Olympics, Day 7
First topic message reminder :
Getting this up early as I'm off soon.
A great day for us yesterday as we won three golds, taking our score to 5. We now sit 5th in the medal table and with any luck could sit in 3rd by the day is out.
The main event starts today as well, with the athletics kicking off at 10 with Jess Ennis.
AND COME ON ALAN CAMPBELL!

Back to 4th I think - a win by Queen Victoria or Dame Rebecca puts us 3rd.

Did you know they edited the Women Gymnastics Team final so it looked like the US needed to nail the final routine to win? When actually the Russians made the mistake before the US, and not after as NBC showed.

Geraint Thomas knew what he was doing missing the Tour for this...What a team
Did you hear Cav talking about that earlier? aparently he wanted tio be on the track team as well but would have had to qualify for and compete at a world cup event to do that. Whereas some French bloke was allowed on the road race despite never having raced off the track before. He didnt sound too happy.
Its a shame, it wouldve been interesting to see if he really could cut it on the track after how much work hes had to do to make himself a tour cyclist.
Keirin really is a ridiculous event, apparently it only got into the olympics through corruption, four members of the UCI were arrested for accepting money in return for pushing for its inclusion.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
I don't know how Pendleton has so much power - she's not hugely muiscular like some of her competitors, but is just so efficient at carrying high speed for a distance (was something like 300m in that sprint)
I like the Kierin, because it is (despite the absurdity of the Derny bike) a pure race at the end - the rider who can carry sprint speed for longest wins.

Fantastic win for Victoria Pendleton
(That blasted commissar was studying the tape for ages there but I think it is official now...)
A great performance ...Anna Meares made a bad tactical mistake there which surprised me as I really thought she was nailed on for second at worst. I think Vicky un- nerves her sometimes .
After the team sprint this is redemption for Vicky ...and a sign that even with the programme changes Team GB may go close to the Beijing results !

Murray is holding his own against Djokovic in the first set. If he can get past him that's guaranteed at least a silver.
3rd is essentially our 1st because we'll never get past US or China, so if we can keep this up that would be amazing.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
So Gold for the men's team pursuit and a new WR.
Gold for Victoria Pendleton in the Keirin.
That makes it 3 Gold and 3 Bronze for today. Hopefully, Adlington can make it another Gold in her favoured event, the 800m Freestyle final at 19:45. Also tonight, Ennis and KRT resume their Heptathlon bids and the GB women's football team play Canada in the Quarter-Finals. Finally, Jo Pavey of GB is in women's 10,000m final at 21:25.
And we're 3rd in the Medals table.

If we finish third, that's ludicrous. I know we can't really count countries like India and Brazil as ones that should beat us because of their relative lack of affluence (well, absolute lack really) but there are loads of bigger countries that should be producing as good athletes as us

We are looking really good for two golds on Sunday in the Mens sailing.
Single handed Finn Class Ben Ainslie and in the Star Keel Boat Class Ian Percy with his Crew Andrew Simpson.

First 3 of my fantastic 4 gold medals have come in. Just need a bit of magic from Dame Becky and I'll be confident enough to give you my fabulous five for tomorrow
Ainslie was great. He got himself into a position where he only has to beat the Dane in the medal race on Sunday to take gold.

Chequered like who?
We should have been doing alot better before in fairness, We did well in 2008 , but before then its been abit tragic for a long time!
Its all about the size of the economy- UK are allways 4-6 in that stake so its about time we produced.
There is no conincidence that the 6 largest economies in the world do well in the olympics, usa, china, japan,uk,france and germany

India love cricket. Cricket isn't an Olympic sport. They were good at hockey, but haven't been the same since they got rid of grass pitches.

Well, France, Germany and Japan to take 3 of your examples, Japan have a higher population and GDP. Russia too. I suppose that's it in the countries ahead of us on population and similar in economics

AWESOME...! Superb. Magnificent...
over four races he has pulled the ten point lead Jonas Christensen of Denmark had down to just two points. The medal race is on Sunday and is worth double points. so basically both sailors are just going head to head...
Going to be a superb finale to this fantastic series...
A huge amount of respect has to go to Christensen who has surprised the sailing world, he has never been a form sailor, never really impressing at the big regattas and is not of the Professional ilk of many of his competitors...
But Ainslie showed why he is one of the best ever today

India just doesnt have the right gdp per head to compete in these sort of games(they have the population though)- Doing well at the olympics requires exess money- its throw away money really. The olympics medal table is a 'how big is your d..." contest really. Cricket aids and stimulates indias economy, olympic sports just cost money on the whole.

People whine and moan and complain when Brits do badly at things. All we hear is how British people are losers and chokers, and don't have the mentality or the will to win.
And now we are winning, you're saying "Meh, I don't care, we should be winning anyway"
Not a great attitude.

russia doesnt have a higher gdp- the rest of us (japan, germany, france,uk) are so similar economically that we are close to par. so beating them isnt an impossible thing to do - just a good thing!
basically point is population is immaterial- if you havent got excess money. But if you do(russia of old) and china of today- you are gonna be very good!!!
