The Lions WUM Swamp of Madness No Holds Barred Shootout Thread
First topic message reminder :
1) Hartley - Not a chance. Playing like a Muppet, being sub'd each game, because he's not up to it. As it stands, unlikely to go on the tour, never the less be Capt.
2) Alun Wyn - Blown it. Was the first choice (IMO). Set up for him, with Warbs standing down as Welsh Capt, but AWJ loathing of being interviewed and the appalling Welsh team performance has ruined his chance of Lions Capt. The nail in the coffin being his comment this week, that he wanted to kick the penalties but Biggar and Halfpenny didn't want to..... WTF... WHO'S CAPT!!!
3) Laidlaw - Not sure of a starting place as Lions 9, and with injuries, will he be ready for the tour.
which, IMO has pushes Rory Best into the pole position for Lions Capt. With the exception of Brown, he's been the on form hooker this 6 Nations, and as Gats has already stated he would like the Lions capt to also captain his country, Best is now the first choice.
... But Warbs is a good outsider, has he's been there, works well with Gats and has the professional attitude needed. He handles the media well and is starting to show return in his form.
Thoughts...

Gats isn't doing his job if he doesn't attended these game imho. Poor form from the Lions coach.
He could have been watching it on TV. Probably get a better view than sitting in the stands.

It showed a lack of respect to the Players, the RFU and SRU by not attending.

Guys, you can't seriously expect a man like Gatland to watch 2(!!!) Test matches in one weekend?

Agree entirely. It's likely he will watch games more than once anyway so the majority of his viewing will come from TV.
Watching live sport from the stands is lovely. It affords you many things over the armchair experience, but a better view isn't one of them. I always chuckle to myself when people discussing an incident say something like "I know what happened, cos I was there". I just think that demonstrates they didn't have as good a view as me! Especially with today's tech and being able to pause and replay on a whim.

Is that all you've got Munk? - finger pointing is something I expect a child to do in a playground.
Its a FACT that he didn't attend, and I believe as the Lions coach and chief selector he should be there.

I think being in the stand does allow you a view that tv doesn't, yes in some ways much worse! Does allow you to more closely view players and follow them for positioning etc where a camera would follow the ball. I'm a bit surprised that Gatland didn't attend the england Scotland if it's true.

When we lose 3-0 to NZ I will be blaming it all on Gatland's inability to travel up a motorway.
He has already failed as coach imho.

Exactly. The things a coach needs to pick up on like how quickly a player gets back into play, positioning, workrate etc.No 7&1/2 wrote:I think being in the stand does allow you a view that tv doesn't, yes in some ways much worse! It's a FACT.
I just have bigger fish to fry in my life than worrying over whether other people should be insulted by what someone else didn't do. I don't personally think that the Lions coach should be obliged to attend each and every 6 Nations game featuring eligible players. There are, of course, club games taking place during the 6 Nations as well, and if he chooses not to attend Wasps vs Quins then I'm also cool with that. If Gatland wants to record a few games rather than dash about the country, then that's fine with me. He isn't the Queen, after all.

It seems a lot but cases could be made for 15 given our 'finishers' plus Kruis & Robshaw
Gats didn't even bother turning up for Eng v Scotland game, that implies to me he has made his mind up already either way.
Just out of interest, how and why are you so sure he wasn't at the game?

Stats which are more accurately measured via a player's GPS tag which I'm sure would be made available to him.
Are you honestly taking Tighthead seriously over this ?

There's some fair points here. But the camera angle is usually wide enough to pick most of this up anyway. But I agree there's some stuff you can't see like perhaps the positioning of a back 3 until it's actually kicked to them.

Surely the onus is on you prove he wasn't there? Until you actually provide a shred of evidence, it's a case of Schrodinger's Gatland.

No, something like a picture of him down the pub on Saturday when the game was being played. Or, you know, any sort of evidence to believe he wasn't there watching the game but not picked out on camera. Otherwise it's a really strange assertion to make.

Not to mention a completely irrelevant one especially as he has probably seen both teams play several times each this tournament.

This forum's standards are plummeting at a dizzying rate.
All you have bickered about today is Gatland's attendance at the England vs Scotland game
My advice use the foe button for roasters. It makes this place much better.

Everyone enjoys a WUM when it's witty or genuinely entertaining once in a while. When a WUM is just a bizarre lie, it's just boring.

Attending 1 match is enough for most of us.

Hardly a Lions bolter is he since he went on tour in 2005 and would have had much more impact if Sir Clive hadn't picked his 2003 chums

Are you seriously suggesting that Sir Jonny Wilkinson, the man who reinvented rugby as we now know it, the first fly half to ever tackle and scorer of THAT drop goal, was not a far far better inside centre than Chavin "me me me" Henson??
You haven't gotten the memo from Fortress HQ.

Talent was never his problem. It was his attitude.
He thought he was better than everyone else (and maybe he was) but come game time others were more motivated and bar a few exceptions he rarely showed his class.
Its not the sort of attitude you need on tours. He's not exactly going to be thrilled about hold Owen Farrell's luggage like he did at Sarries so whilst in "fantasy" rugby he could have worked but in truth it would be like dropping a grenade on the tour bus.
I think I'd rather have ROG tour again with the usual post game howlers... "I was concussed" or "the bookies had a hitman on me" etc etc.

rather sums up English ignominious contribution to the B and I Lions doesn't it
1997 Jenkins kicks the Lions to victory.
2001 Jonny throws interception pass which marks turning point in game and series.
2005 Apart from Sir Clive's half way decent entry for the Eurovision song contest, the largely English contingent of Old Guard from 2003 let the whole side down again. The Power of One doesn't mean just your English mates Clive.
2009 Vickery scrummages us into defeat from the get go, before Bomb comes on to steady the ship meanwhile ROG, who is half English, drops another bomb.
