The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
First topic message reminder :
Hamjambo. Karibuni Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has ventured to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to visit pub regular MBTGOG on his big trip there. Maisha marefu! Afya! Vifijo!
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Sir Fred "The Needle" Allen, Aberdeen Shikoyi, Isoa Damudamu, Chris "Mossy" Patterson, Nathan Hines and Simon Danielli. The poor defenseless IRB referee's jersey draped over the dartboard is fair game though

As,
Id have high hopes for Jackson. From the 1st time I saw him play. Great prospect. But Madigan has to tour in NZ. That alone, will bring him into the Irish fold sooner.
Ulster, in letting IHumph go, are really getting ruthless. Must be getting an experienced 10 in, to help young Paddy develop?
Any Saffer 10's going cheap out there? And more importantly - do they pray to the right God?

Depends on how Jackson plays really, he's an unknown quantity. He's played about 8 games or something for Ulster. It's all a bit soon to be talking him up. Just let him get on with doing his thing for Ulster.
I would say Madigan but sooner or later he's going to have to move to Munster or Ulster if he wants to be in the Ireland squad. Either that, or just replace Sexton for Leinster AND Ireland.

It could happen. IMO he is a vastly more talented rugby player than Sexton. A hell of a lot more talented.
However you need more than talent to succeed. Sexton is developing the mental strength needed to play #10 at a very high level.

Really, Staggy? More talented than the Sexton we see for Ireland or the one we see in Leinster's blue? They are two different players imo

More talented than Sexton was at his age. By "talent" I am referring to just his current rugby physical and technical skills.
However the other two things are hard work and mental fortitude. Sexton has both of them and it has really enhanced his game.
Remember as my old coach used to say "Hard work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard"

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
I totally disagree that Madigan is more talented than JS. What areas? How is he more talented? He may improve and aspire to that level, but as we all know, that dont always come about.
The only chance Madigan has of replacing Sexton, imo, is if Sexton moves to France in 2 years. I really think Leinster have that in mind. And the reason why they gave Madigan a 2 year contract. He will get oodles of game time in the PRO12 and enough in the HC, to keep him rolling. Also, Sexton could get injured and he may sieze that chance. He has a way to go yet though.

Gibbo,
Read my last post. I am just saying that Madigan has a wide skill set now than Sexton did four years ago and if he has the same work ethic and mental fortitude he can of course replace Sexton in the Leinster team.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
Fair enuf Stag. I had posted before reading that one.
Yes, he is sublimely talented. And out and out creative standoff with magic feet, a superb pass, great spatial awareness and a very sharp brain. I hope he starts pushing Sexton soon. Will need to sort out his positional and place kicking 1st. Whoever wins that battle - Leinster win either way.

A scrum half who can't pass and an outhalf who won't tackle. What could possibly go wrong?
Interestingly I don't recall people being so critical of TOL prior to him getting injured and missing out on the Lions tour. From memory the majority of posters on 606, Irish or otherwise were touting him heavily as first choice 9. I accept he has not hit that level since coming pack from injury, but clearly he can pass a rugby ball.
In relation to iHumph not tackling, meh!!! We have had a string of non tackling 10's at Irish, reaching the AP final in 2009 with one. We used ot cover it by putting Steffon Armitage in the 10 channel to defend off set piece ball, so no reason why we can't pop a backrower there again.

Thats the main thing and very true.
There is a feeling of a fresh start in Munster I have to say. There is talk of a coaching team of:
Rodd Penney - Director of Rugby
Anthony Foley - Fowards Coach
Tana Umaga - Backs Coach
It would be a great match. We are having a massive clear out this year. Hayes, Flannery, MickODriscoll, Wallace, O'Leary and Mafi are all leaving/retired earlier in the season and there is talk of Leamy retiring too.
Our head coach (McGahan) and backs coach (Holland) and team manager (Payne) are all leaving too. Its gonna be a new look Munster next year in some ways.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
Ozzy, regarding O'Leary in fairness you are harping back to games he played almost four years ago. Rugby is massively different now.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
Your backs will be as confrontational as your forwards with those coaches!!!! 15man maul's is it?!

Id love to see TOL and IHumph shine at Exiles. It may be just the move they need to get them back to their best.
It can be a very strong force - players who are out to prove their dissenters wrong. The more physical Jeff, may suit them down to the ground. Specially TOL.
If they do up their game to suit, Irish could really reap the benefits.

Prop, only Penney and Foley are confirmed. Our backs coach is yet undecided. Umaga applied for head coach along and was picked on the shortlist along with Foley and Penney so it would be great to get him as backs coach. He is apparently open to the idea.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Dar es Salaam
Which is where it would be awesome to see............the collisions would be huge!!!! Wonder if he'd come as 'player' coach just to line up BOD?

As I recall Stag, 4 years ago scrum halves were still required to pass a ball, something that TOL apparantly cannot do.
As Gibbo has suggested, both TOL and iHumph may have a point to prove, and that is something that has been a factor for Exeter Chiefs this season and last.

Penney looks like a great move Stag. As is Axel for for the forwards. Penney is a forwards coach also though eh? Will he take a back seat, just play Head Coach and let Axel get on with it? He is the right man to develop your Academy and younger players to their max. A lot of his CV shows this as a major strength of his.
I mean, coach for the U20 All Blacks. Not a bad background like.

Ozzy he can pass. His pass is not an issue IMO. He is a slow distributor however which has been a major criticim of him in last 3 years.
His strenghts are that he is excellent in first phase attacks brings the "extra flnanker" thing the backrow.

That is possibly something that Brian Smith can address. I think he could do well for us. He's still young enough to make improvements to his game and if he still harbours any international ambitions this could be the catalyst for him.
Is certainly going to be interesting to see how him and iHumph do for us.

I reckon if we got hauld of em As, their careers would be finished by the time they were 21. They'd have a ball though.

No I'm quite excited about the new future of Munster. Players come and go. The team remains the same
London Irish are excited with their hot and cold, sweet and sour pairing of O'Leary and Humphreys though they aren't sure which is which right now
Only Ulster are in CRISIS with the Heineken Cup final looming

Rava, I'll not lie to you. It knocked the stuffing out of me it did. It has taken me a while to find my mojo.
All jokes aside I am glad that:
- At least an Irish team will be champions
- Connacht have the Heineken Cup again next year
- There is a feeling of a new dawn for Munster with a clearout of players and coaches
