The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

- First 6 months in company you only have to give 1 weeks notice
- After 6 monhts in company your probation ends and its 1 month notice
- The probation ends after a successful formal appraisal
- I am 7 months in this jobs
- My boss hasn't got off his backside and done the appraisal
- QED - Red_Stag only has to offer 1 weeks notice
Ooooh, be very careful Stag. Your logic looks ok, but the second point would contradict it and the company could decide to enforce that instead.
They probably won't though. Most companies ask people to finish out their month because they need a replacement trained up, but as you're there a short time there probably isn't much for you to hand over. And companies don't want a member of staff who doesn't want to be there.
Then I walk away and contact my solicitor. I've read my contract several times and I explained the situation to employment agency. They said I'm fine. I suspect work will dispute it but i'll hold tough.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Dreamer, that is a good point. Personally I feel it is the height of bad form to give anybody a negative reference, no matter what the circumstances of the departure. Damn with feint praise, if necessary, but never be negative.

No seriously though it's best to keep everyone right you never know when you'll need a reference. Stag you could offer to work the month but they probably wouldn't hold you to it.

Prop, there's usually a tick box on application forms so you can request that referees are only contacted once an offer of employment has been made. Tick that box.

I wouldn't offer it and I feel that doing so would greatly affect my chances with the other company.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
If I was you, I'd want to leave on good terms. You may need a reference from them in the future. You don't want them saying that you walked out and left them in the lurch.
Say that you want to leave asap, but you don't want to see them stuck - they would probably be happy with 2 weeks notice.

I would Sin but to be honest its the way things are done around here. I had a pal working here 9 months. They kept offering her 3 month contracts and terminated her contract with 2 days notice.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Giving a week's notice is leaving on good terms because it was the company's duty to appraise him. There's no need to be nasty Stag, but if they try to pull a fast one, you are in the box seat, that's all you need to know. I'm sure you'll be...erm...civil...erm...and wont say anything rash or put your...erm...do you want me to talk to them?

No when it comes to work I am professional despite a blunt 606 persona. Had any sort of formal appraisal been done I would have held to it. However as far as I am concerned I have only obligation to provide a weeks notice. I suppose they can withhold my 2 weeks holiday pay if they wanted to.

They can't do that Staggy. The Working Time Directive 2003/88/EC saw to that when annual leave became a right.

I should know, I handed my notice into a company who sacked me for gross misconduct four hours later only so they wouldn't have to pay me holiday pay for the time off I'd booked. I notified HR of the WTD and received a cheque in the post.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
When I resigned from my last job I was worried about what he would say. I had it all planned in my head and I went in that day and spoke to my manager.
Robbo: "Can I have a word? I've been thinking about this for a while and..."
Manager: "You're handing in your notice?"
Robbo: "Um... yeah?"
Manager: "Cool, when do you want to be your last day?"
Robbo: "Uh, March 4th?"
Manager: "I'll put that in now."
Pretty surreal, but my manager left later that day, I guess he had already checked out! He put it all in the system though and passed my letter on to the next manager, so it was all sorted for me.
I too write "references available on request" on my CV, and if they request them I know they're interested. If they require that you give them during the application process, they should ask if you are happy for your references to be contacted. It's not a requirement but, as mentioned above, it's good practice.

No it won't stag. If your new company are worth working for then they will respect that you need to work your notice period. In fact it should reflect well on you that you are showing loyality. Beware any employer who pust pressure on you not to work your notice. If they want you for the role then they will wait 3 more weeks. My advice is not to burn bridges with your current employer no matter what they are like.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Rodders its sound advice but a week is what i'll be offering if it comes to it. I'll work every second of it too but i certainly won't be working another month.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Stag, cut the pear in half(as we say here)
offer to do 1 month, put in for your 2weeks holidays, and you end up getting a month's pay for 2 week's work.

My problem is I talk too much rugby (and non Irish rugby at that) for this place. I need to learn to be more trivial.
Awful weather here. What's the weather like at "insert Irish stadium here?"
Getting better like
Anyway, I finally officially move into my house on Friday.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
"Sale Sharks have announced centre Anitelea Tuilagi has left the club.
The 25-year-old, known as Andy, joined in August 2008 on a four-year contract after he was released by Leeds following their Premiership relegation."
So maybe the rumours are true then and he is on his way to RP. Not overly excited, but he would be a hard edged centre. He was a handful in the LV game in Jan. 3 tries in 42 games isn't great though. I guess Swanny would know more.
Pleased about the house. Course has been better but still tricky. Exam tomorrow.
Hope Hughie enjoyed Queens today. I guessed Murray would win.

Y'alright mob
Good news on the house Rev. I remember when I got my place; the feeling of satisfaction of having somewhere I could call 'home' was great. I had to move loads of times prior to that.
It's probably not of much interest to most in here, but does anyone else feel that Investec's decision not to renew their sponsorship of England's autumn internationals was instrumental in Steele losing his job?
Amongst other things that came out following the RFU's committee meeting last Thursday was a comment about Steele "Not engaging with key sponsors", and that some sponsors were less than impressed with the lack of contact from the RFU (presumably Steele specifically).
It was just a thought I had after digesting the rugby news over the weekend - more that no one who commented on Steele's demise mentioned this. Of course, there will be no AIs this year, so maybe Investec just thought it would be a good time to not renew the deal.

That was a joke goddammit.
What's the story with your contract Notts? I read back and you said it wasnt renewed. Cutbacks? I am starting to look for a contract again. It's not good out there man. But, you know that already.
Im thinking India and some "tax-advantage". Phhok it. They took ours. Let's take some back. I have an Indian mate who is searching for me. Rates are fairly good.

Gibbo, they're spending around £300M to implement SAP, but it appears that they're outsourcing, as to be honest, the infrastructure they've implemented so far is rudey poo. No startup/shutdown scripts. Cold OS backups. A load of rudey poo from start to end. I was last in and they're scaling back their testing, so one of the first out
