Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
I have updated for round 2 and made a note about teams with more than 1 pick, posters who only made 1 pick and waht happens if the draft slows down to a crawl i.e more than 18-24 hours since the last pick.

Awesome, lets get this show on the road...
Ingram, Sherrod, Clayborn and Liuget will be disappointed to have missed going in the first... how far will they fall?
and when will the QB rush begin...

Was close to picking Liuget for the Steelers as for me he was BPA but not sure if he can play 3-4 end. So went with the best DB

I was going to take Brooks Reed for Bills, but as he's now gone, i'm now going to take Mallet - unless Pats take him but very highly doubt that to be honest.

That could start off the quarterback rush as Locker has already gone. Quite surprised by some of the people currently unpicked, was expecting Torrey Smith to be taken towards the end of the first round.Cheesehead United wrote:I was going to take Brooks Reed for Bills, but as he's now gone, i'm now going to take Mallet - unless Pats take him but very highly doubt that to be honest.

Liguet is a 4-3 DT who can play the 3 technique, he is not suited to playing 3-4

I think the Ravens were considering taking Wide Receivers, but as Brandon Harris was still on the board they jumped at the opportunity

Exactly, the Packers always go BPA, but I didn't even put Liguet on my board when I re jigged it with 6 picks to go.
And sorry Cheesehead... as a fellow Packer I apologize for taking Brooks Reed away from you. I was close to taking an OT, but I have more knowledge of them further down the draft so thought I should hold off till round 2!

Mark Ingram finally gets taken after somehow falling out of the first round, there's teams who could use him more but he helps add an extra option to an already good running attack.

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
“Analysis”
Panthers: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn – Solid pick, all the pre-draft buzz suggests that Newton will be heading to Carolina, of course this could all be an elaborate smokescreen but when a number of draft followers with inside info get behind a pick it usually ends up being correct. Schefter has said he’s 80% sure that the Panthers will take Newton.
Broncos: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama – Similar to Newton this one seem to be the consensus among many of the respected draft followers which makes sense as Dareus is a perfect fit in the Broncos new 43 defense that Fox has said he will be installing. Solid pick.
Bills: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn – Fairley to the Bills is an intriguing thought. Most of what I’ve been reading suggests if Von Miller is on the board then he’ll be the pick here and Gailey himself has said how much he admires Miller. Ignoring any character concerns I think the first question is does he fit in with what Buffalo do on defense? Certainly we know he can play the 3 technique in a 43 but can he play 34 DE? Personally I think he’s got the tools to play the position but it’s would take some coaching. At Auburn his game was all about penetration so he got some licence to roam and he was a bit undisciplined in that respect, while at the end position in a 34 he’s going to have to be a bit more disciplined. He’s not 6’5, 300lbs like he was listed but at 6’3, 293lbs and with almost 35” arms he’s got the length to play the position and I know from watching him that he possesses the necessary anchor strength to hold up vs. multiple blockers.
Bengals: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri – Not sold on the idea of Gabbert to the Bengals. Firstly I’m not sure that the Missouri QB is value at this point in the draft and also there has been a lot of talk about AJ Green/Julio Jones going to the Bengals.
Cardinals: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M – Solid pick and he fits what the Cardinals like to do on defense. The other guy I would have considered is Patrick Peterson.
Browns: AJ Green, WR, Georgia – With the FO apparently getting behind Colt McCoy they need to give him some help at WR so AJ Green is a no brainer at this point. Solid pick.
49ers: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU – Solid pick. Need meets value.
Titans: Robert Quinn, DE, UNC – Probably the best DL player left on the board in terms of pass rush ability however his stock appears to be fluctuating quite a bit depending on what you read. A combination of the suggestion he’s too one dimensional, character questions and health concerns.
Cowboys: Tyron Smith, OT, USC – Solid pick. Again Smith to Dallas seems to be the consensus at the moment among draft followers.
Redskins: JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin – Has been climbing boards after his combine workout and should be a fit in the Washington defense. However I can see the Redskins going QB in round one and Shanahan is reportedly very high on Jake Locker who would be a perfect fit in the Skins offense.
Dolphins: Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida – I like this pick and it’s interesting that although Miami need interior OL help not many are suggesting Mike Pouncey as a possible pick for them. He’s been making some noise about being drafted before his brother and I believe that the Dolphins have worked him out. Solid pick.
Patriots: Cameron Jordan, DL, California – Another intriguing pick. BB has shown some interest pre-draft by giving him a private workout along with an interview. But where does he fit in our defense? At 287lbs he’s not big enough to hold up at DE full time although I could see him there in passing situations. There has been some suggestion he could be used in the elephant role that McGinest used to play but I’m not yet fully convinced.
Chiefs: Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor – Plenty of upside and he fits the Chiefs 2 gap scheme well but would Pioli take someone with his character and conditioning concerns? I’m not so sure.
Seahawks: Jake Locker, QB, Washington – Looks to be a fit on paper but there has been some talk of Bevell moving away from the play action, make plays outside the pocket WCO to more of a 3 step drop short passing offense.
Patriots: Jeremy Beal, LB, Oklahoma – Don’t want to be harsh but I don’t like this pick at all.
1) Beal is now projected to go from the 4th round down to the 7th round and even when his stock was highest he was in no way a 1st round prospect IMO so there is no value in taking him here.
2) His combine performance was so bad (5.14 in the 40 yard dash and a 1.78 10 yard split) that most draft followers don’t see him as an outside threat to rush the passer. His lack of speed has most now projecting him to ILB.
3) He’s not particularly strong vs. the run and being able to make plays in the run game is a requirement in a BB defense.

"Patriots: Jeremy Beal, LB, Oklahoma – Don’t want to be harsh but I don’t like this pick at all. "
Ok I admit this wasn't my best pick ever, although I have read that he is pretty quick and a decent pass rusher. It appears to be his size that is putting everybody off him, but if he can bulk up he may be able to do a job here.
But no it wasn't a great pick on my behalf, sorry.
I didn't pick badly on purpose even though I am a Dolphins man through and through.
Honest!

It’s not his size that’s the problem, 260lbs is fine for playing OLB, it’s that 5.14 in the 40 yard dash that’s the problem. At 6’2 he’s a little on the short side and he doesn’t have great arm length to make up for it which hurts him as far as playing in our defense goes. Really though it’s that 40 time and the lack of explosion he showed at the Combine (1.78 10 yard split and only 8’10” in the broad jump) which hurts him the most. If it was just a bad day at the office then fine but if that’s his real speed then there is no way he’s rushing the passer on the outside.
Just for reference Cameron Jordan had a 4.74 40 yard dash, 1.64 10 yard split and a better broad jump and 3 cone than Beal and Jordan weighed in at almost 290lbs, 30lbs more than Beal!
Don’t worry about it though it’s only because I’m a Pats fan that I’m pointing this out.

Interesting pick for the Bills, Chan Gailey has had more success developing mobile QBs a la Thigpen and Fitz, and with all due respect, Mallett is a statue. Dude is the best passer in the draft however.

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
It really bemuses and annoys me when you get players like Ryan Mallett. No end of talent, with a bit of coaching on his release and spiral he could be a top 10 NFL passer. He has all the talent in the world yet he has such a poor attidude he misses out on 40 million dollars. Pisses me off no end when you get these talented athletes coming out of college yet they have such a poor work ethic and attidude they never use it properly

Newton would be good, as they need some excitement there, as they havent had a player to own a game since Kelly.

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
I can just see Mallett being picked up by a desperate team who puts him in too early and he bombs. Or he could end up in the right situation and be the steal of the draft. Wouldn't mind seeing what he can do for us in San Fran, good offence where he can sit for a year and learn from a good coach

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
Newton will be good if he has the work ethic, if he's lazy then he could be the next JaMarcus Russell. I think its the same with Mallett (depending on where he gets drafted) especially after he apparently missed a visit to the Panthers because he went out, though his agent claims he was ill.AdZacO wrote:Newton would be good, as they need some excitement there, as they havent had a player to own a game since Kelly.

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
I’m not sure if Mallett is even good value at this point in the draft with all the baggage that comes with him in terms of character and work ethic concerns. You’ve got to think he is aware that his draft stock is in flux, unless he’s been told otherwise, so it concerns me when reports suggest that he missed an important meeting with the Panthers because he was out late the night before. Obviously it could be untrue but if it isn’t it suggests that he just doesn’t care that much which is a scary thought. That thought along with everything else would make me seriously question drafting this guy early.
As for whether he’s a fit for the Bills I think it would be difficult for him behind that OL as it stands just now. As has been pointed out already he’s not particularly mobile so he’s not going to be escaping pressure and making plays outside the pocket. In saying that Gailey has been touted as the kind of coach who will work with players’ strengths to create opportunities for them. Personally I see Mallett’s best fit being behind a solid OL in a vertical passing offense where he can stand in the pocket and use his arm strength to test defenses vertically. He’s excellent at throwing the deep out, fade and comeback which is going to catch the attention of the scouts because you need to be able to make these in the pros. Something else that Mallett is really good at is selling play action and I could see him thriving on an offense with a good running game where he could use PA which would buy him some time and allow him to pick out passes.

If Brooks Reid was still on the board I would have picked him, then waited to try and get Colin Kaepernick in round 3. Although, I'm not sure if he would have dropped down that low.

Mallett would be a good fit for the Bills as he can sit behind Fitz and learn from him, he has the big arm you need in Buffalo and in the 2nd round he’s definitely worth the risk.

Right, Pekchenko hasn't logeed on for a week now, so I'll nominate LeedsCowboys to take the pick please.
Also, I'll PM a list of choices for my teams to a few of you as I'm off away for a few days tomorrow.

Ok, wearing the Bengals GM hat, we have several holes to fill, we picked up a QB in the 1st round, we have strong RB in Benson, plus Chad O at wideout, after that we there is little to chose from, Owens will be 37 and is not getting any younger, there is not a lot of depth at Wideout so with the 3rd pick of the 2nd round and the 35th overall pick Cincinnati Bengals draft Leonard Hankerson FL he will offer a deep threat to the Bengals

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
There may be a few hours delay if it gets to my second Browns pick before half 5 because I've managed to forget who's next on my list but I should be able to pick not long after then.

With the 36th pick, the Broncos select Corey Liuget DT Illinois. Great value.

That would be a hell of a D line for the Broncos, Dareus, Liuget and Dumervil, from 2nd worst in the league at stopping the run to what looks like, on paper at least, a very good defensive line. Not too far off what your Buccs did last year Pr4wn, with McCoy and Price. Price didn't play too many games though did he what did you think of him?

Not think about Torrey Smith? Seems more of a deep threat speedwise

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
I looked at Smith but his stock has dropped
lets too many passes get into his body, has to learn to catch with his hands... Small hands, drops some catchable balls... Gathers himself a bit before going into open-field cuts... Rounds off some of his routes... Runs most of his routes along the sideline, hasn't shown a willingness to work the middle of the field.
still a good pick but now more mid-late 2nd round

Fair enough, where is that report from? I read a few mocks which had the Ravens taking Smith at the end of the first so I am surprised to see his stock drop that low.
First heard about him on Twitter, Chad Ochocinco tweeted saying he would be a first round pick back in February.

That's what the draft is amazing, 6-7 weeks ago DaQuaan Bowers was projected 1st overall, now he is touted as going at #20 to the Bucs. he might even fall into the 2nd round.

Interesting article there about Bowers regarding the possiblity of him being picked by the Vikings or Lions. I think if his knee is ok then both of those teams would have a legitimate claim to best D Line in the NFL if they take him.
Vikings - Allen, Williams, Williams, Bowers
Lions - Van Den Bosch, Williams, Suh, Bowers

Price only played one or two games before going on IR so it's tough to say. I know that the coaches were extremely impressed with him before he went down. I think he's a real prospect if he can stay healthy.
Also, I think McCoy is getting an unduly harsh time. People are only coming down on him because Suh had such a remarkable year last season. Warren Sapp didn't really start producing until his 3rd season and I think McCoy will turn out to be a dominant force.

Re: 606v2 Mock Draft
With regards to Bowers and the possibility of him dropping significantly just remember that this is the height of misinformation season pre-draft so things might not be quite what they seem. On the other hand when there are so many reports about his knee you have to think there is no smoke without fire, even if it’s not as bad as the information that’s being put out there. In any case it only takes one team to like him enough to take him high.
