The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing pictures of Shane Williams above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Morning all,
Mick, I suspect flip flops and t-shirts are off the agenda. I liked Hughie's "It's Baltic" comment on Faceache this morning - especially as immediately below it a Kiwi mate had posted a pic with the caption "bucket list #56, riding a skiddoo in Antartica". It looked like a nice sunny day at Scott Base too.

It's going to be cold, Chef. I've only seen a forcast to Saturday and there isn't meant to be too much rain around, but that's no guarantee at all.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Interesting little piece
Leinster coach wary of Bath's All Black World Cup hero
LEINSTER coach Joe Schmidt has warned his players about the dangers New
Zealand World Cup hero Stephen Donald will pose in the first of the
province's back-to-back Heineken Cup matches against Bath at The Recreation
Ground next Sunday.
"We certainly won't want to give Stephen too many opportunities. It would
certainly be a worry to me if we were indisciplined and he is stepping up to
the tee," issued Schmidt.
"He is a very good goal-kicker. He hits the ball like Fergus McFadden
where there is a slight fade to it. I coached him a bit for the New Zealand
Schoolboys. He played both 15 and 10 back then."
Fishing
The forgotten man of New Zealand rugby was said to be engaged in a spot of
fishing when the call came from Graham Henry to provide back-up for Aaron
Cruden in the World Cup final.
Ultimately, the former Waikato Chief applied the 'coup de grace' with a
sure-footed penalty that eventually gave the All Blacks the breathing space
to keep France at arm's length.
This one act of nerve redeemed all the inconsistencies he had shown through a
23-cap All Black career that always sided more on the downs than the ups.
Donald was absent from Bath's 16-13 home defeat by Sale Sharks on Saturday,
Director of Rugby Ian McGeechan insisting he nurse a minor hip injury in
order to be ready for Leinster. Donald does bring an unusual physicality to
the fly-half position, at 15-and-a-half stone in weight, and a relish for
playing the game on the gain line where the prospect of heavy human traffic
has never worried him.
"He loves flat line running. What he does is take a very flat ball from
the half-back and hits a very direct line. This is unexpected from a 10. He
carries like a 12," added Schmidt. "He is a very threatening ball
carrier with high speed and a very good defender in the tackle. He directs
the game very well. It is a pretty good all-round package."
All of these attributes could well describe Leinster's own Jonathan Sexton in
what could be the game defining clash before Bath come to the Aviva Stadium
on Saturday week.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Are there many young players that you see capable of emulating Stephen Jones, Brian O'Driscoll, Jason Leonard, Chris Patterson, Fabien Pelous etc and amassing about 110-120 caps?

James O'Connor was mentioned on Saturday as having 20 odd caps already and he's still 20, is that right? If so you could see him surpassing all those players for caps, especially as he is so versatile.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I was going to answer 'yes' to that question, but the fact there are more Test matches played per year could also shorten a player's career, just down to the physicality of the game and less time off.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yea O'Connor is a good shout. He has nearly 30 caps (can't remember exact amount but its over 25 caps) and is 21 years old.
George North is probably another. He has 16 caps and is still a teenager.
I don't see any Irish player as being capable of it. Maybe Cian Healy.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
RIGHT:
I have:
8 Terrace tickets for the Terracers - Me, Huggy, Aonghus, Asbo, Chef, Gibbo, Lucky andPuma Kiwi (Dreamer will be with us, but has a season ticket)
2 North Stand (isn't it amazing, he's played more games for Wales than the Scarlets and they've named a stand after him makes you kind of emotional - he's only 19!) Tickets for Pendro and Mrs Penfro
2 North Stand Tickets for Kia - although Stag wants to swap these for his South Stand tickets so he can join us in the North Stand Bar.
Dreamer has:
Puma's terrace ticket and the other Stand tickets for Pendro's parents etc.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
- you cant get into a stand unless you have a ticket for that stand.
- the Barn will be a no go because it only holds 2,000 and they will be in there by 1 o'clock.
- there are bars in the individual stands.
therefore I suggest:
1 - we all meet by Ray Gravell's statue for Dreamer and me to dole out Tickets (no DSS jokes please Stag) at roughly2p.m. 2.30pm If I'm not there my mobile number is in the list in the FB pub.
2 - Those of us in the North Stand (including the Terracers) then go for pints in the North Stand Bar - they have Sky so we could catch the end of whatever early game is being shown (hopefully Connacht, but probably Castres v Northampton, this is where I watched Ulster dispatch Biaritz in the spring )
3 - The South Stand lot go for pints in the South Stand Bar
After the match, CHEF needs to get to Cardiff by 7 to pick up Status Quo tickets. We can have a swift one in the Barn, then I'll take him to CARDIFF WEST SERVICES to meet PROP. I'll need to leave at 5.35-5.40 so that gives us a half hour after the match for the main lot of traffic to clear. PROP - I'll be in Cardiff West 6.30-6.45. If somebody wants to keep CHEF company, I'll have room for another 3.
I'm PMing this to everybody involved, but it will be easier to discuss any amendments in here than get involved in a PM storm

There are different ticketing options, lucky - its cheaper to specify a particular train, less cheap to get the flexibility

Chop Chop, resident train man approaching.
If you book at ticket with a specific time printed on the ticket you have to get that train. No flexibility allowed

That's fine for me Glas!!
I'll have 3 extra spaces for anyone who wants to join and you can keep the bags in my car during the gig etc!!
It takes me 30mins to get from Cambrian's clubhouse to Cardiff West so 6.30 would work as it's about 10-15mins to town from there!!

Morning (just about) all,
Saw a cracking stat from Harpin’ On Rugby over the weekend. Apparently this is the first year ever that in the back to back games in the HC pool the teams from 1st and 2nd in every pool will play eachother.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
GLAS – brilliant plan One small amendment may be required.
I think we (myself & herself are getting the 10:54, arrive Llanelli 12noon to meet my Mam & Dad) will have to meet some of the others a wee bit later than 14:00 as I believe they are on the train that will come through Cardiff (Dreamer & Stag will meet them on the train) and depart Cardiff Central at 12:48, not arriving in Llanelli until 14:07
MICK – Trains from Llanelli to Cardiff
17:32 – arrive 18:46 (direct)
17:41 – arrive 19:22 (change Swansea)
18:35 – arrive 19:57 (direct)
19:00 – arrive 20:23 (change Swansea)
Earliest I can see the match finishing is 17:15 so those tyaking the train will be hard pushed to make those first 2
LUCKY – we’ll be in the CITY ARMS from 16:15ish

Ooh Mikado, touchy! That's almost Ulster touchy
Sorry, your post was interesting, I like it when sport throws that sort of thing up. It also means there is almost inevitably going to be shake ups in every group, which can't be bad.
It's just you see, well I know I shouldn't because you can't make it and all, but I am starting to get excited about the meet and that's put me in a funny mood...

No pal, not touchy at all. just throwing a bit of banter back your way.
I would be giddy too if I was you. Should be a class session. We had a great night last week in at the Leinster game, the last thing I remember in the pub was getting a €60 round in.

No, I’ll never be able to erase it. in fact I arrived into work today (was off yesterday and 2 of the lads from here joined us in the pub) to find a Mars bar sitting on my desk.
It was mortifying. But it was funny. I will say that MickyT has a practical joke coming his way that will make a Black Mamba in his tuba case look like a whoopi cushion on his chair.

Yep - was thinking of heading to the ground around 6:30, to get there for 7 (have some stuff to pick up)luckless_pedestrian wrote:Penfro, I won't be home from work 'til around four so I'm unlikely to be able to get to the City Arms before half five, maybe on the way to six - you'll still be there then, won't you?

MMC will take some beating, the man's a genius. Are you sure your up to it? Do you need a hit of glucose in your system?
(for anybody under 30 Mars used to do adverts bragging about how much glucose was in every bar - A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play )

Isn't Mr Earls on 26 caps? And he's 24? Surely has a shot at reaching the ton?

I'd be surprised if Earls can keep ahead of the competition that long.

GLAS: Terracing tickets, I didn't know you'd got one for Puma! I've bought one for Puma. So if we both have, that means we have one terracing ticket spare, if anyone (Stag if he can't swap to the north stand?) wants it.
ASBO: Please can you let me know exactly what time train (and where from) you guys are getting to Llanelli on Sat so I can double check I've worked out the right time train to get from Cardiff to meet you guys.
AFTER THE MATCH: For those not going in the car with Chef and Glas, I would recommend getting the 18:35, because what with the traffic, it's going to be near impossible to get any earlier ones. I will see if I can book taxi's to pick us up from the stadium at about 18:15 to make sure we definitely get that train. For those of you going to the gig, that means you'll miss about the first hour.
