The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Liverpool in honour of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, who may finally receive justice.
We are also mourning the sudden loss of Nevin Spence, his father Noel and brother Graeme, who died tragically at their farm in Hillsborough, Co. Down yesterday.
We offer our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his sisters Emma (who remains in a stable condition in hospital), Laura, their mother Essie, family and all friends and fans of the Ulster Rugby community.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Andy Murray, Craig Newby and Delme Thomas.

The reasons why English clubs have failed recently is to do with the English set up not the HC. That's all the Celtic negotiators need to remember. Tell them to slim down the Jeff. Simple.

THat try by Nev at Bath still makes me laugh.
I recall some stupid journo, cant remember which, berated him for an over the top celebration and the game was going the way of soccer blah blah !
Nev laughed his leg off at that - he admitted he was totally out of control and had no idea what was going on. His only thought was to get over the line.

Hopefully we get a 16 team Heineken Cup. 8 Celtic teams, 8 French teams. English can sling their hook at this point as far as I'm concerned. When they first boycotted the competition they had some of the strongest teams in Europe. A 16-team Heineken Cup without them wouldn't necessarily be any lower quality any more.
It's just the French, what they decide. They hold the power.

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
I think its petty to want the English out. I want them in but I want them to backpedal on their demands.
I've said it before. I would happily accept a 20 team Heineken Cup as follows:
5 English
5 French
1 Irish
1 Scottish
1 Welsh
1 Italian
4 'Rabo'
1 Heineken Cup Winner
1 Amlin Cup Winner
That allows for a 16 team Amlin Cup:
4 'Rabo'
6 English
6 French
I think its a realistic middle ground and could actually enhance European Rugby if done properly.

That would be good, but they won't accept it. This is what it is now- what will their demands be in two years if we cave in on this?
Let's not go Neville Chamberlain on this. You try and appease a bully and he'll just take and take.

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
Negotiation is not appeasement Notch. It comes down to the French. If they align with the English we have to negotiate. If they decide to do a U Turn then yes we continue on without the English.
However I think that all this talk about how hopefully they will be kicked out is not right.
Hopefully we can continue ahead as we have been doing.

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
I would much rather they stayed long term but they don't seem willing to sit down and negotiate at all. If they were/are, great. Genuinely brilliant.
If they still think they can dictate the future of rugby down the barrel of a metaphorical gun...

I'm with you notch. This needs to be stamped out for good now. Even the French said it last week. They want it sorted asap and for it not to drag on for a couple of seasons.
Hopefully that mentality will stick

I would love to be in on this negotiation.
"it would assist me greatly if you could tell me what are your problems with the Status Quo?"
"the Irish teams rest their best players in the Pro 12"
"forgive me, but aren't we here to discuss the Heineken Cup?"

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
On Saturday, Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty had said: "The context everyone has to remember is that there is no European competition after 2014 for anyone, because notice has been served on the accord so there is a vacuum in 2014.
"We are trying to decide - everyone is trying to decide - what should replace it.Whichever way, there will be new competitions after 2014."
How is that helpful to anyone?? Going in with a mindset like is only going to cause more and more problems.
The whole situation, It's just so disheartening

The HEC means a lot to I would say a fair few of us in here Hoog
Would just say there's no point getting to so het up about it before anything's been discussed or that there are any solid facts on the table. Speculation doesn't help anyone. No one knows what the French are going to do, so may as well just wait and find some real facts before upsetting yourself is all

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
Statement from Ulster Rugby Captain, Johann Muller, on the Spence Family Tragedy
On behalf of the entire Ulster Rugby squad, I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Spence family at this time.
Nevin’s loss will be felt deeply by us all. We are equally saddened by the tragic deaths of his father Noel and his brother Graham. The thoughts of every member of the squad are with Nevin’s mother Essie, and his sisters Emma and Laura. We would also like to pass on our condolences to Graham’s wife and children. We wish Emma a full and speedy recovery.
Nevin Spence was a highly skilful and gifted rugby player. He was utterly committed to Ulster and was enormously proud to represent his Province. He was determined to be the best that he could be and I have no doubt that he would have gone on to play for Ireland on many occasions. He was the kind of player that inspired others with his attitude in training and sheer will to win in matches.
His positive outlook on life brought a smile to people’s faces. He was kind, polite, generous and courageous, and we were blessed to have him in our team. The one comfort for us as a squad is that we have each other for support. It has been a difficult time for the players and coaches but I believe that through this tragic loss, we will have a new sense of togetherness.
I and the rest of the Ulster Rugby squad would like to thank the many people who have sent messages of support to the club, not only from within the Province, but throughout Ireland, Europe and the world. It is clear from these messages that Nevin was highly regarded by players and fans of many different sports, in many different countries.
I would like to thank the organising committee of the RaboDirect PRO12 for postponing this weekend’s game with Zebre and for allowing us the space and time to begin to come to terms with Nevin’s loss.
In the coming weeks, the Ulster Rugby team will return to the pitch. Over the course of the rest of this year and in future seasons we will experience wins and we will no doubt suffer defeats. Players will move on or retire and new players will come in and represent the Province. But going forward, at Ulster Rugby, one thing will never change. As long as this great club exists, the person and the player, Nevin Spence, will never be forgotten.

In the next few weeks it will be Paddy Butler
In the next few months it will be CJ Stander
I'm not that worried especially as Peter O'Mahony also plays #8. It does hurt our depth though.

NEWS
Rugby: Today’s meeting of ERC stakeholders in Dublin to discuss a new accord for the structure and format of European rugby for the 2014/15 season and beyond has seen “productive discussions” towards a new agreement according to a statement released this afternoon.
Representatives of all six European rugby unions and the English, French and Welsh clubs met against the backdrop of a new €234 million TV deal signed between English Premiership Rugby and BT Vision, for rights to the Aviva Premiership and, from 2014 onwards, matches involving English clubs in any European competition.
Complicating matters further is that both ERC and the English RFU dispute the legality of Premiership Rugby’s deal with BT, while Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty likewise disputes the legality of ERC’s four-year deal with Sky, which is rumoured to be worth around €70 million over four years, from 2014 onwards.
A statement released after today’s five-hour meeting at the Westbury Hotel was short on detail, but did announce that all parties would continue the consultative process at a meeting in Rome on October 8th.

Afternoon all, hope everyone's well.
Absolute nightmare journey home overnight, our plane was late arriving in Faro as a passenger on the flight down had a stroke over northern Spain, forcing the plane to turn back to Gatwick.
So as a result we landed at 3am. I got home after 5, but managed to sleep until 2
And all this to be 10 degrees cooler, and not immersed in a swimming pool with a number of young ladies in bikinis

I try to avoid too much current affairs because it is usually depressing. More's the pity. There are some great things happening in the world too, but they're boring as far as the news channels are concerned. I used to like that bit Russell Howard did on his news show called "It's Not All Doom & Gloom". He always used to find lovely stories that made you laugh or go "Awww that's lovely!"
I'm good ta. Although my voice is going - I sound like I've smoked twenty fags, and I gave up four years ago...Just been working and pottering about really. I've found myself on the editorial team for the work's mag. It's nothing fancy and doesn't go further than around the organisation, but it keeps me busy, and I used to do a lot of that stuff before in my old place and at uni.

I'm on the verge of stopping smoking. On the electrics mostly now. Had a few on Saturday watching that pish though. Going to try the electrics all weekend at my music festival. As it's not chock full of chemicals like proper smokes, I am already getting the benefits, fitness wise etc.
I gained and lost a rugby match today. I can now go to Embra home a week on Friday (good for getting my worth out of my Season Ticket) and can't now go to Scarlets away (good for my wallet I suppose).

Sorry to hear of the two Police Officers too. I know a few friends and my family who are gutted by it.
Was also a bit twitchy hearing about the attack on the place I visit sometimes. Was pretty close in parts to where I and my colleagues work.

Please feel free to ignore this post, I just need to vent some frustration as I have just listened to that smarmy self satisfied Kumquat David Cameron wittering on about how todays events are a stark reminder about the dangers that police officers face every day and that is a unique profession that he values dearly. Yeah, of course you do you Frak bumhole, that's why since April I have bringing home on average £300 less each month than I was before due to your changes to my pay and conditions, and I can look forward to now having to work for an extra 4 years than I previously would have had to in order to get my dramatically reduced pension that I am now paying more for. Very strange when I read that MP pensions will only change for new people onto the scheme, not for existing MP's. soloist.
Two PC's lost their lives today doing their job. A job that they did without fear nor favour. For reasons which are yet unclear they were deliberately lured to an address and blown to pieces. Their colleagues are now having to face the task of remain professional and collating the evidence whilst dealing with their own immediate grief. I salute those officers in GMP as I remember all to well the day last year when I was told of my own friend and colleagues murder, albeit in very different circumstances. The world is changing, and at times not for the better, yet the people in power do nothing to ensure that those entrusted with keeping the public safe are provided with the tools to enable them to do so properly.
Sleep well tonight Mr Cameron, I am certain that you will, as you are not the man who walked in from work this evening to a crying wife who knows that on any given day, it could have been her husbands face appearing on the news.
Rest in Peace PC Fiona Bone and PC Nicola Hughes.
Officers down, never forgotten.

Thanks guys, apologies for going off on one, has just been a long few days and I am tired and a bit emotional. Ah well, at least Arsenal are winning in the Champions League tonight!
