The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the host city London, where we can watch the greatest athletes from all four corners of the globe compete in a multitude of Sports under the one thousand flame Olympic torch... each wearing the 5 coloured Olympic rings of blue, white (or black), red, yellow and green.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896.
(but not too high obviously!)
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Marcus Aurelius, Henri Didon, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Sir Steve Redgrave, Cameron Van De Burgh, Marianne Vos, Murray Rose, Jesse Owens, Emil Zátopek,
Zara Phillips and her fabulous horse "Toytown" and last but not least.... Boris Johnson playing whiff-whaff against Danny Boyle.

Thom,
It's a good point. Drunk people tend to make you just feel uncomfortable when they are in large numbers. Chester is a beautiful place but during big race days, I stay well clear. Watching people falling around the place in suits and dresses isn't something I really want to see.
Kia,
It's called Momentum, a Christian festival. I'm volunteering on the sports team. It's on just outside Shepton Mallet.
luckless,
Maybe it's just the fact, he's a white ginger person. I think if he was black, it wouldn't come across so badly. Honest to say.

He looks a bit goofy and a bit of a prat, so did that gymnast when she was doing a celebration dance. Bolt seems to suit the arrogancw/swagger. Paul Hession does not.

It was a bit cringe-making the way he was going on. But hey, he has a gold medal and I don't!

I'm halfway to being drunk now Munsty, but yet can still spell correctly and possess reasonable grammar. Do I make you feel uncomfortable?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Just messing.
More medals tomorrow please. Andrew Murray bring your 'a' game.

Michael Phelps 22 Medals, 18 golds. I've no interest in swimming but that guy is the greatest. Nobody will ever top that. Amazing.

To the doubles Murray. Let Federer get the big one! Murray is a gereat player but he has time to win majors and Olympics. Fedex does not. Roger ahoy!

I wouldn't begrudge the Fed express but I'm a Murray fan. Would love to see him do it and it could be a real catalyst to his GS career if he won.

It's really not long at all now until the rugby season starts again. It's been a cr@p summer weather-wise, but there's been loads of sport (summer tours and all), so it seems like it's come around quickly.

Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side;
But then I spent so many nights
Thinkin' how you did me wrong
And I grew strong and I learned how to get along
And now you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd've known for just one second you'd back to bother me
Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
('cause) you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?

Brothers in Arms is too slow and melancholy for me. Agree with you on the intro to MFN but I can't stand the rest of that song! It was so overplayed at the time... that song really turned me off them

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
Morning all (evening Lb).
What a day for Team GB yesterday.
Lucky - pre season friendlies start up next weekend. And Ealing are coming to Cardiff RFC on 25th. Quite a few of the Ealing crowd are heading over for the game, and Penfro has mentioned meeting up in The City Arms before the game if you're up for a beer. And to watch some exciting backs play
There is also the 4N Championship starting on 18th. I'm probably going to pop an article up about any interested parties in/around London heading to the Wheatsheaf for the opening round of games. Bit of a gap between the first game (11:05 ko BST) and the second at 16:00, but it should be a good day of rugby and banter.

You've heard/seen Bradley Wiggins has done yes? He should have it locked up.
Morning to you all, apparently we ahve a slim chance of a medal in the Ominum track cycling. The fella lies 5th or 6th with 3 races to go.

I have done, but Ennis was the poster girl who won gold in athletics, the Olympic sport.
Personally, I like Katherine Grainger but I doubt she'll get it.

Ed Clancy is 5th I believe Thomond and has a decent shout of doing well enough in the remain events to win a medal.
Sports Personality of the Year is going to be a tough one to pick. If Andy Murray wins gold in the singles and mixed doubles he would have to be in the running as well. I suspect that Team GB will win the team award.
Going to have to try to tear myself away from the TV today as the house is falling to bits since the Olympics began!!!

Wiggins deserves it more and I think she will get it. If Farah can double up or even place in the 5k he will be up there. Tough year for nominations that's for sure.
Mon Federer, won't be watching it though. Cork take priority.

Love the Marathon - it's just about my favourite event.
I suppose a little bit of rain is much better than the stinking hot conditions of LA '84 or Barca '92
Starting to get the next Pawb together so any suggestions for wall pictures are now welcome. So many great athletes to chose from GB!
Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Wiggo, Leryn Franco (the Paraguayan javelin thrower)...
More nominations please...

They should have a joint award... any harm in doing that do you think? Would be a nice gesture.
I was also thinking of Stratford as the new Pub location... focusing in on the final week?

Breaker - At the ceremony, I think they have a number of smaller awards now before the main one being The Sports Personality of the Year. So Jess will probably win a somewhat patronising title like "Viewers Choice Woman of the Year"

I get the impression with Ennis that she will not care one jot if she fails to win an award at SPOTY. She has what she wanted, an Olympic GOLD medal, which I suspect is worth more to her than anything else in the world right now.

I don't think many sports people are that bothered about it are they? That's not what they work towards when they're training hard and putting in the hours and effort.

Balls to the tennis, I'm watching the men's gym. GB's Max Whitlock in the silver position at the mo. Louis Smith on next and he's the last one to go. Exciting stuff
One moan about the coverage - I'm finding the constant random shots of Kate Middleton irritating. Unnecessary if you ask me. It's all about the sport not celebs.

Louis Smith gets silver so Whitlock will get bronze. It was ridiculously close between Smith and the gold winner Hungarian Berky (who looks like Justin Tipuric!).
