The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This is the first Pub of 606v2's second year, here's hoping for another good one.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Augustin Pichot, David Campese, Mal O'Kelly and Jim Williams above the bar!

I actually don't mind Stuart Barnes all that much either. I don't agree with everything he says and he clearly has he favourites but he isn't the worst person in the rugby discussion world.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Morning all, a good afternoon out yesterday with the regs. I can testify to Hughie's hungover state, he resorted to begging cold and flu tablets off me at one point.

Morning all. Good day out at London Scottish yesterday and nice to meet up with some of the other London 606ers.
Mickado, Banahan's tackle (although illegal) was not the worst I've seen. There was a far worse one perpetrated on Malzieu (I think) quite early in the game in last week's HC.
He was shoulder barged but was totally upended and was lucky not to come down on his head. He was pretty peed off about it, but no penalty was given then either. Is there more lenience being shown by referees in this area I wonder?
Grub time.

I think he might as well just pack his bags now and head of to the South of France a bit early. When on top form a great player, but more trouble than he is worth these days it would seem!!!

Oh dear Ozzy.
I am torn about these sorts of things as I am sure the young players are targets for every "have a go hero" out there after a few pints. It can be so hard to know if they are really to blame or just unfortunate.
I is very difficult to remain open minded about Armitage though as he seems a bit of a plonker even on the pitch.

Speaking from experience Rav?
Ozzy I dont use the word much but I really feel Delon Armitage is simply scum.
I genuinely think he embodies most of the current problems in English rugby.
I can't decscribe how little time I have for him.

That's the thing MrsP, I won't judge him on the incident without knowing the facts of what happened. He has not been charged with a crime aft6er all, and may well not be when the investigation is complete.
My gripe with him is that he must know that he will be a target for people who want to give abuse, due to his reputation, so why put yourself in that situation.

Alright Hound mate. It’s by no means the worst I’ve seen either, the only thing that irked me was that Barnes was positively celebrating it.
I watched the ASM match last week in the pub so I must have missed the Malzieu incident, I hate shoulder barging into touch, it’s as if your saying “I’m not good enough to tackle”…

I'll be honest with you Stag and say that i think that is a bit out of order mate. You are judging someone that you have never met as scum, based on what? A poor disciplinary record? There are others who have committed far worse offences on and off of a rugby pitch. Are they all scum as well?

A person convicted in a court of law of a felony crime is known as a felon.
As far as I know all Armitages misdemeanours have been rugby related and none has come before a Court of Law.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Ozzy, a lot of it is based on media. Other stuff is based on conversations I've had with people who've had direct dealings with him.
He's been involved in too many of these off the pitch incidents for me to write it off.
Assaulting a drugs officer, he had what four or five separate suspensions last year, arrested last weekend for assaulting somebody on a night out.
Its happening too often now. Get rid of him. People like him aren't needed in Rugby. If it was a once off I'd agree Pete but its not - time and again we see him crop up for the wrong reasons.
I know he is a London Irish player but are you suggesting his conduct is acceptable?

'Delon Armitage has been suspended from the England Saxons Elite Player Squad following his detention by Devon & Cornwall Police early on January 29.'
He's got a brother called Devon, hasn't he?
Stag, 'scum' is a very harsh word to be using.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Have you read the disciplinary hearing report for him 'assaulting' the doping officer Stag?
If not, perhaps you ought to, and then let me know if he actually 'assaulted' him in any real sense. Yes I know the law and I know the definition of assault, but have a read and tell me if by what was actually accepted as having happened the average man in the street would consider it an assault.
When you have people like Andy Robinson coming out and saying that he cited him for the tackle on Paterson at the world cup solely because of his reputation and he would not have cited other players for it, you have to ask yourself whether or not his disciplinary record is a fair one.
In any case, I do agree that he does bring some of this upon himself with his behaviour, but to label him as scum is completely over the top, as you have never met him and for every person you have spoken to who has spoken badly of him, I guarantee I produce one who will speak well of him.
You are of course entitled to your opinion, but to me, labelling him as scum is out of line.

Until now, possibly. He remains innocent until proven guilty (and whilst I wouldn't call him scum, he does seem like a bit of an eejit). In any event, it's not to be taken too seriously. The nickname that is.

To me he is someone England need to be well shot of.

The nickname is humorous, and Notch, I would agree, he is an eejit. As I said, he must know he is going to be a target for people, so why put yourself in that position. It's just plain daft.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
There was the whole 'spide', 'spade' controversy that happened when he visited Ravenhill with London Irish.
i.e. He engaged in verbals with Ulster players, Matt McCullough called him a spide, Armitage and London Irish tried to have him cited!
Genuine misunderstanding or the actions of a complete spide? Even in a nordie accent Spide and Spade do sound qualitatively different.

Anyway, no need to drag that up in any great detail. Just an example of how where he goes trouble follows.
I wouldn't call him scum, but if I was England coach I certainly wouldn't pick him either. Ever.

I think agreeing to disagree on this one is a good shout mate.
Word on the street is that Chris Robshaw will get the England captaincy for the first game of the campaign. Not sure I agree with that to be honest, would probably have gone for Hartley myself.

Not sure Mick but I've seen the Robshaw thing in the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, BBC Sport and the Mirror.

Pete (sorry I keep tping PcPete and then having to remember Ozzy)
I think Hartley is a good shout too. But maybe with Saints doing poorly at the minute he may not have the morale for it.

Were he fit Tom Wood without a shadow of a doubt. Comes across a model profressional based on RFU RWC report and a great little worker.

I'd question whether Murrayfield is the ideal place to ask a novice to lead out a new-look side featuring a few debutants. But it's a sink-or-swim decision, isn't it?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Its the ultimate sink or swim. I actually really like the way Lancaster is handling the squad.
He has set a code of conduct - Care and Armitage dealt with for misdemeanors - and looks to be instilling a work hard attitude in the team. I greatly admired his decision to cancel the training camp in sunny Portugal and instead head off to Leeds for a more basic training camp.
I would be inclined to give him the job if he does any sort of decent job. He looks to be building long term and is unlikely to yield results in the short term as he builds a new system on and off the field.

It'll be Saturday afternoon. I want to meet Glas and his buddies and get them settled into their hotel alright and can show them the walking and dart routes to and from hotel.
Im getting the Dublincoach for the first time. A Limerick - Dublin coach that takes less than 3 hours and has free WIFI on board. It uses motorway the entire way so no dopey stops into Tipperary and Offaly and Laois.

It is Mick - they are staying in D4 Hotels next to Aviva Stadium. By my reckoning its a 6-7 minute walk to Cassidys Bar, Zaytoons.
