Olympics Day 13
First topic message reminder :
Day 13 of the Games. Chances for gold today include Kerri Anne Payne in the 10k open water swim, Charlotte Dujardin in the individual dressage, Nicola Adams in the boxing and the men's 470 in the sailing. Really looking to put extra distance between us and the Russians today. But, in a digression from what I normally do, but I'm sure you will excuse me this once.............
COME ON KATIE TAYLOR! YOU'RE INDESTRUCTIBLE!

Then swimming needs one per team next time, 18 golds for the yanks, without swimming we would be ahead, gymnastics too.. The ping pong. badminton, diving, etc. The only time things have been cut is when we win.

Re: Olympics Day 13
Can't be bothered to quote but:
The Cycling changes were brought in mostly as a reaction to GB's performance in the last Olympics though plans were well underway before then.
Essentially it was to stop situations where you get a Sprint final between Kenny and Hoy, which are good for us but a bit boring for the rest of the world. The events were also re-jigged so that they were less similar. For example, instead of having an Individual Pursuit and a Team Pursuit we had only the Team Pursuit and the very different and challenging Omnium. I suppose this stops the situation where one athlete takes home a quarter of the medals - Hoy.
On Usain I always think that him slowing down must be an illusion. I reckon he's actually going flat out, but that his height (unusually tall for a sprinter) and hence different stride pattern makes it look like he's cruising.

You say it was bought in to stop Hoy and Kenny, but you have no problem with Jamaica getting the top 3 in the 200 metres?
Let me put this another way, you have no problem with one person(Phelps) taking over 50 percent of medals home, or Bolt and Jamaica taking 90 percent of the 100/200, medals home in the last 2 Olympics? But if we win too many on a bike you do? is that the facts?

Re: Olympics Day 13
Its not a good thing is it- its clearly bad form by any olympic commitee to target a team. Imagine the upraoar in the usa if we did it for swimming!! they would probally boycott it!
However the british team were fully aware that the rules changend due to there dominance- it just spurred them on to another level! the only thing to do in these situations

Sprint in athletics isn't a 1 on 1 competition though. Except the 200m which was Bolt vs Blake

Lads the Olympics would be broing if you brought in rules to stop the people winning it, it was wrong what they did in cycling but if we only had Bolt say in the sprinting it would have been rubbish.

The cycling was a joke with no Hoy, only Kenny.

Is the beach volleyball, 1 on 1, or ping pong? Yet they both have two teams. If after 50 years we find a sport we are good at, they change the rules.

There should be 3 teams in each or 1 team.

Don't be such a simpering liberal Eire, it simply means Germany Above All, and in the context of men's beach volleyball factually correct
Hardly related to WW2 as you insinuate, in no way is it an unacceptable thing to say.

No, its actually a very unacceptable phrase. Its not something that is said in civilised conversations. Just trying to help the lad out in case he actually meets a German and says it to him/her one day.
Thanks also for getting personal and name calling but i do have some idea about this.

Re: Olympics Day 13
You actually have no idea about it at all.
It's still in the first line of the German national anthem as sung at all sporting events. There is nothing inappropriate about it at all, and I wasn't getting personal.
So if you think it's inappropriate thing to say you better get on the phone to Angela Merkel and get her to take it out.

Still only think a simpering Guardian reading ninny would be offended by it. Same sort of drip that is offended by "rebellious Scots to crush" in GSTQ.

Its not a phrase used by Germans in the German language, in fact its shunned. It is mainly used by other nations to incite aggression and anger.
You are a highly intelligent person in possesion of wonderous worldly knowledge so please dont take my word for it. Why dont you simply go find the first big German you see and impress him with your wonderous knowledge and say that to his face, there's a good lad
If you do, please make sure there is someone with a camera to provide us with a fantastic YouTube moment

Actually, I used to go out with a German, and they've got a susprisingly good sense of humour about the whole thing.
What is more offensive is people getting offended on other peoples behalf such as people in this country are fond of doing.

I live in Holland, close to the border. Work for a German company where 80% of people are German and speak German fluently.
You are absolutely wrong on this this but by all means please do what i suggested above

No probs there, I didnt know either. I just saw the reaction it got when i was at a hockey match between Holland and Germany years ago, it ended in a massive brawl and when i asked my German colleague what it was all about he explained it to me fully.

GB were well off form, the Dutch commentators could not believe it. They were really worried about the match and were shocked that GB didnt turn up at all.

Hockey is huge here, never liked it until i moved to Holland. Its almost as big as football.
They were only smashed because they simply didnt turn up. It happens to the best on occasions. Now on to play the Aussies which will be difficult.

I'll have to stay up to watch the anthems then. Will they segregate the respective fans? From what I've seen it's been a highly successful tournament so far and a huge credit to LOCOG and all of the spectators at the hockey matches.

Billy, I learned German in school, of course I know what it means in the practical sense and the historical sense. I'm not a complete asshat like. Did I need to say it probably not but I'm fully aware of what it means and how it is controversial in certain parts of Germany. I'm not an idiot like.

There wasn't really an issue Bill, I'm not completely thoughtless to utter it in front of a person who would be offended. Why did I post it on here? Well I was rooting for Germany and did it for a bit of a laugh. Was it insensitive and offensive yes. Do I apologise for that? Yes, I do but it's probably not the only comment over the last few days to be offensive. I appreciate the help but I think most people are aware of what that means and would knnow not use it in most situations.
