First topic message reminder :
Can't see anything wrong with oil companies. Like every other business they are out to make money, but somehow it is frowned upon to make more than anyone else.
It is not the fault of the oil companies if there is future harm to the environment, as if there wasn't a demand or the product they wouldn't be continuing to invest in finding it. (if there even is an issue with the environment)
Oil companies probably put more money into alternatives than anyone else. Statoil in particular.
As for climate change, there is no doubt it is occurring, however considering the age of the earth is measured in billions of years and we are only able to go back as far as the last ice age (10-15000 years) to measure climate trends. I'm yet to be convinced of man's actual contribution. The number one greenhouse gas is not C02, CH4 or any other by product of our use, but infact naturally occuring water vapour, which our burning of fossil fuels barely make a dent in. Of course it's all about tolerances and thresholds, but with the likes of India, China and America being the worlds biggest polluters, I'm not going to feel guilty about European energy consumption. It seems very convenient that as people are reliant on fossil fuel then it is easy to tax it by both increasing it's price and the guilt associated with using it.
Anyway, all these lentil knitters who go on about the "evil" of oil have never ever given a viable alternative.
Personally I think Nuclear power is the way forward, but the uneducated hippies will never allow it.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Diggers: live race coverage begins at 5:55am. There is a build up show beforehand if your little one has a real early morning.
Interesting the types that are into F1 and I'd say even though I'm extremely sporty the rest I know who are avid followers are definitely of the less sporty variety. My brother for years a good football but stopped playing put on some lard and is now most unsporty is a complete petrol head.
I've loved it since I was young as my father was hugely into racing and used to take us to the british grand prix. Also have a good friend that I've known since school that works for Force India so am hoping for some pit lane passes to the British this year if he can wangle it, even if he can't will try to get up there anyway.
As for the ladies, so many are hugely into the racing because of the testosterone, you get some serious track bunnies and I live quite near (20mins) to brands hatch so often get up there for touring cars and superbike events. Also try if I can to get a track day once in a blue moon, but to do this I wouldn't suggest taking your own everyday car, you need something that you can thrash to an inch of its life.
So as Diggers says it is a real petrol head thing, my local pub have an F1 club and they show every race live not matter what time its on, they also put on food from the country that the race is in that week to help give local feel and the atmosphere in there for the races is far more lively and good for banter than any live football they show.

Spot on Fader. Prefer bikes myself though, had them since I was a kid and been to a few races and prefer it to the cars. I've been to a couple of grand prix and it didn't float my boat , a very long day as well as you get there so early for seats.
My Dad was 70 last year and I bought tickets for us to have the weekend at the moto GP in June. Looking forward to that.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Its a tough call for me F1 shades it, though I love my bikes, like you I was brought up around them and fast cars too. Personal favourite was when my dad had an old school Lotus Esprit that was lovely, bloody temperamental though. We grew up with our own bikes more through my dad obsession of passing something onto us, did some MotoX as a kid but a broken wrist too many plus time under guys for growth hormones put paid to that. So that was when I got into Brazilian Jiu jitsu and taekwondo hence the MMA love.
If your a bike lover and you can I highly recommend the Isle of Man TT, been going to that since I was 18 so this year would be my 14th straight year its an amazing experience especially when you ride the race route yourself which is odd because its acutally the reversre direction to what the traffic usually flows! My mates and I have been making the journey on our own bikes every year and will be the last time I take my TL1000S on the journey, as I'm hoping to change bikes this year to what though I have no idea.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I was into trials bikes myself fader. Not really into the massive road bikes, I never feel that safe to be honest. Had a few prangs and lost a cousin in a bike accident. Its a dangerous past time mainly due to unattentive car drivers. Current bike is an old Vespa that I love. Ideal for station runs and just cruising around especially as I live near Brighton.
That said I quite fancy a Ducati monster as a bit of a toy, can't see Mrs Digs allowing it though.

I love all forms of speed, big bikes, off road bikes, fast cars though can't stand quad bikes, if I want 4 wheels I'd use a car!
Vespa aye, good old classic looking machine. My dad still has his Lambretta from the 60's that he used to bomb about on with my mum on the bac'! Its a thing of beauty high polished jet black with complete chrome trim, half a dozen mirrors and a red leather seat all he needs is a parker and a beret then I'd call him wolfie. Won't let me near it though!
Ducatti Monster is a nice bike, something I'd consider myself.
Lorus its not how big your beast is but the way you handle it! So I'm told! Or maybe I'm just over compensating with mine!

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
There's something in the small print of the Budget Red Book that suggests the tax burden on visiting foreign superstar sportspeople will be alleviated a bit. The statement on the face of it doesn't change the principle though that these guys are subject to UK tax on a proportion of endorsement income, even if the contract or counterparty has nothing to do with the UK (this is the specific reason why for instance Usain Bolt and Sergio Garcia have refused to compete here for certain events, and is the suspected reason why Federer has never come to Queen's / Nadal has chosen not to going forward). And don't get me started on the F1 lot.
2.60 Taxation of non-resident sports people – HMRC will revise its practice on the taxation of non-resident sports people to take training days into account when calculating the proportion of worldwide endorsement income subject to UK tax.

How, for example, do HMRC get a penny from someone like tiger who comes to the UK for four days in July?

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I'm not an expert in this area (MustPuttBetter and Mercurio would be better placed to comment if they were still on here), but my understanding is that Tiger would have to file a UK tax return - it would at least cover his winnings (although I think most or all UK tax is deducted at source for this?) and then a proportion of his endorsement income based on some ratio of UK "endorsement duties" (playing days or whatever) over total worldwide. Indeed, it was rumoured before the 2010 Ryder Cup that he might have a UK tax bill of c.$1m and yet have no winnings from the event (hence he'd pay a lot out of his own pocket just to participate).
If you're asking how it's enforced / policed, I have no idea. It certainly can't be deducted at source if for instance Nike Inc. pays from their US bank account to Tiger's US bank account.

One interesting phenomenon has been the perceived rise of the "Honda" tournament, traditionally the lowest ranking of the Florida Swing.
Now the US media is hailing its renaissance but, apart from Woods and Bradley, all the top names appearing were European Tour members, Americans still staying away in droves!!

Our village pub reopens tonight after being closed for five years.
New owners have spent a fortune, work has been going on for over a year.
Where I live it is very rural with three small villages within 3 miles of each other. Three years ago all three pubs were closed now they have all been re-opened after substancial investment.

Pub at the end of my road had just closed and Tescos have bought the site. The residents are up in arms about it but of course never actually used the pub.
As a newbie I wasnt too popular at the residents meeting by saying Id rather have a Tesco Metro local than a derelict pub. It was a rubbish pub anyway and there are about 10 others to choose from.

There is something about a really good rural pub you just can’t beat, especially if they serve local beer and food. Do you think you will frequent your local often now that it has reopened?
Speaking of the rural pub, who prefers to live in a city and who prefers the rural lifestyle?
Navy
Work network seems to have issues with the v2 PM system but fear not a reply will be on its way sometime soon.

I think im quite lucky. I work in Soho in London so very cosmopolitan and I live on the very edge of Brighton which is a cool place but the actual area is like a little harbour port with a very villlagey feel and I can walk to the south downs in 10 minutes from my home.
Only downer is the commute really but its a goode chance to catch up with some sleep.

I always think I would not like to move back to the countryside. I then remember I am extremely anti social and that my dream home would be miles from any other life where I could live in total isolation. Well other than a connection to v2 of course.
There would also have to be a golf course within easy reach.
Actually one reason, and this may be sad, that I have not moved to London is the thought of having to give up golf or cough up a shed load to join a club which is a 1 hour fight through the traffic away.

Super, you have got it all wrong mate. Nobody dies regretting that they had too much sex. Its all very well looking for Miss Perfect but there is nothing wrong with having some fun in the meantime.
In my reasonably extensive experience you often find that sex with an average looking girl is a lot more fun than with a really attractive one. In fact spending time with an average girl is often a lot more fun than being with some girl who really rates herself.
Scotland is obviously not a country blessed with an inordinate amount of attractive ladies so just make the best of a bad bunch......or move to Prague which is full of babes. You are only young(ish) once.

I am sure Scotland has the same proportion of girls with the DNA to be attractive as any other nation in northern europe. I will admit a few more my be spoiled by chip consumption than the other nations witht the same gene history.
I have a theory that almost all girls from sizes 6 to about 14 look pretty good naked. once you are in the moment the face is hardly the main concern.

'I wish they all could be Caledonia girls'
Mac.
Will probably eat there once a fortnight, and visit socially. The village has a good community spirit and if the new owners embrace that I am sure they will do well.
They have made a great job of renovating what was a disfunctional building.
England do country pubs much better than Scotland. Up here you have to hunt around for a good one our locals are OK with lots of farmers, dogs and 'women who lunch', a good social mix. Quite good fun eating your steak with half a dozen working dogs eyeing every mouthful.
We once had a charity sheep shearing competition in one of our pubs. A couple of Ossie boys challenged the local lads.
Fantastic night with lots of money changing hands. One of the local lads won.
Bet they don't do that in Thames Ditton.
I lived in the SE London subarbs for 10 years. Very glad to get out of that area. Would not go back for all the tea in China.

Is Blackheath/Greenwich not considered SE London? Seems pretty nice there.

Blackheath is a bit of an oasis in a desert, its fine during the day but if you go there on an evening its full of kids wandering around the common and the streets. Anywhere that close to Lewisham is to be avoided. Greenwich is OK.
Id stick south west and north personally though.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Lived in south east london for alot of my life.
Much better than parts of north london- There are loads of good and bad pockets.
Beckenham is nice, bromley is ok, blackheath, greenwich, bexley, parts of croydon are lovely(yes really), chilslehurst,Then you get the horrid parts like as you do all over london. I work all over london and have lived inb many parts and the grass isnt really greener. However On the whole west london is by far the poshest part of london and not really like north london which for my money is no different from east, south east or south london

Id have to say here are a lot less larger parts of utter grot in the rest of London but I guess its a matter of personal opinion. Its the area Id least want to live in thats for sure.
To be honest living in London IMO is massively over rated, Im happy to work there but would never want to live there again. As you say every nice place is next to some pikey estate anyway, you are never far away from a chav in London.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
The main problem with south east london is of course the lack of tubes!
Which means the places near top mainline stations are over priced but are at the same time half decent.
Look at greenwich and then deptford next to it!
look at beckenham and then catford next to it!
location location location is what its all about- Certain places have bad reps, however most of the time its unfair.
However I am out of london now(well just inside m25) and wont go closer, but i have no problem with where i lived at all, and trust me the rest of london is just as bad as south east london. If someone mentioned south london then i amy agree- that place is really bad, but then where do we draw this imaginary line!!

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I dont think the bad reps are remoitely unfair, Ive lived in London for 20 years and most of the places that have a bad rep fully deserve it. I wouldnt want my worst enemey to live in Deptford or Catford. My wife has a flat in Hither Green that we rent out that we used to live in, it depresses me every time I have to get the train from Waterloo East to get to it.
So Im basing my opinion on the fact Ive lived in north, south west and north east London and Im afraid for me south east is by far the worst and Im northern so its not like Ive got any reason to be pro one part or another, its just my take from living around the place.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
My point was bad repping a whole area- like croydon(even though it has some of the richest postcodes in the country within its borough) or SE london on the whole.
I will give you an example, I meet a girl who lived in colliers wood(west)- she told me she lived in wimbledon - lol(colliers wood is not a nice place). I meet another girll on another night who said she lived in croydon- yet lived in a beautifull part in a mansion!!
If you think catford or deptford are bad- id agree however you need to gauge the bad parts in west london or north london with them- and trust me there are much worse even in those areas!!

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I get your point but its about having an overall feel for an area. I can drive through north London and IMO go through quite a lot of nice places and parks, of course there are a lot of not so nice places.
I drive through south east London and I dont really feel that, its much more downbeat taking the whole area into consideration. Like I say I do know all these places well so its based on experience, other people might feel differently but I dont.
Re Croydon, another place I know well, Id say it was effectively a town in its own right. The places that are half decent in Croydon (like say Selsdon)are actually as far as im concerned in Surrey and a decent drive to Croydon centre which is a god awful place, whereas you can walk from Colliers Wood to Wimbledon Village. And Colliers Wood has Merton Abbey Mills which is actually a really nice little riverside area.
Thats said Ive nothing against Croydon as for some reason Ive pulled a large percentage of girls from there, quite what that says about the area Im not sure mind you.
