Olympics, Day 7
First topic message reminder :
Getting this up early as I'm off soon.
A great day for us yesterday as we won three golds, taking our score to 5. We now sit 5th in the medal table and with any luck could sit in 3rd by the day is out.
The main event starts today as well, with the athletics kicking off at 10 with Jess Ennis.
AND COME ON ALAN CAMPBELL!

I think you'll find that they have a government/councils in Northern Ireland and that they do raise some income themselves!!.................
And any NI citizen is allowed choose whether they are Irish or British as per Good Friday Agreement.................that's why the NI Football are having a hard time holding on to certain players........
A quick look at a Map and i think it's easily seen what country it originally belonged to
That was allways my point john. .ni is part of the UK. We are the UK.
Ni belongs to it self. And is part of a union.
Offcourse it's the individuals choice. You are barking up the wrong tree .

Ainslie wins the last race before the medal race and keeps the Dane in third.
It means that it's a straight battle on Sunday - whoever finishes the race first wins the gold. No other boats matter. Great stuff from Ben - should be in pole position now.

Oh. Alex Smith - hammer thrower has just been confirmed as making the Olympic final. 10th in his group, but only 2 guys went further in the second group.

Fair play to Ainslie, should be an interesting finale. Annalise finishes second in race 7 and extends her overall lead to 8 points. 3 races to go and medal race (she could have medal more or less guaranteed if things go well before the medal race). Keep that flag flying girl!

Ainslie is an amazing competitor ...remembering the way he won in Sydney with that tactical battle in the last race...
The Dane was great early in the series so you can't assume anything , but Ben has achieved exactly what he wanted over the last few races to be in a position where it is now a straight fight for Gold.
If I were a betting man I know who I'd be backing

Bit of a (pleasant) surprise there ...Confess I gave him no chance after his group finished . Nice to see a GB male thrower in a final !
And there are a lot of people I know in another place who would not have had him on the team

Well done Bryant, a very respectable Bronze. 1 Gold and 3 Bronze today for GB, let's hope the Cycling and Adlington will bump us up a bit in the Gold medal camp.

I would go with more than 'very respectable'. Anyone who can throw someone the size of that Ukrainian woman needs all the respect in the world, I'm going with awesome.

Good to see Bryant get an Olympic medal at last .
And I imagine those who run British judo will be mightily relieved at the last two days : a third blank Olympics would have left their funding in a very precarious place...

Murray may never get a better chance for a Gold medal. Federer will be knackered for the final after that epic win.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
I question if Tennis should be an Olympic event at all. A gold medal should be the pinnacle of the sport in question but in events like Tennis I get the impression that winning a grand slam would mean alot more to the players. This devalues the Olympic gold.

tennis, fotball, golf(to come), rugby 7's(to come), they must be plenty more as well.
At least with football they make it age group to an extent. Maybe tennis should follow that example.

Why does it matter though? It's not as if Tennis being included is a detriment to the 100m or anything like that.
I'm all for including all sports, it's good to see all sports in one huge event.
Rafael Nadal said that as a tennis player the Grand Slams mean more, but as an athlete (which all tennis players are as well) an Olympic gold is the pinnacle.

Re: Olympics, Day 7
It matters because I think the Olympic gold medal should be the most important thing for an athlete. If it isnt, then that sport should not be included in my opinion. Or perhaps as an alternative you could include the sport but not have it a medal event. I fear before too long we are going to see darts and pool as Olympic medal events.

I think Nadal is just being as diplomatic as possible. He obviously doesnt want to downplay the Olympics but in reality the players just dont place the same emphasis on it as grand slams. Its almost like exhibition tennis. I think it cheapens the meaning of the Olympic gold and what its meant to stand for. You may be right that there is no harm in including more events as part of a grand spectacle but save the medals for those events that it represents the pinnacle of sport in!

Re: Olympics, Day 7
I think the amount Federer tries every Olympics and the importance that Murray has put on it shows you what it means to the tennis players...I can understand the argument against it but as people have said i think it,'s a good thing having it.
I can certainly think of other 'sports' which I would much rather be excluded before tennis puti that way.
I believe that they have a system now where by 2 new sports are introduced per Olympics at the expense of two sports....clearly if their was that big an issue with it it being in the games it would have been voted out by now.
Anyone know how they are going to go about doing the golf?..Im pretty sure its due to be in Rio in 4 year and if thats the case one hopes a course is being built because as far as I am aware Brazil isn't notorious for it's golfing venues.
Personally I think the Golf should just be a case of putting a bucket 200 yards away and giving each competitor 100 balls...most in the bucket win...i would watch that!

I think if your there in the event- you are gonna try as hard as possible to win. However I cannot believe that any player is going to try and be at peak peformance levels for the tennis. They would have allready put there heart and soul into wimby and will be looking to peak for the next major!

I suppose it depends what you think Olympics is predominantly for. The audience or the athletes.
I think it's essentially entertainment, and sports like tennis, football etc. make it more entertaining.
