Pretty pricey, but if you’re entertaining the fairer sex it’s quite a place. Good live music, particularly jazz (although I did see a band absolutely murder ‘Call Me Al’ – I was ready to kill), great food, this place has some of the best drink presentation you’ll see, and the top floor interior is stunning. Very busy at weekends, so you’ll have to book a table, but it’s worth it. I also saw the bouncer turn away a really gobby ‘Geordie Shore’ star saying “Aye, I know your name’s on the list, and I know who you are, but the list doesn’t mention that you’re a ***t.” Top marks for me.
Recommended for: RDW and RuggerRadge – basically those young f***ers who have girlfriends/fiancés and have something to celebrate.
The Bridge Tavern – Located right underneath the steel supports for the Tyne Bridge, the Bridge is part of the re-birth of micro-breweries in the North East. It’s a great city pub that caters for the young professionals on a Friday night, and has a fantastic beer selection. Anywhere that serves Hoegaarden on draft is special, but you should try the local ales as well – though don’t be fooled by their names, they tend to be fairly dark and heavy, but a taste you really should acquire. Recommended also for the quality restaurants on the street. (Top tip: approach from the east. No seriously, the pub to the west (Akenside Traders) is famous for sitting beneath both a bridge and a five-storey Victorian office, and is home to hundreds of seagulls. It’s a sight to see, so avoid unless you want your home strip to very quickly resemble an away strip.)
Recommended for: Jimbo, Schitz and ASBO (in memoriam et absentium), just so Jim has another story to tell people that doesn’t involve pubs in Exeter and burning dogs…
Pleased To Meet You – A really good bar that specializes in gin – the music selection is a tad random so the hipsters bloody love it, but it has a good atmosphere and serves some great craft beers.
Recommended for: Glove – when he arrives it’ll be like the coming of Jesus
As You Like It – I took a girl here last week, and it was really pleasant (the bar, not the girl. She gave me a headache). I’ve included this as it’s large (with three floors and a roof terrace) and is within walking distance of St James’ Park, but is a little bit out of the way. If everywhere else is rammed you’ll still have a good chance of finding space here without resorting to a Wetherspoons. It’s actually on the boundary between Jesmond and the city centre.
Recommended for: George Carlin – just so he can go around to every young couple clearly on their first date and show them pictures of the bliss of parenthood. The bar will close in a week.
Restaurants
Dabbawal – The best curry restaurant I’ve been to so far, it’s a bit more ‘authentic’ than your average tikka masala joint, and the service is great.
Recommended for: EWT Spoons
Café 21 – A quality restaurant serving really good British food. This place has a great wine list and a killer chocolate mouse.
Recommended for: CakeOrDeath
Piccolino – A very upmarket Italian restaurant, like Carluccio’s, only better and less affordable. Inevitably there will be someone whose anniversary falls on the weekend of a Scotland match, so make it up to her (or him – I’m open-minded (or them, for that matter)) by booking a table here. Great Tiramisu.
Recommended for: FES
Longhorns – a Texan smokehouse that serves anything that once walked on four legs and now no-longer does. This is the protein capital of the free world, and the food is great. I didn’t like cole slaw before, and now I do. However, I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns because my office building shares a rear courtyard with this place, so on any hot day have to choose between baking in my office or relenting by opening the fire-escape and breathing the delightful and tempting aroma of slow-roasted cow and pig all day.

Jesmond – home to IanBru and the Scotland training base at RGS Newcastle, this area is either painfully middle-class or unbearably studenty. Still, there are trees, parks and some lovely Victorian houses. There’s also a Waitrose. That’s not the only reason why I choose to live here (being within walking distance of the city centre has its advantages), but I like to think that eating organic free-range prosciutto crudo from a sustainable source makes me a better person. I’d recommend a good walk around the Town Moor, as it’s full of cows and the hills at one end give a brilliant view of the city, all the way to the sea.
Restaurants:
Avanti – probably my favourite restaurant in Newcastle, this is a real ‘mom and pop’ Italian restaurant that serves the classics very, very well. You’ll want to book ahead as it isn’t huge. Go for the lasagne, stay for the affogato, then pass out from too much awesome food. The only downside, and I’m nit-picking here, is the four-track ‘Swing When You’re Eating Italian Food’ sample CD that runs Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Holiday and Bing Crosby on a continuous loop (I’m pretty sure Camp X-Ray copied this as a torture technique). Otherwise it’s fantastic.
Recommended for: NickJ
Komal – I haven’t been to this Indian restaurant, but it comes highly recommended and it’s basically always packed – surely a good sign.
Recommended for: BigGee
Cherry Tree – Across the road from me, this place has possibly the prettiest French waitress I’ve ever seen. Book your tables now, lads. Excellent continental food, though the portions are a wee bit skimpy. You’ll see the great and the good of Newcastle here – during graduation season this place is rammed.
Recommended for: VinceWLB
Bars:
Jam Jar – I knew I wouldn’t like this place as soon as I went in. The food is served on a plank, and the drinks come in jars. Christ on a bike. The only thing is, the food really is good, the staff are very friendly, and it all kind of works without being swallowed in its own cookie-ness.
Recommended for: TJ – there’s bound to be a nice waitress who wants to hear why the current European Rugby rules are an abomination, unfairly geared towards the English clubs.
Osborne Road – this area has lots of pubs and bars, filled with either stag and hen parties or lots of students – the drinks are cheap and generally pretty good (this is Jesmond after all, not Byker) and you’ll get caught up on the latest hippety-hop music that the kids are listening to on the wireless. It’s worth bearing in mind that the Scotland matches will coincide with freshers’ week, so get ready for some mixed emotions – disgust at what they’re doing, and envy that it would be rather inappropriate for you to do the same. (I live there at the moment, but I’m moving a couple streets over as soon as I can arrange it)
Recommended for: TigerTattie and Alive555
The Brandling – A pleasant pub with reasonable food, notable mostly for the occasional appearance of a young Scottish trainee solicitor at their open mic nights. On a sunny evening, the roof-top terrace is great,

Take a bow Bru, that's one hell of a post!

Bru bro you are a little smasher. If the Scotland selectors had you on board we wouldn't worry about who took to the field we'd be far too busy laughing.
