The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Liverpool in honour of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, who may finally receive justice.
We are also mourning the sudden loss of Nevin Spence, his father Noel and brother Graeme, who died tragically at their farm in Hillsborough, Co. Down yesterday.
We offer our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his sisters Emma (who remains in a stable condition in hospital), Laura, their mother Essie, family and all friends and fans of the Ulster Rugby community.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Andy Murray, Craig Newby and Delme Thomas.

Rant away my friend, tis what we are here for, always reckon tis best not to bottle things up
My Dad's pretty chuffed at the Arsenal score at the moment too, and that's without him not having stopped talking about their result last weekend, I shall never hear the end of them!

Well Arsenal appear to be doing their best this half to chuck this one away. Can see Montpellier nicking an equaliser here!!!
Rava, have you approved my entry to the Superbru Champions League pool?

Ozzy - Cameron pishes me right off coming out with bollix like that considering the cuts he's making. I thought the same about his involvement in the paralympics. The paralympians were fantastic ambassadors for Britain, but the government will still cut disability benefits and have shut down several Remploy factories. Anyway, I won't drag on the politics...
I'm watching Derren Brown's Svengali show on Channel 4. I saw the show in Cardiff. It was superb. I really didn't know what to expect but I really enjoyed it and was genuinely amazed. He's got a clever talent...

Please feel free to ignore this post, I just need to vent some frustration as I have just listened to that smarmy self satisfied Kumquat David Cameron wittering on about how todays events are a stark reminder about the dangers that police officers face every day and that is a unique profession that he values dearly. Yeah, of course you do you Frak bumhole, that's why since April I have bringing home on average £300 less each month than I was before due to your changes to my pay and conditions, and I can look forward to now having to work for an extra 4 years than I previously would have had to in order to get my dramatically reduced pension that I am now paying more for. Very strange when I read that MP pensions will only change for new people onto the scheme, not for existing MP's. soloist.
Two PC's lost their lives today doing their job. A job that they did without fear nor favour. For reasons which are yet unclear they were deliberately lured to an address and blown to pieces. Their colleagues are now having to face the task of remain professional and collating the evidence whilst dealing with their own immediate grief. I salute those officers in GMP as I remember all to well the day last year when I was told of my own friend and colleagues murder, albeit in very different circumstances. The world is changing, and at times not for the better, yet the people in power do nothing to ensure that those entrusted with keeping the public safe are provided with the tools to enable them to do so properly.
Sleep well tonight Mr Cameron, I am certain that you will, as you are not the man who walked in from work this evening to a crying wife who knows that on any given day, it could have been her husbands face appearing on the news.
Rest in Peace PC Fiona Bone and PC Nicola Hughes.
Officers down, never forgotten.
Oh Pete. That was a magnificent post, straight from the heart. Ye are the front-end buffer, of a society that has lost its way badly. Badly funded and abetted by public-school whannkers, with no grip on present or any reality. Other than money or power.
You are our front-line, protecting us from the hordes. Every day you wake up. Thanks for that.
Love you man.

Cari
The best bit with Cameron at the Olympics was at the parade when he did his speech and got polite applause and then got completely upstaged by Boris and had to stand like a spare part at the side of the stage. His face was a picture. I think he better get used to being an onlooker in time for the next election, as he could well be doing a fair bit of it.
I went for 2-1 to Arsenal on Superbru, so hoping this stays scoreline stays as it is!!!

Cariadwr, if you're interested, this was an excellent programme looking at how one of the most famous economists ever might have handled the current crisis: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01mxpzv/Masters_of_Money_Keynes/ I'm not sure that there is really a right answer, and it is sadly true that cuts must be made somewhere (not necessarily where they are being made tho), but this was a very watchable piece.Cari wrote:Ozzy - Cameron pishes me right off coming out with bollix like that considering the cuts he's making. Evening pub, .
Pete, when I heard about the WPC's on the radio today, you were the first person I thought of. You're entitled to the rant mate.
Great work on the SUFTUM initiative too, saw your post on the "Come on my lovers" forum.
Hang in there big guy, we need you.

Boris is (unintentionally) funny. Unlike a polititian, he can't really bulls**t or waffle like they do when they can't answer a question. He just goes "Ummm...errr..." and usually makes himself look stupid.
If anyone wants a bit of entertainment, I'd recommend this show. I forgot how clever it was.

Mate,
Would it seem trite to say, that I am in work Heaven right now pal? It just gets better. Met two aul IBM compadres today, working a floor above me. Getting out on the wrong floor, can be so much fun sometimes. A two-hour lunch-break ensued.
Phhok moi, must watch the CL. I fancy Arsenal to win it against all de odds.
Believe.

Will have to up our game from tonight Gibbo, but as Chelsea showed last year it's not always the best team that wins it, so why not. My traditional yearly double of Arsenal and London Irish to win their respective Premierships is looking like money down the drain once again though!
And glad to hear your enjoying being back in the world of work.
And to all, thanks for your support guys, is appreciated.
I have to add, I love Boris Johnson. He is hilarious. he is one of those people who don't seem to have that valve that most have in their brain, which when you think something, checks to see if it is ok to say. With Boris, it all just comes out and not always in a particularly coherent manner. Priceless.

You reckon As? Let's have a wee non-virtual chat about it sometime. I paid for my kids wild & varied education heavily, all the way through, but... I didn't isolate their brains from reality.

That's the pure definition of a good Public School education. The man IS a buffoon, but the Londoners love it. They voted the fool back in. Its all in the accent and the attitude. And subliminal servitude.
Anyway, enough of heavy-speak. Really enjoying my bestest BF - Neil Oliver, on IPlayer - on the Vikings. I'd roide im just for his intelligence and lilting voice alone. Must be public-school educated.

I'll have you know, I fancied non public-school Maggie Thatcher - in a sexual way, when she was in her prime.

Now we have taken the pish enough in the Pub, how was that trip with the kids As? Sounded superb. You took them to their Grandad's crook? This, to me, is essential education. Cant be bought.

Guys and gals its been an emotional few days. Thank you so much for all your kind words and prayers since Saturday night. Tomorrow will be horrible for all concerned but god willing we'll make it through. Truth be told I'm still supressing the whole thing and haven't slept much in the last 2 nights. Ran into 2 of nevin's closest friends at work today, who will be carrying him tomorrow. He usually has a wide grin and constantly laughs and jokes around. Today he could hardly speak. Was preparing to leave my house for yesterday and 3 hearses drove past. That more than anything else really brought it home to me. The details of what happened are still emerging, but they are irrelevant. Tomorrow we bury a friend, a brother, a father, a son, a grandfather and an uncle.
Johann Muller's words today were brilliant. A truly fitting tribute. The last paragraph brought me close to tears. I say 'close to' because I suspect I'm saving mine for tomorrow.

It must kill the Tories inside though. Every thing they are trying to suppress, he is acting out, in the raw, full-frontal and front-stage. Its hilarious.

Can someone explain something to me please. I've been reading about the new education reforms what's his face is bringing in to replace the current GCSE exams, and how the number of top grades (A* per what ever its called) awarded will be restricted.
This confuses the hell out of me, how can you put a cap on a grade?? Surly if someone deserves a grade they should get it. "i was going to give you an A but is already given two out ao I couldn't give another one"
It's nonsense

As we are on education - I turned down an MA in Politics from a Russell Group university (Queens Belfast) and instead I'm doing an MSc in Software Development at a much lesser university because they offered me a scholarship (no fees). Starting to have regrets though

So all 4 brothers and Mrs Burgess are here now. Redfern had a bit of a rough reputation for a long time but in the last 10 years or so it has been spruced up. They would be living by the sea; somewhere like Coogee I'd say - 10 mins to the training ground but much nicer environment for a family.
Big match for the Bunnies this Saturday. If they beat Canterbury, it will be their first GF since 1971.

What are you regretting though Dodger, the University choice or the course topic? Clearly they are two very different topics.... although the Office politics is a good skill for the Software industry.....

The dilemma was this - Do I go to a better University and do what I really like (Politics) which would cost me about £4k in fees. Or go to a lesser university and do a course for free as I was offered a scholarship and the course is much better for employment prospects, but also involves 3 hours of travel a day. In the end I went with the latter as I just couldn't afford to turn down a scholarship which saved me £4k and give good employment prospects. When I say regret I suppose I mean I'm a bit rueful not to be going to Queen's, but I might do another Masters there next year anyway.

Yes I see your dilemma but the bolded part is the key I suppose, you can always do the other Masters and you haven't lost much other than a year and travel costs, which isn't much in the greater scheme.

Hoog, I'm surprised it's taken you this long to realise that the world is now operated by numbers. Numbers tell the powers that be everything. No need for flair or ingenuity in this world these days. Just deliver the 'numbers' - quality is no longer necessary.

Morning all, just checking in on my train to Gloucester. Nice and sunny so far.
The exam system is caught betwixt and between. If everyone is getting A*s then they're completely useless as an indicator for universities who want the most able students for tough courses. Down the lower end they allow school leavers to show prospective employers that they are capable of a certain standard (eg can count to 10 wearing shoes and mittens or can read and understand safety instructions). And (assuming teaching methods are improving over the years) grade inflation is inevitable. So the exams need to cover off the basics, then force the top students to show off what they really know. Which isn't easy.

Question, and I know the answer is no but I'll ask anyways....
Is there any way to supress those advertisments which flash across the top of the screen?

Morning pub. Hot water, honey and lemon for me please.
Think I've peed my agency off this morning that 'oh!' and then a brief silence kind of gives it away. Tough. I've got virtually no voice so couldn't do half my job anyway, and I'm infectious. I'd be really popular if I decimated their already minimal staff

But we still havnt covered the fact that people will miss out on the top grade they deserve due to a quota system.
It's almost* like your whole school life is coming down to where your paper is in the pile when being corrected. On top, happy days, on bottom, good luck mate.
* when I say almost I actually mean, for definite
