The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the host city London, where we can watch the greatest athletes from all four corners of the globe compete in a multitude of Sports under the one thousand flame Olympic torch... each wearing the 5 coloured Olympic rings of blue, white (or black), red, yellow and green.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896.
(but not too high obviously!)
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Marcus Aurelius, Henri Didon, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Sir Steve Redgrave, Cameron Van De Burgh, Marianne Vos, Murray Rose, Jesse Owens, Emil Zátopek,
Zara Phillips and her fabulous horse "Toytown" and last but not least.... Boris Johnson playing whiff-whaff against Danny Boyle.

Does the term UK exclude NI or is just GB that does that? ( I notice how they call it GB & NI)

The UK includes Northern Ireland, so it would be a better name.

Seems a bit daft so they don't use it! I suppose that might imply that NI athletes would have to comepte for GB and that could cause some consternation in this PC world.

My motivation is the fact that the other half has a bath at her place so I can abuse that after a long run!!

Apparently it was the IOC that decided on 'Great Britain' rather than 'United Kingdom'.

O'Neill is out on the Irish side of things. Ogogo, of team GB and NI beat the number one ranked fella an will face Hartel who beat O'Neill. Have to say Hartel looked very good.
There is a really awful joke involving Ogogo and a certain Wham! song in there somewhere.

Are you sure luckless? Team GB isn't just used in the olympics?
UK is not a sovereign country, GB is. Sure your passport says GB & NI on it not UK.
Apparantly some of the radio 1 DJs were calling it Team England anyways .....

Two cycling teams got disqualified a second ago, not sure what for wasn't watching. GB won 2 Golds (shooting and canoeing I think) and a silver (judo) I think.
Edit: Early Changeover according to one poster, it's relay I'm guessing.

Evening All.
Yep, Victoria Pendleton and her team mate got disqualified - apparently a similar thing happened to them before, but I don't think they were disqualified then.

That silver in the Judo for Britain was brilliant stuff. Gibbons is 33rd in the World Rankings at her weight and she beat three of the Top Ten en route to Silver. Magnificent effort.

I think the home crowd support is helping a lot of athletes from GB. When rowing, the support when you go past your mates on a bridge has a huge effect on your ability to push to the max. I can only imagine what our athletes are getting from their support.

Evening all. Happy with the golds today, and the judo silver.
Great power by Soni in the last 20m in the 200m breaststroke.
I thought that Japanese, Suzuki, would have been quick.

Evening all, this medal winning business has left me worn out.
Reading back, I agree that Team UK would be the best name as that represents all of the countries contributing to the effort.
My passport definitely says The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and always has done, it has also always included the ridiculously embarrassing statement that begins "Her Britannic Majesty requires and requests..." honestly,
CJ - the Dutch women's hockey team AND Pendleton?!! Is that available on DVD? Just asking for a friend like.

You could have just said Gibbo Pj. We all know him like.
Stunning few days for team GB. Well done lads and lassies of UK. Some NI lads in the shout tomorrow too. Ulster lads competing at the top who are not South African. Who would have thought it?

You may think that T, but I couldn't possibly comment...
Highlight of the Olympics so far for me was Le Clos' dad, just brilliant. What a totally proud and cool dad.
