Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
First topic message reminder :
Can't see anything wrong with oil companies. Like every other business they are out to make money, but somehow it is frowned upon to make more than anyone else.
It is not the fault of the oil companies if there is future harm to the environment, as if there wasn't a demand or the product they wouldn't be continuing to invest in finding it. (if there even is an issue with the environment)
Oil companies probably put more money into alternatives than anyone else. Statoil in particular.
As for climate change, there is no doubt it is occurring, however considering the age of the earth is measured in billions of years and we are only able to go back as far as the last ice age (10-15000 years) to measure climate trends. I'm yet to be convinced of man's actual contribution. The number one greenhouse gas is not C02, CH4 or any other by product of our use, but infact naturally occuring water vapour, which our burning of fossil fuels barely make a dent in. Of course it's all about tolerances and thresholds, but with the likes of India, China and America being the worlds biggest polluters, I'm not going to feel guilty about European energy consumption. It seems very convenient that as people are reliant on fossil fuel then it is easy to tax it by both increasing it's price and the guilt associated with using it.
Anyway, all these lentil knitters who go on about the "evil" of oil have never ever given a viable alternative.
Personally I think Nuclear power is the way forward, but the uneducated hippies will never allow it.

I am busy making some work benches for a greenhouse.
I do some voluntary work teaching primary school kids gardening.
I picked up my old set square and realised that I had made it at school as a 12 year old.
Anyone else still got something they made at school.

Some pottery, a machine vice and some metalwork bits and pieces.
Edit: Also, a mixed brass/aluminium chess set. Still use it from time to time.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Actually a month or so back I went to visit my parents who asked me to sort through my "crap" that was filling their garage. Was quite interesting to find old school books and the like. It is weird when looking at old textbooks how stuff that seemed so advanced is now looks like a piece of cake. It is odd how much perceptions change.
Also found a whole lot of golf related stuff like scorecards I had kept of good rounds or from "big name" courses. Also found balls I had kept and marked with the name and date of bigger comps I had won.
Anyone else ever found old golf related junk that was a nice view into their past?
PS Doon, great work on the benches. What do you grow in the green houses?

David Cameron accuses people who are considering striking during the Olympics 'unpatriotic', yet the argument to get rid of the 50p is that it is/will forcing entrepreneurs out of the country. Surely moving out of Britain is just as unpatriotic Dave?

Barca have been miles ahead of Utd since Guardiola took over. I would say only Rooney and a slightly younger Scholes would get anywhere near the Barca bench! Man for Man thers not a player I'd swap for a Utd player! Mind you I'd swap my teams whole squad for a pack of top trumps were so poor!

Onion weed is very hard to get rid of.
If it is in a lawn mow frequently and scarify with a spring rake.
Otherwise dig out the bulbs, they are like snowdrops or spray out with roundup [watch out for the kids/pets if you do this.]
Mac.
We have a vegetable patch and flower garden.
Also have a willow maze/feature which the kids love, a summerhouse and a greenhouse. Plans for a small wild flower/hay garden
We tend to grow things that the kids relate to like beans, sunflowers, strawberries, tomatoes, cues, tatties, kale etc.
I try to cross teach with things like marking out [maths], weather, science etc [thankfully not spelling!]
We worked out the other day that we could grow £500 worth of lettuces from one packet of seeds.
Ours is an Eco garden and we had great fun this week installing a wormery.

Ok, so there seems to be a lot of debate going on today regarding whether or not Messi is the best player ever. For me it seems obvious that he is, but some people are questioning this based on his lack of a world cup medal and general "lower" performance levels for Argentina. Given the lower level of top international football when compared to the champions league this seems an odd argument to make. He has played a few poor games at a lower level so is no longer great???
Anyway, what do the folks of 606v2 golf think?

vidic, ferdiand evra would all stroll into the barca team in my opinion.
the one big weakness in the barca squad is the lack of depth.... they have been very lucky with injuries in the last couple of years though.
if mascherano was at Barca what choice centre half would he be? i reckon 6th or 7th yet he is first choice at the moment in the barca team

Ferdinand certainly wouldn't stroll, perhaps he'd use a carthorse gait. Well over the hill, even Ferguson concedes that.

Cheers Doon, yes is in the lawn as well which is really annoying. Will just keep ploughing away.
Messi is right up there no doubt but it's hard to compare really. Ronaldo is doing amazing things for a weaker side after all.
Certainly Viduc is a better player than Puyol for me, at least over the past 4 years. Ferdinand at his best as well but as Super days that is gone but he's as good as Puyol is now.

Mac. Messi is an exceptional player no doubt. I'm not sure how you compare him to the oldies. I saw Maradona take a cr*p Argentina team to the World Cup final almost single-handedly (they lost to Germany) and take Napoli (Napoli I ask you?) to more than one Scudetto; he was awesome at his peak. Messi plays in a team with many other excellent players who help him to shine.
I'll reserve judgement for a bit although he was ridiculously good last night. If he was a central component of a great Argentine team I'd be more willing to entertain the idea as maybe being the best ever. Lets wait until his career is coming to an end maybe?

He'd be more of a tadpole than a seal. I hope history remembers this Varca team as having 3 truly great players.
It's also with noting that Spain, which is more or less Barca less Messi, are still a great side.

Mac I generally do play at the Muni's. Eight courses for £290, you would be a fool not to.
I played at Dundonald last year, they usually have an offer each spring.
We are paying £35 a round so good value.
It is a very good course, too tough for me in my dotage but it is good to test yourself occasionally. I think I broke 90 last year with a couple of lost balls. That was off the yellows. I would not enjoy it off the whites.
They have money troubles. I think they are still attatched to the Loch Lomond club.
The greens were very good and the layout/design was superb.
It has the huge paperworks factory next door which spoils it a bit and there are surrounding areas that look to be 'unfinished'. A bit like Kissocks, you would expext that after 10 years it would be better

Super I'd say its years of having their faces battered and ears pulled in scrums! Either that or most simply fell from the ugly tree!
Mac have you watched rugby lately, mid 90's I'd have agreed and said the majority of rugby players were overweight blokes with beer bellys. But since the games gone pro the training has gone into overdrive and most are now hugely muscular and in superb shape.
More importantly Rovers are out of the bottom 3. Oh and a plus side 'Arrys boys got beat, further proving he is not the right man for England

You won't convince Mac on this one Fader. For some reason he can't see the nose in front of his face on this one. As for 'Arry's boys, why does that prove he isn't the man for England? England will lose whomever is in charge but at least someone like Redknapp has a track record of getting a team to be more than the sum of it's parts on a weak budget. The typical England manager is someone who has no clue and comes form a background of, generally, being able to buy what they want when the next transfer window comes around. We've been the 'big name' route many times with the same result, therefore it's the players. We may as well try 'Arry, Moyes, Allardyce (I'd rather not this last one) or someone similar as we won't be able to persuade Ferguson.Fader wrote:Super I'd say its years of having their faces battered and ears pulled in scrums! Would be nice to think you could get money back but somehow I doubt it. Scrums are officiated by refs who've never played there and they penalise things which defy actual physics. Shirts are too tight (don't laugh) which means the opposing props all too often fail to get a bind on the stupid 'engage' call and the scrum goes down. I'd be willing to bet that the locks can't do what their name suggests with modern shirts either i.e. lock the scrum.Doon the Water wrote:Scrums are killing the game

The other thing they have to stop...now...is this ridiculous ruck situation where the ball's at the rear foot, the scrum-half spends 30 seconds getting the fat lads where he wants them before picking the ball up and all that time the opposition forwards either won't compete (and therefore clog the space for the backs) or aren't allowed to compete by the refs.

"For some reason he can't see the nose in front of his face on this one"
Please explain this, what am I missing?
Most of the players cant even master the simple art of catching a ball. I played a fair bit of rugby all the way through school and can say I dropped the ball no more than once every ten games. The scottish team in particular seem to be no more than an unskilled bunch of gym obsessed plonkers.
When I watch sport I want to see people do things I could never dream of doing using skills that are mind boggling. Watching rugby you see nothing remotely out of this world.

Guys a recommendation -I went to watch basketball saturday night leicester v Guildford.First time and only £12 for me and miss dyna
Very impressed with the skill and fitness levels.incredible speed pretty physical and will definitely be going again.Really close to the action and sat a couple of rows behind the oppostion bench which was revealing. They had 3 referees and only 10 players on the court.
Rugby need to sort a few areas for sure out but still a spectacle

Not snide. Dismissive, definitely.McLaren wrote:Instead of making snide remarks navy why not try to explain what it is that I am missing? Maybe next time I can marvel at the wonders of the game after your education of me.
For one thing, this is clearly a ridiculous remark....unless you're referring to an Old Beerswillingians XV who play down the local park on a Sunday.McLaren wrote:Not sure super, but some of them are fat and clearly out of shape.
As for marvels, how about Tom Croft's afterburner between Rougerie and another French player, body swerve round the fullback and touch down yesterday? Sorry Mac, but if you don't 'get' the game and can't think of anything sensible to say, probably best not to say anything at all.

Far be for it for me to defend mac but I think what he was hamfistedly trying to say was that Rugby has more emphasis on strength than on pure skill and talent. That's not to say that rugby is without skill but that it makes up less of the participant than in many other sports.

Thanks super, that is definitely along the lines I was heading, although not sure there is as much skill as you hint to.
Navy, you highlight something of great skill but it is no more than someone catching a ball and running into space. Where is the great wonderment of how anyone could achieve that?
If you like that sort of thing then watch Hernandez off the ball, the way he runs into space is quite marvellous, and he can do it almost every coupe of minutes or so. A great show of fitness and vision. I wonder if this Tom Croft fellow can make this runs as often?

Mac, I'm not sure I'd consider footballer to be that skillful either while in the general sporting context they are pretty poor athletes too.
