It is a bad mistake to close a thread....
First topic message reminder :
....Because people disagree about tennis matter. Be careful not to over moderate this forum. As far as I could read, there was no insults, no sexism, racial abuse and that should be the only concern of the mods.
We all come from 606 for its good and its bad, most of us would still be there if it wasn;t for its closure.

If you liked that, then this was Randy California, live in 1995, two years later he was drowned trying to save his son from a riptide.
His son survived after Randy pushed him to safety, but it was a great loss to the music world.
"Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" should be in everyone's collection. IMHO

Thanks for that link Jubba, some nice pentatonic licks on that.
I like alot of the old rock stuff too including southern rock stuff like Allman Bros. Cracking guitarist was Randy...sad about his demise at the age of 45.
I'm presuming you like Led Zep too Jubba given the influence of Randy on Jimmy?

I suppose the problem with open forums is that education, intelligence and age are not prerequisites. Especially a problem when it's the mods that are the culprits.

I think Brollies and Beer is the order of the day people.
I think for such a dreary Sunday, I think a soundtrack to compliment the mood is needed.
1. A Town Called Malice - The Jam
2. Our House - Madness
3. Sunday Morning Call - Oasis
4. Heaven Knows I Am Miserable Now - The Smiths
5. The Doves - Black And White Town
Anyone wish to add to it?

Lydian, yes , I do like LedZep, Queen and Hendrix of course.
Spirit I stumbled across by accident one day, one of those "Never heard of them but I like the Album cover" decisions in a music store.
That was 12 dreams and then managed to collect all their albums, but the music for me was in and out of my natural tastes, but they grew on me over time as I became accustomed to Randy's compositions and the rest of the bands influence.
Spirit of '76 remains a pivotal album/experience for me, a time when I was just out of my teenage years, living in a bedsit on meagre (they were then) handouts and "experimenting" as it were. Nothing too strong, but '76 ( as well as Camel, Bowie, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath) was THE album that transformed me into the music lover I am now. For some reason, I began to get into the Beatles a lot after then, maybe appreciating their talents even more than just bopping to them.
God , its all coming back to me.....Bo Hannson, Mark Hammil, Hawkwind.....like grubs emerging from the woodwork.
I wonder If anyone else here had that life changing moment in musical taste ?

Re: It is a bad mistake to close a thread....
Sounds like you like a lot of the classic rock bands Jubba and nothing wrong with that I love Floyd!
I like alot of that but do tend to prefer 'newer' rock. I guess guitar techniques are also more 'technical' these days whereas the earlier rock bands tended to focus on pentatonic scales/licks - as with everything (tennis included), things get faster and more technical as understanding builds from the greats that come before.
For example, you wouldnt have heard the older rock guys playing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEubiUaDq0o (this guys technique, and feel too, is outrageous - many say he's the best solo rock guitarist of today)
But then the newer guys dont have the same feel for the old blues styles, guys like Paige, Clapton, Moore, Hendrix of course...even EVH.
Like tennis and music - older or newer isnt better, just different, and we like what we grew up as well as newer stuff too.

Re: It is a bad mistake to close a thread....
Thanks Lydian, I've just burned my guitar in the incinerator after watching/listening to Guthrie Govan do a "little" lick.
I'm completely self taught, which means I'm cr4p, and that guy just proved how cr4p I am.
Seriously though, its only by trying these things can you appreciate just how good some of the guys are.
Even playing the piano has allowed me to enjoy classical music more, but it is extremely frustrating looking at somebody treat a fret board like a blind man reading Braille. No offence to blind people of course.
Got quite good at tennis, but again only at club level, didn't achieve anything, but anyone who has a go at any sport can appreciate more how the pros do it.
Still, in music, its not how good you can play an instrument, its how good you are at putting a song together and the rest of the bands input.
Same in tennis, you could be a brilliant technician, but can you compete and win against the best ?
As far as I remember, most early rock guitar musicians were taught classical music at school and by a tutor, to develop finger control, and it also taught chord progression for composing music. I suppose thats why there was so much rock Opera (Queen) in the 70's, a knock on from that kind of upbringing.
Today, I don't think they have the same history to fall back on or get inspiration from. My gen had blues, folk and American rock to mould their music. Today, like you say, there are other influences and the music mirrors those styles they grew up with.

I must admit I am tempted into buying either a 50's Telecaster or a Mustang 65 Fender.
I am a big lover of guitar music. Jazz guitar is so undervalued. All family like dance and pop rubbish.
The guitar music needs to be back at the top of the music ladder.

Re: It is a bad mistake to close a thread....
Loved the guitar playing to These are the Days by Brian May particularly when we knew the poignancy of the song...the guitar solo in it is so heartfelt and the phrasing is amazing.
Agree Jubba, only when you try to do things for yourself do you realise how good the pros are. Its make me laugh when any of the top pros get slagged off on here...they are all virtuoso's in their field! I played to county standard and yet the level these guys play at is ridiculously higher - plus they can handle pressure, its whats got them to the top,why they rise above all others.
Similarly with guitarists, there are some mind blowing guys out there these days - too many to list but guys like Guthrie Govan (british!), Zakk Wylde, George Lynch, Greg Howe, Steve Vai, and lots of jazz-fusion guys who all make it seem easy.
But they dont only play well but write music too.
In this regard Steve Vai for me is amazing...his phrasing and ability at composition is second to none, e.g.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q7E-c-y9zE
Then you have guys like Zakk Wylde that people look and think he's a meathead because he played for Ozzy before going his own way but listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYMupc564zE
(I can play this type of stuf but not to the same technical standard, I also have a similar guitar to him - a Les Paul Gibson but in Sunburst Cherry not this Bullseye one which is his signature guitar).
He's also really good at Southern Rock stuff...always impressed by guys who can sing and play complex stuff too...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1c5cxx7K4
Love that drum playing 3 year old - what a natural talent! Amazing stuff.
Have you seen this 12 year old guitarist...most 25 year old virtuoso's would give their right arm to play like this. Unbelieveable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhQpTtociVE -look at his fingers move from 30-50 secs!
I've never seen ANY guitarist play like this, never mind a 12 yr old.
I quite like Dragonforce LK, although they sound a little 'clinical' without feeling to my ears sometimes...they are massively influenced by the uber-classically influenced rock-god himself, Yngwie Malmsteen, the guy who ushered in the 'new' approach to metal in the 90s/00s for which many death metal bands like DragonForce follow:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNsrahtsj0k (here in the late 80s with Joe Lynn Turner who was a great singer from Rainbow - remember I Surrender anyone?). I love the tone of his Fend Strat on this.
Anyway...I can bore for England talking guitar (and tennis some may argue) so I better shut up!
night all...
