The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of the captains of the World Cup Quarter Finalists pictures on the bar. We've got Sam Warburton, Brian O'Driscoll, Lewis Moody, Thierry Dusautoir, John Smit, James Horwill, Felipe Contepomi and Richie McCaw.
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I did create one for my google account - but haven't seen it being used. It said that my selected image would appear from time to time (to verify it was me using the account) but so far I haven't noticed it anywhere.
Exactamundo. I didn't know google already offered one, what does it entail?
Luckless, yeah the seal could be (hypothetically) a password, a barcoded card that you scan, a flash drive that you carry around. Whatever makes most sense.

That would just make sense, wouldn't it? I wouldn't be worried about it affecting my privacy because I'd be choosing when to use it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Still not sure how it works Mickado.
Say if I logged on in an internet cafe in Brazil - would it flash up some images and ask me to select the correct one to verify it was actually me?
Not sure if it would simply ask me for my password, to confirm the seal... or both? Also, would I have to remotely access (upload) the seal from the cloud or could someone else take a punt and pick the correct image if say only 3 alternatives were presented?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
So purely hypothetically you come to Mickado Inc and ask me to verify you are who you are. I have a contract with all of the banks in the world whereby they have vetted my processes and security procedures to find that I’m reliable etc.
I check that you live at your address, you have the DOB you say you do etc. and I award you with a barcoded card (for example) with no number, just a barcode. This is now you and your details. You log into an internet café in Brazil and you want to check your bank details, enter your name and scan your card. You want to rent a car in Brazil, give them your name, they scan your card.
I use a card as an example but it could be anything (like a chip under your skin or something!). I would say anything like this will take years and years before we see it being used widely and it will probably take a government to introduce it but I would say it will definitely be something that will be widespread in the future.

Bikkies,
You know me and "techie" stuff but there is an ad for ?HSBC? at the moment with some elderly ?Chinese? man showing his grandaughter how to open a magic box and then using some yoke to allow him sole access to his online banking.
Not sure if that is the sort of thing you're talking about?
Staggy!
Not been on FB so I'll "Happy Birthday" you now!

Afternoon pub.
Kiwi should be coming with us to Wasps v Bath on Sunday. We got him a free ticket.
And yay!! Nicky Robinson and Marco Wentzel are back for us.
We've missed those boys in recent weeks.

Kiwi - and I put a lovely picture of you up on your wall in all your Ireland gear. I wasn't sure did you want Ireland to win or just want Australia to lose that day.

That’s exactly the type of thing I’m talking about MrsP, that’s a token that the bank give you to verify that you are you when you’re doing transactions with them. But what I’m talking about is a token that you obtain and bring to the bank to prove you are you, rather than bringing birth cert, utility bill, payslip etc.
I use a similar token thingy to log onto my work laptop when I’m at home.
I hope it wasn’t really a technical question I was asking, I was hoping to come at it more from a consumer point of view.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
They already have the iris / fingerprint recognition technology in some businesses. Even saw some guy on TV who had a chip implant (no, not talking about a rugby fan...) who could swipe open doors, etc.
We are well on the way to this already but I remember years ago when there was talk of the "Australia Card" - all details (tax, medical, insurance,...) were to be embedded on it - or potentially could be stored on it.
There was a bit of an uproar about loss of privacy and all your information being stored on the one card.
Ironically, over the last 20 years - this has sort of happened anyway... and millions of us have given out all sorts of personal info to banks, stores, utility companies, tax offices, etc and who knows how much of this is sold to or swapped with other corporations' databases to build even more detailed databases on our buying habits, favourite holiday destinations, etc.
Imagine driving down the road and your phone goes off - telling you there is a shoe sale on in a store you are just passing or cheaper petrol is on your left... It's a fine line between providing useful information and harrassment!
Your scheme seems OK though. But the barcode is effectively 'a number' anyway. So if you lost the card - could someone else pretend to be you still?

I suppose the main worry for me would be that if the "token" was "stolen" ie forged, it could provide open access to a whole lot of stuff.
An "all you eggs in one basket" type thing?

Finger print/Irish recognition - You'd have to cut off a head and a hand to be forging.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Too be honest, I've been cutting back my interweb use at work, so I stopped going on FB from here a while back. Then in mid-August I realised I hadn't been on for a few days without missing it, so decided to see how long I could make it last. I do have a couple of trips worth of photos to share though (including my ones from Mick's bash) so will duck back this weekend or next.
Stag, I did promise Hughie I'd wear something green (and not gold) on the day - forgetting that I don't actually own very many green shirts so had to resort to the old polo shirt from the Guinness brewery souvenir shop in Dublin. It was virtually impossible to not cheer for Ireland at the Walkie, the atmosphere was immense.

Happy Birthday Stag!
you could just make a copy of someone else's finger print on some high tech 'film' and stick it to your finger... as was done in a Bond film?
Or a fake replica eyeball - people will stop at nothing!

Well once I start my new job I'll hardly be here I expect. I don't come in much in the evenings as it is because I'm doing other things, but I will pop my head around the door from time to time. With FB, it's on my phone so I can probably check that at lunchtimes and on the bus.

This type of thing couldn’t really exist if it was possible to forge so a barcode was just an example of something we actually use now. it could be something implanted in you that you chose to activate / deactivate or it could be iris recognition or whatever. It’s interesting either way I think.

In that case they deserve the gold (in my head they are after the gold)
Yes it was the best pub atmosphere I've ever experienced - strange as it was an Aussie bar. I remember I had to bargain with the girlfriend to go there straight away instead of watching on telly in Marylebone.
By the end she didn't want to go and that match has meant she has had not one quib about the early rises for the games.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Glad to be of service to you and your girlfriend, stag.
Any ideas on how to convert a Moldovan bird to a rugby watcher?
She likes football but told me she is not a big fan of rugby. Then I casually mentioned the RWC the other day... talked up NZ (the place) and re-iterated this was the big one... but not in an emotional way. She sort of paused and seemed interested. More work to do... but it will be worth the effort.

MrsP - that's not necessarily true. I've sat through what to football fans would be considered big important games, and were probably very exciting to them, but I've still not been interested at all.

Line, my girlfriend is Polish - nationality and background are no barrier. You just aren't trying hard enough. I used a combination of Ireland v South Africa, Munster v Ospreys, Tag Rugby Summer Leagues and the fact rugby has given me a hobby, mates, a uni thesis, travel opportunities and a job have convinced her its not actually that bad a game
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, I think you're right again Mrs P.
Also, I'll remind her that 'we helped put Russia away' the other day... she'll like that.

Line - thats how my girlfriends father got hooked. He heard Ireland were taking on Russia and immediately assumed Russia would be excellent. This was several months ago. He learnt up on the rules and games so he could appreciate the Russian defeats
MrsP - I'm gonna have to bring her to Ravenhill. She doesn't consider Belfast to be a safe place due to way its portrayed.

You will have to educate her.
Just compare the crime stats for Belfast and Limerick. That might persuade her!

Wow, that's a pretty convincing and thorough programme, Stag!
I don't want her to become a multi-sport tragic like myself... but I need her to understand that some sport is important to me.
The plan so far is to do many different things about town; she loves the outdoors - then slip in the odd game here and there. Don't want to overwhelm her but ease her into the indoctrination process. Might even take her to a T20 match to watch some hit and giggle...
I've been married before - but I was lucky that my ex was sort of interested in rugby/league/cricket and would let me get away with as much as I wanted to watch.

Its been a slow process over last 3 years Line. I think 2 weeks ago in London was the icing on the cake. She's informed me that we are going on the Lions tour in 2013. She also told me today that "I hear Dan Carter is out of the World Cup". I asked "how do you know Dan Carter". She smiled and blushed.

She only knows about 8-9 of the Irish team. I've never watched a New Zealand game with her. It surprised me she'd be aware of their injuries. She thinks Tommy Bowe has a weird face and doesn't look Irish. Tom COurt apparently looks like a "dumb Polish gym monky"
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Ah stag, you're home and hosed mate.
lucky - Tests might be too much - I think start with the shorter stuff... even though I'm not a huge fan of it
(don't worry... I will have summer test series on in the background here and explain our 'religion' to her... ball by ball if necessary)

Wasn't there a national day of mourning in NZ when Carter was taken out of the world cup? Each to their own Staggy....I don't actually fancy Carter personally but I can see why women would find him attractive.
Have you seen Tom Court off the pitch? He looks very smart with his glasses on.

I'll be brave and have a look when I'm home from work later... maybe
Looks like the sore throat I've had for the last 10 days is really making it's presence felt now, I'm losing the ability to speak here. Good croak though!
