The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of pub regulars. We've got the big group pic from the HEC final in Cardiff, plus insets of ll those who couldn't make it
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Thom,
Just because he speaks fluent French, they're worried that for once the Grenouilles will understand the ref

I've just realised that due to dad and work commitments, I will not get to see the final until at least 12 hours after it has finished. I suspect there is absolutely no chance of me avoiding the result, particularly if Wales make it.

Evening all.
Here's an article that should interest the Welsh regs.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/international/wales/8824543/Rugby-World-Cup-Cymru-am-byth-thats-Wales-for-ever...-for-one-day-at-least.html
Mr Rees had a point about 'latent racism'. I do hear what people think are casual 'throw away' insults/banter about the Welsh, and it makes me a tad angry. They would not make such comments about any other country/race.
I normally counter with something like "How many Welsh people do you know?". Or "Have you been to Wales and actually spoken to people?"
They normally look at me in disbelief. And more often than not, if they have been to Wales, come out with the classic "Well it's annoying when you walk in a pub and they all start talking Welsh!"
"Ever considered that they were probably speaking Welsh before you walked in" I always respond. That leaves them confused, but it does make them think.

Bigotry is not a nice quality in a person and in my younger days I'm ashamed to say I also suffered from it.
Mine was based on ignorance but broadening my horizons made me a realise that it was me that needed to change my attitude.

Hound I read that earlier, reckon it's a bit of a two way thing though, some Welsh can be just as guilty as the English in my experience.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Cymro - no worries. I enjoyed reading the article - there's lots of very positive stuff in there.
His observations on the racism thing did strike a chord though. I had one bad experience in Wales, returning from a rock concert at Cardiff Castle in 1977. As we filed down St Mary St to the station plenty of lads were hanging out of the pubs telling us to feic off home. Mind you, that was the year of Phil Bennet's famous 'the English robbed us of everything' speech before the 6N game
We had hitched to Cardiff from Hammersmith that day, and were given a lift by a Welshman right into Cardiff city centre. He was great company and wouldn't take a penny from us. He formed my opinion on the Welsh people that day, not the drunks hurling abuse at us
I had many enjoyable trips to Wales as a youngster, mountain walking, rock climbing etc. and many since for rugby. Penfro & Mrs Penfro's hospitality for my trip to the GWB&C festival in June was very much appreciated.
I hope to make many more trips to Wales; the Heino weekend was awesome - what rugby is about.

The Dutch have a saying I love.
In dit leven, het heeft niets te maken met nationaliteit. Het gaat allemaal over mentaliteit.
In this life, it has nothing to do with nationality. It is all about mentality.
This is what this whole Pub ideal was built on, in the midst of vicious and pointless English/Welsh WUM-fests a few years back... And I love it.

Evening pub
I'm not going to be around much over the weekend, got a rather full diary following the rugby, but I just want to say good luck to our Welsh regs
Like many others, I'll be shouting for your boys at the top of my voice. I know you'll all be on tenterhooks but I really hope you can find a way to enjoy the experience despite the nerves.
Pete, fingers and toes crossed for you!

Just watching Jonathan on S4C, nice build up really for tomorrow. Nerves have just kicked in big time now though. My flat mate and his friends are trying to convince me to go out with them, but I really don't want to be hungover for tomorrow!

Ah feic it, go out and enjoy yerself. You will probably have problems sleeping anyway. I would. Few drinks with mates, may help that. Yer young and able. And the buzz over there must be immense right now.
Enjoy!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Just did my sportsguru predictions. Apologies welsh brothers and sisters and the kiwis on here, but I'm predicting an aussie/French final. No real reason behind it. Wales go in as full favourites, but this French side are the definition of an enigma. My apologies. If it's any consolation I've had a miserable tournament in terms of picking scores so what do I know?
In other news I got laughed at at a bar tonight for buying a west coast cooler. It very nearly kicked off as well when my friends arrived on the scene and began insulting Armagh (the hometown of the gentleman who was dissing me). Most unpleasant. Drink wasn't even for me.
9am start? Can't flipping wait! Hopefully all 4 remaining matches are corkers.

Sat here in my mates study in Auckland, still just under 7 hours to go before kick off and I am a wreck - hands shaking, gut tied in knots, thinking I'll be sick any moment. Will be heading out in a mo, so to all the Welsh regs (and those backing us) in the words of the pubs "Elder Statesman' - BELIEVE !!!

Morning Cari,
it's a right Wales-a-thon on the sports channel here! Fiji game on now.
Some people having a bbq down below... not much noise though, well behaved lot!
I've managed to get my Moldovan friend to come over and watch it with me - a quick tidy up and then a few things from the shops. Hopefully there will be not much traffic on the Bridge.

Can't say I'm sleeping too well, but I was asleep at 9.
On top of the rugby today, I'm also very excited about watching some of Liverpool and Manceinion Unedig and also Nathan Cleverly box tonight in his grudge match.
Off to try for some sleep again. Best of luck Penfro. I bet it's hell waiting for an evening kick off.
