The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

On a positive note that Murray looks a smashing player. Is he the real deal or just a great white hope?
Reddan is a good facilitator of the style of rugby we need to play but I don't think he's a very good player. I'd certainly stick with him in the WC.

Agree about Reddan. Think he's a lot poorer than many fans think but he should start in RWC. As for Murray I have wondered this myself and this is in many ways what prompted me to think about O'Leary. After the Australia game it was the young Duncan Williams who was the big hope and its not too late for him or O'Leary to steal Murrays limelight.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I'd say that Eoin Reddan is similar to Richie Rees - both are nippy and get the ball away but they're not great players.

Here’s a question (I know I asked this on the old 606) Why have Ireland never produced a “great” scrum half?
There are legends of the Irish game in every jersey bar number 9. why oh why!?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't have produced a "great" scrum half. There should have well been one by now.
is it a position that only the small people choose because they are not big enough for other positions.
Where as other positions alot of players tailor their training to be an expert in that position.
I think scrum half is picked by the coaches growing up and if players had the choice they would rather play somewhere else.
seems to have a best of the rest feel about that position in ireland.

I think it's just by chance that we haven't produced a great scrum half, I mean we haven't produced many greats in other positions either. I'd say one will come along eventually.

What was the name of yerman who was on the underage team that won the world championship with BOD, DOC P Wallace etc.?
Was it Ciaran Manion or something like that? He was tipped for greatness (as many are in fairness) but was badly injured and retired.

I don’t mean great in relation to the rest of the world, but there are Irish “greats” in every position.
Corrigan – Wood – Hayes
Keane – McBride
Jennings– Duggan – Slattery
?? – ROG/Kyle/Ward/Campbell
Geoghan/Hickie - Gibson – BOD – Horgan/O’Reilly
Kiernan
Each of those players could be considered Irish legends. The closet thing we have to that at SH is Stringer, who was effective but not in the same class as the others.

I don't think a lot of those guys are great Mick.
Hayes, Corrigan, Jennings, ROG, Hickie and Horgan definitely shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the other players mentioned.

Of course not. Don’t be ridiculous.
I’ve left out plenty of players who fall into that category too (Paul Wallace, O’Connell, The Claw, Gallaimh etc.) But none of them are scrum halves.

Ciaran Scally. He was in the same year as BOD in Blackrock. Interesting article about him here. By the way, he got the injury that apparently finished his career in a schoolboy international against England.

I'd say bar centre, fly- half and 2nd row we haven't produced more than one player in a position who would be classed as "great".
The fact that there's no one who stands out at 9 is not really that surprising.

Two players on each wing? Look the point is we are not exactly awash with greats in every other position either and if we're going to throw players like Jennings, Horgan Hayes etc in the we may as well include stringer. However no one in their right mind would class stringer as a "great" scrum half.

Lads, whatever about Hayes and Corrigan, but ROG Hickie and Horgan are card carrying members of the Irish legend brigade.
Jennings was clearly a pishtake.

No they aren't Mick. Brilliant players yes but not in the sense McBride, Gibson, Kyle, BOD, O'Connell etc. were/are. All amongst the best and most respected players in the world of their era.

I mean neither Stag, in Ireland we're prone to hyperbole, 3 pints in an hour is a good drinking pace, but it's not EPIC, 2 tries in a a great achievement game doesn't make you a LEGEND etc.
I mean in the imaginary Irish hall of fame that i just invented.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
rodders, we're talking about how well they are regarded in Ireland - were they standout players in the teams they played in, not in the rest of the world.
For instance, Simon Geoghegan would be considered an Irish legend - but he never got the chance to play on a Lions Tour which is where all those you mention stood out. Willie John earned his legendary status with the Lions. Same with Tony O'Reilly - brilliant for the Lion, not great for Ireland. The reason that may be is because they trained a bit more together when with the Lions back then.

Exactly. If you (any of us) were to name your best Irish team of all time, scrum half would be the weakest position.

If thats the case then Stringer should be included and this whole discussion is redundant.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Lads, a few defintion of Legend
a. An unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical.
b. A romanticized or popularized myth of modern times.
c. A traditional historical tale (or collection of related tales) popularly regarded as true but usually containing a mixture of fact and fiction
So you see, they can all be liginds
Seriously, I guess it's about perception in & outside the country and the ever popular "your own opinion"
For example 'global' Welsh legends would be JPR, Gareth, Barry John, ..etc, yet within Wales we'd say perphaps that these were legends - Paul Ringer (victim of cruel miscarraige of justice), Scott Gibbs (love the guy but don't think of him as a 'global' legend), Paul Thorburn (that kick !!)
Not sure if that's helped you guys really, but as I say - just an opinion

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Ciaran Fitz was a hooker, not a scrumhalf.
I think Colin Patterson would be regarded as the best Irish scrumhalf (and he made a Lions tour). Still, he only got 11 caps for Ireland. The there was Michael Bradley (40 caps).
Stringer may not be regarded as being a top class player, but he sure as heck must have had something to win 98 caps for Ireland over the last 11 years and he has been involved in some great wins for Ireland.
No one can touch Stringer for bossing his pack and keeping them all on their toes.

Fiar play Pete for getting the definition of a legend. I don't think Mickado is claiming legendary status as say "world class". its just their stature in the country for rugby team club/country/lions.
In other news, I think losing weight is effecting my level I can drink. Last Saturday had 6 pints and that was the first time where the misus felt she I was drunk.. said she has seen me have 3 times that and still not feel like I was drunk.
Had 3 last night and felt tipsy. Strange only lost a blydi stone and half.. dag namit.

Pete, I agree. That’s what I’m getting at. Although Ireland have had some global legends like McBride, Duggan, BOD, Wood etc. the players in the team I named are more like local legends.

I lost over 2 stones in 3 months last year and noticed I became tipsy a bit quicker. Tolerance soon built back up though.
