The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has teleported itself inside Millenium Stadium this week to see if the men in red can manage a Slam. There's also TVs showing the other 6N matches, the U20s and Womens' matches, Super XV, the "Classic" match and LV= Cup action.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Mervyn Davies and Jock Hobbs above the bar!

Stag, you and I should talk about working out a special deal for me to tag along on the Lions tour in Limerick.
Don't be worrying about me looking for a free ride either. I have funds up to and including £47. STERLING.
How's it going buddy? Long time no chat.

Thats good. If my bones are weary, you'll hear about it. The most popular sport in Ulster is complaining
I was talking to my parents, they have booked a hotel for Saturday and Sunday night. I'm considering getting abck up to Belfast sooner via bus though. But will the buses be running on Easter Sunday? Thats my concern.

Afternoon pub.
For all you jubilant, over the moon, exultant etc. etc. Welsh folk, there’s a programme about the grand slam at 19:00 on BBC2 Wales on Wednesday. If you hadn’t already noticed.

They'll run like bank holidays. Your best bet is get a train to Dublin - book on Irishrail.ie in advance and it will cost you €10. Then bus it to Belfast.
You know the match is Easter Sunday right? You'll be hard pushed to go to the game, travel to Dublin and travel to Belfast. There are no direct public transport between Limerick and Belfast.

Afternoon, Hound. This grand slam has left me with a strange feeling, really. I'm not sure if I can explain it.

Lucky - I think I know what you mean. I don't feel anything like I did on '05 and '08, tis just different this time and I don't know why. I am definitely happy though!

Yeah... it might be tough. Which means either I ask my parents to book me alongside them in the hotel or I stay with you an extra night. But I don't want to lose Monday traveling.
The Easter Sunday makes things very awkward for me to get back the day of the game as you say though.

No, Stag, I can't see how there can be a downside to winning the grand slam (apart from the added expectation it brings). I think I feel the way I do because we still haven't really cut loose. I think we can play much better than we have this tournament.

Notch,
I would offer you a lift back with us but we'd have to strap you to the roof as all the seats are taken and even the boot will be full!

Is it fair to say that nowdays in the 6 Nations defence is worth more than attack?
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
No, they're of equal worth, always have been.

2005 - out of the blue and playing some great stuff, yeah we sneaked passed England but then 38pts, 24pts, 46pts and 32pts = 151pts in 5 games at 30.2 (17 tries)
2008 - 26pts, 30pts, 47pts, 16pts, 29pts = 148pts at 29.6 (13 tries)
2011 - 23pts, 27pts, 19pts, 24pts, 16pts = 109pts at 21.8(10 tries albeit all by backs)

But it does seem to be getting steadily harder to score points again in test rugby.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
I have always seen it that way anyway. You win the game when you don't have the ball. You need to soak up pressure for large portions of the game. Your defence can do that. A try can come from nothing, your defence needs to be spot on all game.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
I dunno Thomond, all Italy did was defend against Wales. It was a very very good defence, but we still comfortably beat them, and they only managed to get 3 points.
Doesn't matter how good your defence is, you need to bring a good attack to the pitch as well. Balance is what's needed.
And I think '05 is still my favourite Slam.

Enjoy the programme anyway. I could never see the Beeb on this side of the bridge eveor producung such a programme if England did the slam. Too 'imperialist' for them

Italy's defence was pathetic for the tries. Ireland's was shoite against Wales and we lost.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
It was pathetic Thomond but mainly because they were defending for so long. It's hard to make tackle after tackle, psychologically. It's psychologically hard to deal with not getting possession of the ball because it's so frustrating. You need to be able to play with the ball in your hands to really get confidence flowing. And obviously the longer opponents have possession in your half the more likely they are to conjure something up.
If you look at the top winning sides they mainly win the possession battle, although not always. The fact that there are multiple different ways to win a rugby game is part of the appeal of the sport. You could make an argument for any given tactic being the best and have someone throw out a load of contradictory examples off the top of their head. It's why Rugby is- in my opinion- the best sport in the world

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
I don't think anyone is going to change my view to be honest, defence is the most important facet of the game. Attack is important but not good scoring 5 tries if you concede 6 tries. I'm not saying attack is not important but you win the game when you don't have the ball.
