Olympics Day 6
Day 6 of the Olympics has just kicked off. Action in the velodrome begins today, can we continue the gold rush?

Quite a judo contest there - Gemma Gibbons, leads with a yuko with 7 seconds to go. Then, the judges award her opponent a yuko. Match restarts, Gibbons scores a yuko, time expires.
She's in the quarter finals!

Judo looks so frustrating to do.
Like those fights people had at Primary School where you'd both just grab each others clothes and try and pull them down.

Which starts at around 11:50 against the former World Champion Marhinde Verkerk.

It translates as "gentle way".
Always find it a good watch. QF on NOW on 301/Olympics 5. The sport's from Nippon, will she get an Ippon?

The rowing commentator is actually Garry Herbert. Anyway, it's that time again - time for him to lose it down the stretch.

Gutted that they feel so disappointed about that.
They did really well to get the silver, it was so close at the end.

I guess that Silver will be seen by many as a disappointing result , as the light four were looking like favourites for that one. Can't complain though as it was a fantastic race and a close and dramatic finish...they did well to just catch Denmark on the line , but SA ambushed everyone !
Another medal anyway.
Five finals so far , 1 each gold silver and Bronze ...8 more crews in finals to go...

Fantastic rowing by the men's lightweight four, they timed everything perfectly to beat the Danes but they just didn't budget for the South African's. It's silver, well done lads. Nothing in the women's eight though.

Re: Olympics Day 6
Ben Ainslie is leading race seven. Rival and gold favourite Jonas Christensen of Denmark is in tenth.
Ten points seperate Ainslie and Christensen. It is the last leg. If results stay the same Ben will be one point off over all event lead.
He will have closed the ten point gap.
Great work by Ainslie...!
Looking very good for team GBR her in Weymouth.

Great result with GBR winning the last 49er skiff race and their rivals the Aussies having a shocker...

Andy Murray has beaten Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4 6-1 in less than an hour to reach the Olympic singles semi-finals, where he will play Novak Djokovic or Jo-Wilfired Tsonga. He's 2 games from glory!

Re: Olympics Day 6
Now I don't understand shooting at all, so I've copy and pasted this from the BBC:
Great Britain's Peter Wilson is on target for a gold medal in the men's double trap as he leads by three shots going into the final at 1500 BST.
The 25-year-old from Dorset, who is the world record holder and world number two, topped the qualifying stages with a score of 143 out of 150 at the Royal Artillery Barracks.
With 50 clays left to shoot, the three-shot advantage could be crucial in the six-man final at 1500 BST. Wilson scored 48, 48 and 47 in qualifying.
Sounding promising.

Re: Olympics Day 6
I honestly cannot wait until we properly get into the actual Olympic events ie Track and Field.
There's a load of dross (like sailing etc) to wade through first
I guess it means there something for everyone, but we really are moving away from the Olympic ideals. Humbug!

This is confirmed that the points going into the last three races is
Denmark 14 points
GBR 18 points
We are definitely now in with a shot of gold.
Another race today, two more races tomorrow and a double point medal race on Sunday.
Let's hope Ben has another great race today and Jonas of Denmark has another poor race Ben could be leading by the end of the day.

The other fleets all went really well as well.
Percy Simpson in the star came third they are leading and looking great for a gold.
Rhodes and Morrisson won the 49er race putting them right in the medal mix.
The lads in the 470 started reall well with. A second place for their very first race.
All are doing one more race today...!
Sailing is looking like a good option for lots of medals.

I'm enthralled with the judo now, Gemma Gibbons is really going for it, I think this an example of the crowd support being an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

Boys 470 leading
Ben and Jonas in the Finn having a hell of a dog fight
Star looking good we are in fourth but even with current standings miles ahead over all.

Is that guaranteed bronze (like boxing) or play-off for it (like fencing or tennis)?

Re: Olympics Day 6
Holy mother, that was exciting.
As for the bronze thing in judo, it's a bit complicated. There are two bronzes, but they're fought for by the two losers of the semis and the two winners of the repachages (which involve the four losers of the quarters).
Not that it matters as Crimey said, and I bet that didn't make much sense anyway.
Always love a good surprise medal. Great stuff Gemma Gibbons.
