The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing pictures of Shane Williams above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

No. But I did mention Wyn Derrick, the teacher who spotted Shane's talent at 10 years old. The other teachers thought he was too small.

For anyone who didn't see the Leinster game the tries are on the Leinster website;
http://leinsterrugby.ie/mdtv/play/media/id/10109
It's really cool that rugby is broadcast in Irish now. Could not have imagined that fifty years ago! Thats changing the perception of the game, hopefully.

I think I might get some rudimentary Irish lessons in the future; when you are a full-time PG student you do NOT relax by more elective studying. If I get a 9-5 I'll try and do it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The Welsh speaking players have now adopted the terminology of rugby only invented in Welsh in the 70's when Welsh language radio started to cover rugby games and which received a massive boost with S4C in 1984. Those of us brought up with it find it perfectly natural, but older Welsh speakers still view the terms as contrived. Interestingly some of the terms are borrowed from military phraseology largely defunct in modern day Welsh. Limanwr (linesman) literally means flag bearer, scarmes (rucks) means skirmishes. The only words that have been really struggled with is gol which they gave up on and just dropped the e and cais which means to try but is all wrong gramatically.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
So the Welsh rugby term for 'try' actually means 'to try'? As in- the concept of effort?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yes. Crap isn't it. The English phrase came from "try for goal" that is, if you got the ball over the line it gave you a free kick for goal. It was only later the try itself was considered the pinnacle of achievement and awarded with points in it's own right. Until then you only got the points if you could kick the conversion.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, I had heard that before alright. And it makes sense.
It's a strange example of a word in one language suffering from being a direct translation from another. Just use the Welsh word for score and be done with it. Though 'Essai' is also a direct translation of try I suppose?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
There's no Welsh word for score
That's why the soccer program is called "Scorio"
The problem is in Welsh you'd say 'go for goal' rather than 'trying for goal'
Some Rugby schoolboy thnking he was funny by coming up with an ungrammatical term on purpose, I don't know...

Notch, Irish is a very difficult language to pick up if you don't start from a young age. TG4 used to show Celtic League until Setanta bought the rights but it's a lot more porfessional now. Their HC coverage is great ,the length of time they show it for is marvellous.

Great night with the Dublin lads, Gibbo and Stag. Some great laughs. Poor Mickado, he won't want anyone mentioning Mars Bars for a long time.
I do fear for Gibbo next weekend. Not sure he has the stamina for a three nighter
Morning all, fancy dress in the village to raise money for local projects - I've never known a small village (<1,000) get so into it - bliwdy hilarious costumes.

Is that the one where an atheist is taking the council on for saying prayers before meetings as it offends his human rights? I mean it's not as if they forced him to be a councilor or make him recite them naked at gunpoint. Ffs!

Unlucky for Howeltt if it's true, and a big blow for Munster, he's been your best player by far this season.

Afternoon all. Lunch sounds nice Mick.
I've just finished watching the Wales v Australia game, off out Xmas shopping shortly. Nice to see Shane end on a try.
RiskySports and I went to the Help for Heroes match at Twickenham yesterday, a great atmostphere and an entertaining match with the Southern Hem beating the North 45-31.

Thomond - from an outsider looking in, Howlett has been key for you. I know O'Mahoney has been playing very well, but Howlett is a class above.
Kiwi - it looked a fab match, from the 2nd half I saw anyway. Peter Edwards looked like he was loving playing out there!

Has to be said Ashton very lucky boy and Tuilagi very unlucky. Also feel sorry for the ball boy who gets caught in the middle of it all. Bound to be a few more citings from that surely.

Chris Ashton- what was he at? Silly.
Surprised to see Murphy in there throwing haymakers! And there was Lawes and Wood throwing more punches than Tuilagi too. And I get the impression Ashton would be lucky Tuilagi was pulled away in the first place! What a palaver.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Who's Peter O Mahoney? Never heard of him. Is he from Cork? Ah ok, that explains it. A ligind in his own village.
Howlett is far and away Munster' s most crucial backs player. He gives them an x-factor when the chips are down. Lose him and they lose any semblence of an attacking option. Looks like the old up-de-jumper, pick and drive next week and leave it to ROG to kick to the corners.
I think this gives Scarlets the edge at PYS...

Out collecting for charity tonight and twice a week until Christmas. We are lucky enough to have persuaded Santa to come on our float as we go around. There's loudspeakers on the float blaring out Christmas songs. By the 23rd of December every year I could throttle Pariah Carey, Elton Pong and that blydi brass band! When the shops start playing those songs on haloween night I feel like vomiting.
Oh well, it's all in a good cause.

Just looked at that Tigers v Saints clip, can't see that Tuilagi even threw a punch, let alone several! Ashton is a man sausage.

Wasn't there a similar incident in American Football recently where a player was tackled by his hair and it was not illegal?
I am not defending Ashton by the way, just remembering the incident.
I reckon Murphy at least will have questions to answer.
