First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current props' pictures on the bar. We've got Castrogiovanni, Beast, the Franks brothers, Mas, Tonga'uiha, Roncero, Cian Healey (as demanded by Hughie), Stevens, Murray, Mike Ross, Adam Jones and Steenkamp all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence Wink

So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Fair play T. I can feel the match sharpness coming back. I'm playing up front and doing some good holding up play and making some good decisions. Once my fitness improves, I'll start making some stronger runs and hopefully use the pace I have.

Rev,

You watching the rugby tomorrow?

I've never been to the races either Rev, but it's supposed to be a brilliant day out. Forgot about that Four Nations thing as well, that looks like it's going to be a great day too Smile

Cari - yeah hopefully that'll be a great weekend, I love the derby matches.

Evening all.

I hope everyone is ok, despite the predeliction of some to hit the 'send' button a bit too much.

As' birthday drinks tomorrow; should be a good evening with the other London based regs. It normally is Smile.

I expect much banter over the weekend's encounter with the Auld Enemy Wink

Hi Cymro - I hope the weather held up for you on Ynys Mon-sur-mere Smile.

I saw some of Wales' tries on Sky news earlier. Some nice finishes there.

How far do you think Wales can go this time around? Your guys are well under the radar as far as I'm concerned.

You will have too much for Fiji. BP win in that one thumbsup

Then it's all about winning in the knock out stages. It doesn't matter how you do it. Take the points on offer and pressure the opponent. Wales are starting to realise that, and this is where Gatland will get your guys focussed. He has previous with that mentality.

As long as the boys don't think that they can play against Fiji as they did against Samoa and still win.

If Ireland play Wales I would be very wary of them. Good at the breakdown, although they were bested at times by Namibia today. Ireland could be tested by Warburton as we don't have a classic number 7. They play simple rugby, bash it up the middle to open up space for the back three but it's working. Scrum is solid and the lineout if an improving area but I think it could be an area Ireland would target. It will be pretty great if we play them!

I' trying to work out all the permutations of the group stages;

Group A
New Zealand have qualified in first place.
France require only a losing bonus point to definitively seal second place.

Group B
Any kind of win over Scotland for England would see them through in 1st. A 5-point win for Argentina would guarantee them a spot in the quarters and 1st place IF England don't get anything from Scotland (lose by more than 8 points). If Scotland beat England by a greater margin than 8 points they are through. They need at least a point to even stay in contention and that would mean Argentina would need to get nothing against Georgia so it's win or bust against the Auld Enemy.

Group C
Any kind of Ireland win will guarantee them 1st place, but they could fall as low as third if Italy either beat the USA with a bonus point and beat them, or beat USA and Ireland denying Ireland a bonus point. A bonus point win for Australia against Russia will guarantee them a quarter-final spot, where they finish depends on the outcome of Ireland vs Italy. Italy simply need to win both games either with a bonus point against the USA or denying Ireland a losing bonus point.

Group D
Any kind of South African win would see them through in 1st place, meaning any kind of point for Wales would see them through in second- should they lose it becomes a lot more complicated. A Samoan win with the bonus point would see the Islanders on 15 points, as would a Wales bonus point win over Fiji. Should South Africa pick up a losing bonus point that would the top three deadlocked on 15 points each, meaning the teams would be seperated by points difference. Otherwise, Samoa need to get more points from their last game than Wales do or beat South Africa with four tries and deny them a losing bonus point to get through. Wales will probably qualify if they can match or better Samoas result or Samoa get nothing out of the South Africa game. Fiji have an incredibly slim chance of progressing in 2nd should they take all five points against Wales and rack up an incredibly high score and Samoa and Wales take nothing from their respective games.

Thomond, I'm not being obtuse, but I reckon with a decent ref we'd have you. That is, someone to stop your nonsense at the scrum and breakdown. I just have a feeling Australia was your final.

I don't know what happened there. It said it didn't work. Crap mobile Internet again (less than 3G). Should give up. Thanks for tidying it up Dreamer.

Can't watch any rugby Munsty. On a course and no tv. Have at least sky plussed the Welsh game.

Anyway, I haven't got the patience for this again. Stupid mobile reception. Don't know why it said it didn't work when it did.

Nonsense at the breakdown? I suppose we are guilty of not rolling away and I have noticed a few times whereby we have gone straight from tackling to rucking without releasing but I don't think we get away with that much. Wales' scrum got away with a bit in the 6N,Healy is guilty of binding on the arm at times, which is illegal and fairly dangerous.

Thomond, your hands are all over the ball like a cheap hooker. Get a decent ref who'll ping you and you do a Scotland. Get a weak ref and you do an Australia. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, that's how you set out your stall. It's up to us to stop you.

Unless the ref calls "No hands" it is fair game to compete for the ball.

Sorry Thomond, this is a running theme on the pub for me. The others know not to take it too seriously. We'll have a proper argument about it after that match, if it ever happens. thumbsup

Should Wales and Ireland meet, it will undoubtedly be a close game between two sides of relatively equal ability. Agree on how the referee applies the laws and more importantly how well we adapt to his interpretation will be key. As far as Wales are concerned, it's about whether they can generate enough quick ball. Our pack is quite a barsteward to deal with regardless of the referee. Should we start with O'Gara we have a 10 capable of controlling the game and putting us in areas Wales really don't want to play from.

You could say any player is due one of their off days really. 'Isn't x due an off day?'. I don't know, you don't know. We're just going to have to wait and see who fronts up on the day should both sides meet.

Wales are an excellent side now. I do feel we haven't seen the best of either side yet but I am quite wary of Wales. More concerned with getting there first of course.

No you're right of course. It's just that he has a dark side that pops up every now and again. Kicks get sliced out of hand, his aim at the posts fails him. We are playing now like we played in '08. It is for us a personnel issue, who can we keep fit. I think Gatland is capable if dropping stars who are not up to it, I'm not sure if Kidney is.

Swanny - I thought your 'name game sports stars' thread meant something completely different! Whistle

Wales will get to a q/f as will Ireland. Argentina are almost a shoo in. Scotland v England - despite England having the 2nd best defensive record in the tourny (behind SA), and having a huge advantage in points difference, and tries scored, there are no givens in a Calcutta Cup game.

NZ and France, plus Australia will be the other contestants. It really is only between England and Scotland for the last q/f berth.

Back in about 15 minutes. Was doing cuppa tonight. It's where we go out and serve hot drinks to people on a night out in the street for free. First time I've done it and I really enjoyed it.

Just going to stay up for the rugby now.
