The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing picture of newly retired Gareth 'Alfie' Thomas.
Also a special picture of Thomas Domingo and wishing him all the best on a speedy recovery.
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

The thing is, we are in an area of high unemployment, yet finding staff is an issue for us. There are always jobs out there for half tidy people. That's a Welshism by the way. It means 'well rounded' in this context.

Exactly... good attitude to have.
Off to here now... class starts in 40 mins.
The guy in the middle was junior HW amateur champ in Oz way back... the girl in the black (we call her "Apple") is a fitness machine - brilliant technique. The guy on bottom right reminds me of Manny Pacquiao... crazy. If you get paired up with him.... you're stuffed after 1 minute!

I was wondering what they had in common with Llanelli fans?!Glas a du wrote:They are unique, a regional side which spans two countries. Which one are you LB?
Asbo - a side that once dominated their domestic scene but now hanker after past glories, a sleeping giant who could awaken if they tap into all the resources at their disposal. There are a number of parallels. Last years Biaritz game in Ravenhill was special.

Morning Folks, <tea>
Fair play to you for taking your bad news so well Swanny. I'd be feicin delirious if I was made redundo. Actually the worst thing about it is the word, no company can make a person redundant, they should really change that word, and change "human resources" while they're at it. Gone off topic here...
Glas, sorry to hear about your back mate. Back pain is a nightmare.

Redundancy often unleashes the inner entrepreneur. Capital + necessity = required motivation.
Mick. I'm not fishing for sympathy. I thought I'd empathise with Kenny.
Are you and T coming to the December meet? Kia wants to know how many Leinster fans want Barth tickets.

Ah I know, Kennys really in the wars. I'd be bitching And moaning if I was in his shoes, he's a very patient patient by the sounds of it!
I won't be making the trip to Barf I'm afraid, I can't answer for MickyT but I'd say he's the same. If tickets become a problem though, let me know I might be able to do something from my side

Morning All
Glas - hope the back improves. I think you were having physio anyway weren't you?
Mickado - you're right the word alone can frighten people. That, and "restructuring". One of my colleagues has her last day tomorrow and she's in bits. She really feels like the world is against her at the moment, and she's very angry about it all.

Morning Mick
I can't do anything to change the situation so no point stressing out over it is my view.
I've just been looking through the company handbook to check a few things and lo and behold there's no Redundancy Policy in there. It's a separate document available from HR. Going to have to request a copy of that!
Morning Cari your colleague has my sympathy.

Bore da pawb / good morning all, another drizzly day on the docks!
I have a dilemma. This Friday I've said I'm going to an album launch / gig of a band whose lead singer and guitarist played occasional keyboard for my old band; but last night my sister texted me to say that my nieces' school's PTA are having a pub quiz at the same time. Of the two I think I'd prefer the quiz, but it's a while since I went to a gig and I've already said I'd be there.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
As well as frightening people it’s just a horrible word. “I’ve been made redundant” is an awful thing to be able to say about yourself. No person should ever feel redundant, it’s like saying once the company doesn’t need you you’re worthless. Sometimes I think the language used in business is designed to oppress people, it’s not salary or wages in our place, it’s “compensation” as if you’re being given something for your trouble. Didn’t you mention someone in your place talked about “knowledge harvesting”? that’s an appalling way to describe things…

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Mickado - to be fair to them, the department I work for are not allowed to use the word redundancy. Voluntary redundancy was renamed "Voluntary Early Departure Scheme (VEDs)" and there's no mention of compulsory schemes at the moment.
Oh yeah the knowledge harvesting was me.

I should suggest that my company change the word “redundancy” to “deliriously happy”.
“it’s tough times, and we’ve to make 6 people deliriously happy, I’m sorry…”

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
That's a good way of looking at it, Cari. I might actually be able to do both: the quiz kicks off at eight and there's a support band at the album launch that I wouldn't mind missing. It depends when the main band goes on stage.
I'm not generally in favour of using euphemisms instead of what's actually meant, but 'redundant' is such a harsh word to use for someone who's been laid off. It's equivalent to calling them useless.

When we had our meeting back in February, they didn't say redundancy but mentioned "staff cuts"...I don't suppose there's a good way of saying it really.

Doesn't matter what word you use the feeling of worthlessness is the same. I've been through "the sack", "redundancy", "a company that went bust" and "Voluntary Early Retirement". The Voluntary part was a joke though.
My sisters late husband was made redundant many years ago in Brisbane. They called it "retrenched"!

Rava - a few of my colleagues think the "voluntary" bit is a joke here. Most of them were forced into it really, and they weren't given long to think about it. Like I said, whichever way you say it, it doesn't change the bad feelings.
Anyway...happier things....it's half past week and not long 'til the weekend

Morning all please!! It's Al Murray day
Just realised I'm going into enemy territory for the meet-up....wonder how popular I'd be if I wore my Glaws top?! Maybe a leinster one would be safe and a glos one down Sandy Park?! I shall ponder....
Glas: I know what you mean by your story yesterday, had a big breakthrough with one at the moment.
Swanny: fantastic attitude, you go girl!!

Man up the lot of you. It's the job that's redundant not the person. It's human nature to say "she was made redundant" instead of "she was paid off". It's finding the next job that's the problem not the phraseology.

Still, got a pilates class tonight. Will be my first one since last December so not sure I'm looking forward
