The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the David Pocock photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Alright maybe not lock them up. But if they have a genetic predisposition towards violence surely we need to keep an eye on them?

Gibbo,
the really sad thing is they already do this to a section of society. Trouble is, they are the ones least likely to commit crime of any type and still they don't even go them a chance.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I don't think there's any evidence any of those guys are psychopaths though Gibbo?
Psychopaths are specifically profoundly lacking empathy, incapable of guilt or remorse, unable to understand the emotional states of others and generally manipulative.
None of those things are crimes. But they do make yo statistically more likely to commit crimes.

Genetic predisposition towards psychopathy, not violence, to be exact (see above).

hughie1986 wrote:What has ever, I hear you ask, come out of cork??? Well honestly ladies and gentlemen I'm as stumped as you.
Langers will claim that Irelands greatest footballer came from Cork. Very true, if you consider a player who walks out on their country in the middle of a World Cup your greatest player.
Paul McGrath. Then Brady. Then Giles. 3 Dubs. Keane was and still is a knacker. Total and utter knacker. A self-confessed thug too.
What about Sonia O'Sullivan they cry, the greatest athlete the country ever produced. Well she's from Cobh and I reckon even The Right Honorable Gentleman Thomond would agree that people from Cobh are breed upon themselves, a bunch of pikeys who cross bread with some badgers. And let's be honest she can't even make it 1500m without Poopie herself.
Ah now leave off Sonia. I love Sonia. We had pints at Schiphol once. We talked of World Championships.
What's that from the back??? Michael Collins??? True True a great man no doubt, shame Ye had to shoot him in the back
Basterds!
Jack Lynch, good call, very good Taoiseach, so good in fact that they built a tunnel and named it after him, shame its sinking into the harbour though
Great hurler and an honest man.
Cork, its a wonderful place
I love Cork. Like France... shame about the residents.

I think the point is that not everyone who lacks empathy is a psychopath, however all psychopaths lack empathy as part of their makeup.

The Detective takes the floor. Based on hard-experience, education and FACT. Man, you must see and have to deal with some sheet. I wasnt protecting lunatics or psychos. I just think we have to be careful as a Society. Careful we dont turn into self-serving Little Hitlers. Like Thatcher. BOTH psychos. And miss the Beauty and Joy we can gain from the madness of genius. Musically, Literature, Scientifically. Vision. Everything that really matters.

I deal with people Gibbo. I try not to use any other labels than that. I work with people who are bumholes, and deal with 'criminals' who I have more of an affinity with.
To do my job with a them and us attitude is fraught with danger, and not just physical, the danger of failing to see what is right and making the wrong decision and adversely affecting peoples lives.

Love ya mate. Couldn't even begin to deal with and handle, what you deal with on a day-to-day basis. Just couldn't. Then you come home, try to lose the taste of that nastiness, you've just experienced, switch mindset and cuddle yer family.
Fancy a ride pal?

I deal with some good things too mate, and the coming home and cuddling my girls is the easy part. Learned years back how to switch between work and home modes, would have gone crazy if I hadn't.

Strange that on the evening we talk about psychopaths Face/Off is on BBC 3. Now surely we can agree character John Travolta plays for the majority of the film is unquestionably a psychopath?

Most of these brain scans are fMRI where basically they take two MRI scans (before and after a particular stimulus) and use statistics analysis to look for difference.
There's a bit of statistical cowpat involved and they notorious for not reporting null findings (only report the positives) which completely skews the data and means it's pretty unreliable.
I also heard the other day that they're not as sure as they were that DNA is the be all and end all of inheritance. We've recently downgraded the risks involved with radiation damage and inherited genetic defects because there seems to be little effect.
We're a long long way off truly profiling people based on brain scans or DNA (I hope)

He loves his brother doesn't he? Been a while since I watched it. Anybody watch Dexter?
Not sure what a sociopath is but it's also bandied about. Actually just consulted the mighty Wikipedia and apparently the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath is the cause. Whether it's a issue from birth (psychopath) or a developed issue (sociopath).

That makes so much sense to me. Ive worked with them in The City. Ýes. The profile fits. I thought I was a mad working-class hero, in Thatcher's Britain. Lots of fights. Took me years to realise that my rants in City wine-bars - were true and came true.

Indeed. Not reporting negative results is a massive problem in all fields of science actually. Arguably a flaw in the publication system; it does sort of promote this kind of behaviour. You're not going to forge a good career on negative results; you're probably not even going to get your paper accepted. But they may be pretty essential to our understanding of things in the long run.
You're quite right. It's one of those interesting ethical questions though; and dare I say, important. Because this science is being used in courts in the USA. Science is always the best theory of the moment. Until something better replaces it.

Just another tough day in Africa.

Morning Biltong. I'm not jealous at all!
Bad news about Cian Healy, he's a dynamo around the field, but at least he's likely to be fit for the rest of the group matches.

Quote from the Irish Independent RWC special:
"Declan Kidneys own experiences as a player explain his loyalty to Paddy Wallace, a player our theorist believes reminds the Ireland coach a lot of himself".

Oh I feel ill. I've been so good fitness wise in last few weeks - training hard, only eating shoite or having booze rarely etc.
Tucked into a large breakfast roll just now. Feel awful
Also anyone know how easy it is to change emails. I want to move from Hotmail to Gmail. Is it more trouble than worth.
