Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current props' pictures on the bar. We've got Castrogiovanni, Hika Reid, The Beast, Colin Windon, the Franks brothers, Mas, Tonga'uiha, Roncero, Cian Healey (as demanded by Hughie), Stevens, Murray, Mike Ross, Adam Jones and Steenkamp all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ha why does it have to be logical?
I think it was the general love in of Ashton that made some people dislike him. Not rational but it happens.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The fact that Ashton is disliked by supporters of other teams is a good thing. It means he is a decent player. If he was not, then no supporters of other nations would take any notice of him as what he does would be irrelevant.
I'm not sure why England fans get so annoyed at supporters of other nations not liking Ashton.

Yeah but I wouldn't slap him. He looks the kind of guy who would sit on your face until you passed out.
Nah, none of the Scottish players have that punchability factor. They've no Henson/Cipriani equivalent. I think that when compared to Premiership footballers I'd like to slap rugby holds up really well

BTW I wasn't directing it at you. Just making the point that there a massive deal over it when Ashton did it but it's been done for ages.
Pete, it's the reasons given not the dislike itself. I remember someone saying he comes across as arrogant in interviews and then when asked to give any example couldn't remember one (and I don't mean couldn't find a link, just could remember it actually happening).

Best one I heard was from a Scottish commentator on BBC Alba in a game between one of the Scottish sides and Munster. "Ronan O'Gara, what a marvellous player he is... horrible person though"

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
If I was an England fan I wouldn't be bothered at all by people saying they don't like Ashton.
Look at the comments under any youtube clip of O'Driscoll. Somewhere a non-Irish person will pop up in the comments and write something derogatory about BOD. And then some Irish fans will go into a blind rage, cursing and insulting the person who dares say their hero is cr@p.
But I always think they should get a grip. There's a reason why fans of other teams say they hate O'Driscoll and they never seem to say they hate Kevin Maggs. I wonder what that reason is?

Exactly feckless
Anyway, the least likable and perhaps most controversial player is not necessarily Ashton. It's a guy who I follow on twitter.
http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,3818_7214820,00.html
Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolo. Actually it's not that he's that unlikable he just seems to have no ability to filter out what he should or shouldn't say online. He also seems very immature and a terrible loser. I would think he would have learned his lesson from last time before indulging in some drunken twittering. And he played very well against the Boks, so it's a real shame.

All the Ashton hatred will disappear when he drops the ball mid dive in the world cup final. Assuming England get there of course.

The wrong mouth guard???
Do they mean some terrible sort of mouth guard which has been associated with causing injury to other players?
Or do they mean a mouth guard manufactured by a company which is not an official sponsor?

Yep MrsP, Samoa were fined NZ10,000 for a player wearing a mouthguard made by a company that is not an 'official partner' of the RWC. One pundit made this point; ""So England swap the ball for conversions and the IRB does nothing. Samoa wear the wrong brand of mouthguard and get fined 10k."
http://www.independent.ie/sport/rugby/world-cup/other-news/fury-at-samoa-mouthguard-fine-2893235.html
And you know, thats the kind of thing that makes me really sympathetic to the Samoan cause. But your man on twitter comparing the scheduling of Samoas games to the Holocaust and accusing the referee of racism- well, he basically needs to catch himself on doesn't he? In a major way.
He's just one voice, one player but it clouds the issue. Now the issue is about his behaviour whilst Wales and the Boks can feel rather glad about the lack of recovery time the Samoans had between games compared to them! I'm not bashing those two teams because they deserved to go through but the scheduling has been an issue in this tournament, with Tier 1 sides getting a favourable draw. Ireland are one of the sides who have benefited most from the scheduling in fact.

The scheduling has been unfair alright.
I know they are saying the mouthguard thing was a contractual obligation but it dos seem petty.
If it was my mouth I would like to decide what I use to protect my own teeth thank you very much!

If LDCPete pops in, I wonder what you made of Hala'ufia's late hit on Ollie Morgan. Use of the head, knee and a swinging arm. He might get cited for that.
Ooh, lovely try by the Irish winger O'Jo. Great line. 23-17 to Glaws at the moment.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Got to say, I'm really proud of the Welsh team, they are finally growing up, I love the fact that they are voluntarily not drinking this world cup:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/welsh/15135951.stm?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
I sayd back in the 6Nations that I thought it was ridiculous that they still went out drinking during the middle of the tournament. In the women's game tehre's a complete ban on it for the 2 months before and the duration of it. I'm glad the men's side is finally becoming just that bit more professional!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, it was a bad one. Basically, a flying head butt, knee and swinging arm as well. He got a yellow for it - proably because Morgan didn't milk it.
I've seen similar from CH before when he tried to rough up Wasps' half backs a couple of seasons ago. He's a bloody good player and doesn't to be doing stuff like that.
Two tries apiece at ht. Voyce and a pt for Glaws, an intercept by Alex Gray, and Ojo's aforementioned try fo Irish.

Great stuff from Irish at the start of the 2nd half. Peno and a super line by Shingler to bust the Glaws defence after good work in the tackle by Thompstone.
Feic, Glaws hit back - Dawidiuk in the corner.
30-27, good game this.

He has got form unfortunately Hound, which if it's as you say, probably means he will get cited and banned.
It's a shame, because on form he is as good a ball carrier as there is in the league, but we always lose him for spells as he seems to get banned at least once every year for a somewhat dubious tackle.

There's some really good stuff from the youngster's in this game. England will be fielding one hell of a backline in the not too distant future. The Academy system is delivering

Nearly nicked it at the end Pete. Super kick out to Ojo unmarked on the wing. Of course, the ball bounced up an back over his head. A kind bounce and he was in.
Thems the breaks bud.
Gotta say, Jamie Joseph parnering Tuilagi in midfield and Sharples outside them for England would be just the ticket. Possibly with Bowden at 10.....
When he qualifies.

I did suggest a future England midfield of 12. Tuilagi 13. Joseph on another thread the other day and the general consensus was that Manu doesn't have the hands to play 12, however I question whether HRH's hands are any better than Manu's.
