The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Cari wrote:Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I sincerely hope that the government doesn't use the results of this poll to form policy. What one thousand people think about a subject can't possibly be taken to represent the views of the whole country.
Ah yes, that's really an issue that merits a yes or no question.
What about this one:
"do you think the Government killing 300,000 cattle a year at a cost of millions of pounds of public money between the cost of killing the cattle, compensating the farmers and incinerating the carcasses as they are not allowed into the food chain, is a sensible use of public funds?"

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Kiwi, I saw a programme once about the wildlife of New Zealand and Australia and it said that the first Europeans to arrive there described the dawn chorus as deafening. The problem was that so many of the native birds had evolved to be flightless and were defenceless against the rats and cats that the Europeans brought with them.

Oh! And if Dublin DO host the finals it'll have to be another pub meet up eh? It could be even bigger.

I don't know. We're going to have to wait and see guys!
Thomond Park would be perfect for an Amlin final- is the RDS a possibility? Into the realms of pure speculation now. The CCS looked like it didn't sell out this year, but that may well have been the non-traveling Munster fans.
I think I'll definitely look for tickets if it's in Dublin.

I just read some comments on the Supporters facebook page - some don't seem to sure because of the timing of the announcement and venue. I guess it depends on whther they can use Croke Park?

Thats interesting. Why were there so few cats and rats in australia? Surely the flightless birds would have been vulnerable to other land mammals? Why would Australia and NZ evolve more flightless birds than Europe?
There are no native land mammals in NZ (except a couple of species of bat) - the islands split off from Australia without any. Fur seals and sea lions arrive later. As a result birds evolved to fill a lot of those niches. Hence the Moa was the big grazing animal (until wiped out by the Maori) and the Haast eagle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haast's_Eagle - 3 metre wing span) the main predator. A small species of rat (kiore) arrived with the Maori but wasn't prolific.
In Australia the only mammals were marsupials (kangaroos, possums, Tasmanian Tigers, Tasmanian Devils etc) until dingos arrived with the Aboriginals.

Rodders, there weren't any native land mammals (Kiwi, correct me if I'm wrong). On some of New Zealand's smaller islands, where the rats and so on didn't make landfall, you get a glimpse of what the whole of New Zealand was once like.

Thats interesting Luckless. I've yet to make it down under but that sort of suggests that european introduced rats and cats to australia and nz. What century was this?
Oops sorry Rodders I hit "edit" instead of "quote" and added the below to your post ...
Late 1700s for Australia, either late 1700s or early 1800s for NZ. Captain James Cook introduced pigs and goats to NZ in 1776. Rabbits, deer, possums, stoats and ferrets were all brought in for fur (or game) purposes in the 1800s.
I was wondering why I couldn't find my post - Kiwi

LEWIS
the League of Eire Wales Italy and Scotland.
(I am aware of the obvious problem, but it spoils the acronym to include the U)

You're not wrong. Have been browsing some of the other threads. I can't believe how many people are writing off Munster, using the 'rebuilding' argument. Have you ever known a weak Munster team? Getting anything out of a trip to Thommond Park in the Heinie is a task in itself. Castre can be a bit of an enigma - as we found out in the last campaign, but when on song, at home... I have to ask myself - where are our bonus points going to come from? Would fancy our chances against Scarlets though - but it ain't going to be easy!

I agree Custard. I think Munster will be very strong next season. Bar the quins result they've actually had a pretty good year. They've a few big names leaving like Warwick and Quinlan but have unearthed a few gems this year like Murray, Barnes, Zebo,Coughlin and Jones. If they can recruit a couple of top players then they'll be right back in the mix next year.

Yeah man, I did that last night re Munster, but I blame the vino. They will really be up for it this season.
So will Scarlets. Castres away can be tricky. We got caught out down there - badly.

Absolutely! Coughlan in particular has had a great year. Qualification requires bonus points on the road and that looks difficult. Mind you - it looks difficult for the whole pool! Saints need to keep their first team fully fit - I reckon we're still a season (or maybe even two) away from a squad (rather than a 1st XV).

Seriously, it's great to see them in the competition and will be a great trip for the travelling supporters. I have very fond memories of Galway - including a liaison with a very nice young German girl, in a tent on Spanish Arch!

It's just that the official name of the state which contains 26 of the 32 counties of Ireland is... Ireland. When it was named they maintained territorial claims over the whole island.
Republic of Ireland is a made-up name to differentiate between the nation state and the island. Like North Korea.
In rugby terms, Ireland is the island and not the state anyway.

No... If you're going to use English anmes for the countries, use English names exclusively. Or if you're going to use the native tongues of the countries do.
Either it's Eire, Cymru, Alba and Italia or Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.
