Common house spiders. We've had a lot of rain lately so they're obviously looking for a warm dry refuge.
Have to feel a bit sorry for our spider living in the UK if warmth and dryness is what they like.
Make a little cotton wool nest for it and take it up to Tino's. Pretty sure he'll have some space in the shed for it.
In amongst the thimble collection.

I did, however, buy that book you recommended - A Writer At War. I'm about half way through. Great book, really enjoying it so far.

Glad to hear it. I did try and read one of his fiction books (Life and Fate) but I don't think I have the attention span needed to read a book like that any more. As discussed the journalistic writings are something else.
Ice Cold in Alex is pretty good. The name is a reference to the beers in Alexandria that the key characters are looking forward to, and something used by Carlsberg in advertising. Its the kind of old black and white British war film you may have seen parts of as a kid, and is almost entirely about trying to get an ambulance through desert conditions in WWII. A big part is just getting the thing up a sandy slope that the engine can't cope with. They move it by using the starter handle.

Just downloaded it and had a look at a certain part. Very hard read. The scale of what happened in the East is mind boggling. What I can't get my head around today during the current situation in Ukraine is that there are some who seem to want a repeat of all the death and destruction. Sending arms and military logistic teams and threatening the Russians is not going to end well. It could escalate very quickly. Then suggesting that if the Russians and Chinese work together (would be difficult but it's not out of the question) is something that we definitely don't want.
The Ukrainians and Russians might have the stomach to fight for their homelands, culture, etc but us Westerners need to keep out. Unless those looking for a fight really want to be involved in saving a 'democracy', which Ukraine isn't as yet, even though there may be millions of their citizens who wish for that. I just don't think Liz Truss has thought things through properly, or more likely, simply has no clue about the real brutal history of that part of the world. Her soft threats against Putin must make him laugh. They (Ukraine and Russia) can sacrifice again but I don't think 'we' can afford to sacrifice especially after the recent military interventions in the Middle East, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

It is a complicated situation and I can't pretend to know much detail at all. It is a huge step for all involved to start shooting, and the Russian army in particular has a lot of bark and very little bite, given that the Russian economy just can't support a serious military anymore. I do buy into the idea that Putin has been fighting an 'asymmetric' war against the West for some time - a little money in the pocket of the right politician here, a troll farm there is a lot cheaper (and deniable) compared to military acts. And of course Russian natural gas powers half of Europe. In theory that gives the Russians influence, but also means that the west has a degree of financial muscle that can hit the oligarchs in the only place they really care about.

I'm not Barry Cryer but I like his joke about the woman reading the bible on the train.
A young man sits down on a train opposite an old woman. Once the train is underway the old woman brings a bible out of her bag and starts reading it. But when the train gets into the next station the young man notices that she puts the bible away. And then when the train gets going she brings the bible out and carries on reading.
She repeats this same action over and over again and finally after five or six stops the young man has to ask, 'Excuse me, I've noticed that whenever the train is in a station you put your bible away, but once the train starts up again you bring the bible back out and carry on reading. I have to ask, is there some reason for this?'
To which the old woman replies, 'Why don't you just F*CK OFF!

I saw Barry Cryer several times at the Edinburgh fringe over the last 10 years. Such a natural wit and always came across as an immensely likable bloke. My dad is a bit of comedy nerd and adored ISIHAC so I grew up hearing his voice and comedy.
The list of people he worked with is pretty incredible. Started off writing for David Frost alongside Cleese, Chapman and Ronnie Barker. Wrote for Morecambe and Wise and the Two Ronnies. Collaborated with Spike Milligan and Tommy Cooper. Just incredible. His career was so prolonged that he was almost an umbilical cord to a different time in British comedy.
RIP Barry.

A man shoots a golden eagle, a protected species, and goes up before the magistrate.
'I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to shoot it,' he says. 'It just flew into my sights and I shot it by mistake.'
'Well, what did you do with it afterwards?' asked the magistrate.
'I ate it,' he said.
'You ate it!' said the magistrate. 'What did it taste like?'
'Rather like swan,' he said.
RIP Barry.

I'm not him but I also saw him once many years ago. Must have been about 2008. He was hosting some London Bullion Market Association dinner at some posh hall somewhere. He was very, very funny. He was wandering around talking to people before he starting hosting. Then he came out with this 15 minute opening speech about the LBMA Chairman that he just completely adlibbed after gathering a few stories from people. No notes, just pulled this guy to pieces in a friendly way based on stories he had got 30 minutes prior. Very amusing chap.
I think that was the last time I wore a tuxedo as well. I thought I looked alright but when I started talking, people assumed I was a waiter.

I did see an amusing Tw*tter exchange on t'internet yesterday. Some nondescript ex Corrie actor who is an anti-vaxxer campaigner was moaning that all his work had dried up and he was sleeping on a mattress at his mates place. Then it had a Tw*tter exchange below and some lady was insulting him and then put "that is some way to ruin you're career".
I immediately thought of Jeff/Geoff. He would have loved that.
I'm still willing to overlook one or two negative Tw*ets and remember the good times we shared with him.

I'm still willing to overlook one or two negative Tw*ets and remember the good times we shared with him.
SerialDAVE is still the only member unaccounted for. I like to think that he's loping across a foggy moor with his favourite axe in his hand but I fear the worst.
I'll try and get tickets to the next BON JOVI concert and see if I can find him. You can take the GOO GOO DOLLS gig if you don't mind? He is bound to be at one of them.
Even though I've never seen him before, I suspect I'd recognise him if I ever did see him.
The stench of corpse would be a big clue.

Sicond.
I saw that and was saddened to see Jeff use his twitter celebrity to spread negativity. He should be using his celebrity for good causes - like eradicating malaria or sorting out the famine in Afghanistan.
In his defence, his previous t***t was a scathing critique of the education system after a poster used the phrase 'more later'.
