The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

In Ireland you can drive to the driving test, fail, and then drive home. It used to be the case that you could just send off for a provisional licence, and drive around for the rest of your life without ever doing a test. Thousands of people did this, including my dad. When they changed the rules, there was such a back log that they just sent my dad a full licence without him needing to do a test at all.

Munsty,
If you ever come to visit I will remember your opinion of female drivers!

My wife is a careful driver, she always slows down when going through a red light.

When driving in Ulster I've seen the 'P' plate. Is that compulsory for new drivers?
I Eire I think they have a Gaelic equivalent.
In the UK a P plate is optional - mostly enforced by anxious parents and timid newbies.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I had a great drive to my accountant yesterday morning (this morning your time) - all went well.
However for the first time I noticed one of those mobile light sign boards which said:
"CAUTION - WALLABIES CROSSING NEXT 5 KM"
Never seen that before in Sydney, in fact I didn't think we had them in the metro area - although the road is through a national park...close to the 'Home' of Skippy. Then I read an article in a local rag which asks motorists to slow down in this particular area (the road is like a rollercoaster and well sealed) because over 50 wallabies have been killed in recent weeks. Huge fines now apply if you are caught speeding there.
Good idea to have these warnings - makes you realise how close the wildlife is.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It's R not P. P is probationary, it's a voluntary thing. R stands for restricted.
It means you can't go faster than 45mph for a year or something. It is or was compulsory for new drivers for a year. They might have gotten rid of it now, I'm not sure. I hope so. I always thought it was a silly idea.
How are you going to learn how to navigate a motor way if you can't drive faster than 45mph when you're learning?

Surely you shouldn't be allowed to drive on the motorway if the maximum speed you can drive is 45 mph.

What is a nuisance on dual carriageways is restricted vehicles trying to over take each other.

Asbo says,
"Nevermind, Munsty, yer blood pressure will fare better in the back of a taxi! "
At least he'll know he has a better than even chance of making it past the Albert Clock and City Hall without ploughing into them!
Actually, a double decker bus toppled over after hitting the wall outside Central Station the other day.
Where were you on Sunday oh kilted one?

In the Republic of Ireland you're technically not allowed drive on a motorway until you have a full licence. But I've never seen the cops pulling people over on a motorway to check their licences. It's a law that's not enforced. Just like our pub closing times and our financial regulations.

Actually, aren't we better drivers too?
Women are apparently better at driving with passengers - talking, listening and driving is multi-tasking . Women do have less accidents per year than men (hence the cheaper insurance premiums), however a few studies have shown that the accident rate is much closer on an accidents per 10,000 miles driven basis than accidents per year, as on average men do more miles of driving. There's also some stats about performance varying at different times of day between genders too - but I can't remember exactly how it plays out.
Men are generally better navigators though - spatial awareness

It's amazing how their rear view mirror and seat has moved by itself when they fill the car up with fuel, they have to readjust the whole lot before they drive off.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
P in England stands for "Passed", it is completely optional and it let's other road-users know that you have only just passed and basically just asks for a bit of patience in case you stall/are slow off the mark etc. But as soon as you get your licence it is full and unrestricted, the only "restriction" being the "New Drivers' Act", which states that if you get 6 points in your first 2 years you get your licence taken away again.

Men are hunters. That's why we're better at navigation and competitive sports. Women are gatherers. That's why they like shopping so much

This whole "spatial awareness" thing? How come they aren't so "spatially aware" of the other car (or ancient monument) they are just about to hit?

Most terrifying driver I've been in a car with was a mate of mine when we were 17. Male, just passed his test, hand off the wheel, taking corners at 40mph without checking his mirrors kind of thing.
It's carelessness and bravado that pushes our premiums up! Most girls I've been in the car with are very careful.
I'll not be drawn on the 'better drivers' thing. Save to say I'm a guy and I'm awful. Never got my test.

Did you know? There are 2 William Webb Ellis Cups. Identical. One of them is touring NZ- the other must be in a cabinet in South Africa or something?

Doesn't discussion in a 'normal' pub revolve around all sorts of things usually? Conversations normally get back to rugby in the end and that's what counts

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
MrsP - Portnoys was complaining about the opposite - that too much rugby was being discussed in here and not outside, and because this pub is (apparently) exclusive and segregated, non-pub goers missed these brilliant rugby conversations. Of course people can't just click on this thread and read it...

Just realised that Notch has been subjected to the terrifying experience of being a passenger in the P bus.
And lived to tell the tale!
Yeah Cari, I saw it but was either too late to answer or deep in convo at the time.
Do you have to put in where you want to go or just what you want to do or what?(That's the big thing you were writing earlier I'm talking about!)

It's like any other job application but specific to my present employer, and there is a section where you explain the locations where you're willing/able to work. You're then matched/mapped into a suitable post.
Munsty - beauty is vague because different people have different perceptions of it. Attraction is unique to the individual. Assuming you're speaking of aesthetics.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Beauty is surely subjective to some extent. We all seem to share aesthetic criteria to some extent (sunsets, flowers and Keira Knightley* all considered to be beautiful by a lot of us) and what we find aesthetically pleasing is often similar. But there is room for subjective interpretation there as well.

Cari,
Are you just doing your normal job in the mean time?
Munsty,
I would say both are subjective. Also there are people I can see are outwardly beautiful but I wouldn't be attracted to them.

I just read that on teletext that David Wallace is out of the France match (minor hamstring injury). Jennings has been called into the squad to replace him. I hope he has a great game and gets on the plane to New Zealand.

He's in the 22 alright Gibbo. But David Wallace may have torn his hamstring, thats a massive issue for us if true.
I assume Jennings will start at 7, instead of Ferris. They probably don't want to rush Ferris.

Its true. Wally has a minor calf strain. So he will be ok for the RWC, TG - we need him. Might even make it for England. But Im delighted that Jenno may get his chance in a full-strength 15. That has never happened. If Deccie moves SOB to 7 and brings 1F in... He's mad.
