The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the host city London, where we can watch the greatest athletes from all four corners of the globe compete in a multitude of Sports under the one thousand flame Olympic torch... each wearing the 5 coloured Olympic rings of blue, white (or black), red, yellow and green.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896.
(but not too high obviously!)
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Marcus Aurelius, Henri Didon, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Sir Steve Redgrave, Cameron Van De Burgh, Marianne Vos, Murray Rose, Jesse Owens, Emil Zátopek,
Zara Phillips and her fabulous horse "Toytown" and last but not least.... Boris Johnson playing whiff-whaff against Danny Boyle.

Done a 31 hour week up there last week Luck on top of a 49 hour work week. But no complaints.
It's paying off having won our first competition three weeks ago we are sitting like 12th in Europe overall. so worth the time and effort.
juggling footie as well and I have started back playing basketball again. boy oh boy am I rubbish.

Hi Micky T. I miss you big fella.
Great to hear the band are doing well under your watch
It's all Olympics at the minute but with the announcement of the Rabo and HC match dates some people are planning trips.

Going back to college in September so maybe I will need to ease up on something I suspect.

Cheers buddy. can't say I am having too much of an influence from a chairpersons point of view but we are in a good place at the moment the real test will be Sunday in Galway going up against more of the big guns.
Yeh, we are looking at a few trips ourselves. it's looking though that the GF's dad's 60th is the night of the Munster game in the Aviva so that might already be curtailed.

Ireland actually don't have national basketball team anymore. They ran out of funding after some poor accounts work. Shame really, I knew a few lads who played from their underage side growing up. I'm a wiz at NBA Jam like.......
How's the T man? Hope you're alright haven't heard many stories about you on here but that might actually be a good thing.

That's right Thom. I seen that arlight which was very sad. I did get an email off them a good while ago when they first went bust looking to set up a bit of an Irish team on a lower budget. They must have just been contacting all registered players from the past and looking to make up an amature team possibly.
Ha Hughy, 1 cap wonder doesn't exactly shout world class from the roof top but I did alright back in the day..
All good here Thom yeh tend not to see much of Mickado in the off season with band and the likes so I am sure they will kick off again as the new season starts.
I Did share a pint with himself and Eoin on Saturday night. I was very much playing catch up with them though as they were on the Mojittos by the time I got there.

Yeah, it's a shame really, I know we weren't exactly world beaters in the sport but to see a team go bust due poor finanacial management is something that happens far too often in Irish sport (mainly in the league of Ireland but still not a good sight)

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
I got one cap Underage Luck played quite well actually then went back home practicing every day 500 shots, 500 free throws, 500 layups and they never called me back haha.
Then shattered my elbow so that was a right off after that. played a wee bit for a decent team afterwards then they hired 3 Lybian international players and upped our subs. so basically we were paying for them to take our place on the team so just packed in then.
Yeh Thom, it's pretty sad to see alright. I think with the basketball though it wasn't that they were actively spending carelessly or anything like that it was more just the TV money etc was being distributed more to the clubs and there wasn't really an interest in International basketball. and the funding was going into club level as well so it just wasn't sustainable for a sport not that popular.

It is relatively popular but not hugely alright, they get some good crowds for some of the league games with Neptune and UCC down here alright of a thousand or so.. It's heyday in Ireland has probably gone, there's a book about basketball in Ireland and how it used to be massively popular with thousands going to watch games but I can't remember the name of it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
I would well believe it alright Thom. Yeh south west definitely seems to be the best place for it still.
The basketball arena is 5 minutes from my house but because the team in Tallaght aren't about any more it doesn't get used apart from final weekends etc.
Now one of my best friends she is the managers down there and has done so much in bringing all sorts of events from Cage Fighting, boxing, Wrestling, Concerts, Conferences, College exams etc. but it just doesn't get the use of what it was purpose built for. I mean the band practice down there in band weather as well and we usually are able to get it at short notice.

Ye Mickado, you are reffering to John Paul one Ball is what you're doing there..
Gibbo, how are you pal. not a bother this side. Killester indeed where the big deal especially in the 80's/90's. In fact the only club in Ireland ever to have a player play for them and go on to play in the NBA. Mario Elie I believe was his name.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
Geez Mickado... that sounds painful.
Had a similar experience when I was about 13. A mate and I would sneak into a posh girl's school at night to 'spy' on the boarders. Things were going well until someone screamed and the place lit up. We then bolted down the driveway... my mate hurdles a fence (steel pickets with about 4 horizontal wires). I took the easier option (ran around the long way) for fear of getting sliced into pieces. It was pitch dark. We just managed to escape... the caretaker set the dog (german shepherd) on us. Can still hear the barking getting closer all these years later.
Interestingly enough I met a girl who went to the same school (PLC Pymble) years later whose dog (I think it was a boxer) used to follow her to school in the morning... then go home. Then it would come back to the school and wait for her as she came out of school in the afternoon. Every day. It was about 1km journey there and back and the dog had perfect timing.... apparently.
It had to negotiate a fence (not the same one) but on one particular day it was waiting for her - and not looking in too good a shape. It turns out that it had caught it's nuts somehow on a barbed wire fence along the way. Sack completely ripped open. The Vet had to improvise a special plastic 'protector' to stop it from over licking the damaged area. Poor thing never fully recovered.

Yeh Thom, a guy called Pat Burke I believed played for Orlando for about 62 games (not a lot in basketball terms) and I think spent two seasons at Phoenix Suns
Played a good bit around Europe after that. Big guy, 6ft 11.
He never played much basketball in Ireland went to University in America so just made his career there and then back in Europe.

It's long since been banned. Nowadays, it's the kids who beat up the teachers and probably film it too for mass circulation on the net.

They still use the rattan in Singapore and Malaysia I think... on adults!
Of course we used to have the old cat o' nine tails in the early days of the colony... but there was such a public outcry they stopped it in about 1842.

Penfro, lovely line alright. I might even use that on FB. I am a right robber of peoples quotes I won't lie.
Mickado, it is a most unfortunate name alright. I remember it well him dangling there using his forearms to stop him from descending further onto the spikes until the Ambulance arrived.

Biceps and lat strength are really important for tackling and ball retention so I wouldn't put one above the other.
Muscle imbalances - were the agonist muscle is much stronger than the antagonist - are a big cause of injury too so you certainly don't want to be training one and not the other unless you want bad elbow problems.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
Heads up Dragons fans. You've got Wasps away first up in the Amlin. Good news is it's on SaturdayBad news is it's a 20:10 ko.
Then you've got Bayonne at home (another 20:10 ko)
, and Mogliano as your back to back games.
