The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the picture of David Sisi, Jannie de Beer and Glen Webbe above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Can Nick Evans take that DG he missed v Leinster back in 2009? It would make up for missing that one.

Flipping thunderstorms yer mun and big ones at that. Place is miserable enough at the best of times without having to worry about the old tent flooding.
Got to watch a bit of the Scarlets first half today. First rugby I've watched in a month or so

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
OK, so (Munster fan in peace here) Ulster win by playing out of their skins last night;
Munster win today playing godawfully;
Connacht lose against Toulouse who (according to reports on here) did not play well;
Leinster have to go to Firhill tomorrow where they don't always do so well.
Some comments:
I asked earlier if Ulster could reproduce this form? The simple answer is Yes, they could, but will they? Has there been an over-emphasis on the Tigers game at Ravenhill? I would worry about this if I were an Ulster fan. But ... they did play some really good rugby; they stopped Tigers playing any; they have some intelligent players who used their intelligence; moment of the match for me was Trimble fixing Tuilaga to getin for his second try; you can't coach that. Surprising fact of the night was the way Tigers gave up; some on here have said it was when Twelvetrees missed the penalty; regardless of when it happened it was a sight to behold and if Notch bores his grandchildren about this game, he should include that aspect because I do not think we will see that happening very often.
Munster - what to say?
They were dreadful today; not dreadful in the old up-the-jumper Munster way; just dreadful; losing line-outs; missing passes; but ...
They won; they have won 5 from 5 in a year when the know-it-alls on Sky said they were "as aging team". One thing this new Munster team is learning is how to win even when you are not playing well; that is a torch being passed on by the old heads in the squad - POC, ROG and so on; much was made of Tigers injury list before last night, but at the moment, Munster's is horrendous; how many back-rowers have they fit now after Ronan's exit? Positives? Steven Archer came on towards the end and won a penalty in his first scrum; TOL came on and the service was not of the step step think variety of old; Peter O'Mahony had a good game; Donncha Ryan played very well (MOTM);
Connacht well, I just feel sorry for them; I really wish the IRFU would give them something, just a little something.
Am I right in thinking that if an Irish province dual-qualified for the HC by (1) position in the Pro-12 and (2) winning either the HEC or the Amlin then the fourth placed Irish proviince in the Pro-12 would get that HEC place? If so then Connacht's place in the HEC this year may not be a once in a lifetime opportunity and the IRFU have got to help Connacht so that they are not automatic whipping boys in their pool.

Hoi Rev good to hear from you mate.
Really pleased for Quins. Love what O'Shea has done there so would love to see them in the knockouts. Even though it might affect our prospects.
I have to say this. Before the HC started not many in here and elsewhere would have put 50p on Ulster being in with a chance of a QF going into the last round. That's understandable given the quality of the opposition. You will understand my frustration then when I see people writing this was a poor Leicester team or you had a given 10 points. I know most have been magnanimous in their praise but I have believed in this squad since the start of last season. If we don't qualify I'll be gutted - nay devastated, but I will continue to believe we are getting there and will be talked about as a contender in the future.
Rant over. Tanks for listening

You did say all that Rav, in fairness to ya bud. If not this year,(I still believe they can on 19 pts) then Ulster will be fancied for the HC knockouts in the coming years. For sure.
The pain has to be felt in it, to win it or make the SF's Finals. It has always been that way.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
KIA some interesting comments there. I would say that the IRFU are doing something about Connacht but it won't happen overnight. See I don't agree with the whipping boys quote. I believe they have acquitted themselves very well. They and especially Eric Elwood will learn from this experience and will be the better for it. We (Irish) should be hoping for a HC win no matter the shirt so Connacht can keep testing themselves at this level. I think they will improve.

Kia,
I don't think winning the Pro 12 would matter.
Connacht get to the HEC by
(1) An Irish Province winning the HEC
(2) An Irish Province wimnning the Amlin
(3) Connacht displacing one of the other 3 Provinces by finnishing higher than them in the Pro12.

The IRFU have given Connacht financial and other backing, to get themselves up a level to where they can compete. This goes on for 3 years. They have had a few near misses in fairness, Should have beaten Leinster in the PRO12 and Glaws in the HC. So not far off.
They need a win. Sooo bad.

On that note, how about Bradley at Edinburgh? Proving himself there. Smart move in prioritising the HC and just staying in touch in the PRO12.
He has taken the Irish approach to it. Bet they are happy with him.

Yes, I know they have given them some help this year, but memories are short if you don't remember last season when they reduced the length of Connacht's contracts. EVERYTHING Connacht have got they have had to beg for, almost on bended knee. I don't believe they are helped by the other provinces either

I always rated Bradley. I know our dear friend from 606 - Ummm, - thought Bradley was a plonker and a pretty useless coach, but given his resources ...
When he took charge of the Ireland team that went down under in 2008 as Kidney was HEC-tied with Munster in the final, Ireland played some really good rugby that tour. Rob Kearney was really given his head to run free in a way that didn't happen for the next few years (he's getting back to it now, but on that tour he played some of his better rugby for Ireland.

Rava, we were playing badly enough as it was, the commentator's curse didn't help! But we're at half-time and still in the hunt without having played well, if we can make better use of the ball when we have it, who knows?

I have to ask and am pretty sure I am correct in my thinking but am still curious because I have been out in the cold as far this coaches signing goes and I am also prob a bit slow/thick. But is this the same Michael Bradley I watched play scrum half for Ireland in the 90's? The one I thought should be dropped for throwing passes above every Out half's head that he played with? Once again apologies for being a bit slow/thick regarding this

Has someone told Don who won?
Our first was born on the night of the world snooker finals. Didn't find out who won until the following year when Ray Reardin was introduced as reigning champion. But I expect Don will not have to wait a year to find out.
Congratulations and hope Mum and babe are both doing well.

On that subject actually.
We had better hope that the Pienaars decide to keep extend their family further in the next 2 years if we hope to have an IQ 9/10 for the Ulster (mens) team in 20 odd years time.

Like Munster will have lots of Howletts and Leinster some Nacewas - this was the point Thornley in the Irish Times was making when talking about the new IRFU rule about NIQ players
