Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The Pub has made its way to The Patch - a tiny rugby union* community nestled in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne in the week before the AFL Grand Final.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Willie Falloon, Joel Conlon, Peter Murchie, Lewis Jetta, Lance "Buddy" Franklin and Frazier Climo.

Any chance this can be the next pub?

Guys: for the next pub can I suggest we go for a celebration pub rather than a memorial one, with photos on the wall of rugby/sports stars who lost their live's too early?

Just a suggestion and hope I don't offend anyone.

And by all means come down and watch the Sarries....I'll give you a warm welcome for sure, plus we're looking to play Illford Wanderers soon.

OZZY - hope your day off wasn't too stressful OK

1st XV - Whiteheads (Newport)

2nd XV - Llandaff (Cardiff)

Both sides are at home so it should be a good night back at the clubhouse (pub)

Get yourself down to the 'Diff. Roath Park would be great for the kids playgrounds, open space, swans, geese and ducks. You'd be more than welcome at Penfro Towers too thumbsup

Rodders - I saw that meteor shower! Me and my Dad were driving back from Y Parc and it was so clear and bright, for one second we thought it was a plane on fire or something, just so so bizarre, it disappeared really quickly too. Amazing to see though.

And morning all. got to attempt to write my match report up now and I'm still absolutely tampin', me thinks I shall have to re-write it a fair few times Whistle

Morning all.

Dreamer, you could always ask if the O's gave Derek Bevan a gold watch Wink

I was impressed to see such a refereeing legend being used as TMO, but shocker of a decision.

Hang on, am I agreeing with a Welsh complaint about a ref? Doh Wink Run

Just seen the scoreline in the Ospreys match and heard about Priestlands dire day with the boot.

Why can Scarlets just not bring a mental edge to their good tactics and good ability.

Don't know if it's mental edge with Priestland or not Stag. He's always been a bit of a wobbly kicker but at around 70% like not too bad. he changed his kicking style going into the last 6N's (don't know if that's jenks' influence) and since then it's just been simply awful.

Just feel so gutted for our forwards coz they worked their absolute arses off to get us down into a position to win a penalty and Priest just couldn't kick them.

if both sides had got their kicks going into the 71st minute (before any tries had been scored) it would have been 21-12 to Scarlets. Whole different game then. Ah well.

Is there nobody else who can kick?

You just cant afford to leave points behind you. So many games are being decided now by 5-6 points. Thats just two missed kicks.

Sometimes I think kicking coaches are a complte waste of time. We have a similar problem with Tom Homer. Never had a kicking coach, had a ragged old technique and was an 85% kicker who notched them comfortably from 55-60 yards.

Irish got Barry 'The Boot' Everitt in over the summer as a kicking coach and now he can't hit a cows orse with banjo. Looks lovely in the way he runs up to it now, but that's feck all use if it don't go between the sticks.

Penfro, am definitely gonna come to Cardiff on a Saturday for a Sarries match this season. Is there a fixture list on the club website? (Do you have a website?)

Coming back to something you said on another thread Dreamer. Was Ospreys actually that dirty. I haven't heard anything else of it.

From your description Ospreys should have had a absolute minimum of three red cards with several players facing lenghty bans.

Not really. We had Aled Thomas on the bench but that would have meant taking Priestland off, and in all other aspects of his game he was playing v v well. It's whether or not we take the risk of dropping him and hope that against the bigger teams that Aled can get the backline working as well (although to be fair he did do a lovely job against Leinster Wink )

Rather worryingly in the warm up we has Sanjay practising kicks at goal! Shocked

Mind you, going by the kick club thing on scrum v we should get Rhodri Jones and Ken Owens kicking - they were by far the better ones!

It's just really annoying because missed kicks cost us last season too. And now the more Rhys misses, the more pressure he's going to be under. I just wish he'd go back to his old style of kicking.

in the first 20 mins they did 3 high tackles and tehre was the forearm smash on Fenby's face.

Definitely should have seen a couple of yellows for it. Think the ref warned AWJ 4 times for foul play but they didn't get carded until there was 90 seconds left on the clock.

Can't put into words how frustrating it is as a supporter to see foul play go unpunished. Not saying we were angels like, Sanjay should have seen yellow for pulling back an O's player when they were on a break, but we certainly didn't resort to foul play like they did. Just thought it was an aspect of the game the ref really bottled out of. Tis a derby, tis always going to be a fiery one between the O's and Scarlets and he just completely bottled out of making the big call.

If he'd made the decision to yellow one of them in the first 10 mins like he should have, the game could have gone on to be a lot calmer, less blydi off the ball stuff and then more rugby could have been played. Then again, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the O's didn't want to happen Whistle

Were the high tackles penalised?

Did the linesmen flag any foul play?

What about the two lads who punched Earle "three times directly into the face". That is VERY serious foul play. Was it as bad as it sounds.

The high tackles were penalties, yes.

One lad punched Earle (two were holding him), they weren't the most viscous of punches I've ever seen but they were still punches. They were off the ball as well, so the ref probs didn't see it but the linesman spoke on his mike at the time (didn't flag it so perhaps he was talking about something else).

Strange to see no yellow for the high tackles. Referees work usually on an Ask, Tell, Penalise system unless of course the foul play is more severe. Sounds like a yellow card was avoided.

"Alun, as captain will you have a chat and sort it out. Tackle is too high and theres a bit of niggle"

"Alun, we spoke earlier and nothing has changed. As captain, address this immediately or else you will force me to address it"

"Alun, you have been unable to control the team so I will, yellow card".

Sounds like the Ospreys got lucky on that one.

Think the biggest bad call was what Kiwi referred to earlier Stag but oh well. It wasn't what cost us the game. We put ourselves in the position to win it but simply couldn't convert the chances. That to be honest, is what's really pished me off about it.

Fenby was crossing for a try and I think it was Stowers came in to "tackle" him when on replays it was clearly a swinging forearm smash to the face which caused Fenby to drop the ball.

The result from the ref and the TMO was that it was a knock on and a scrum to O's, when it really should have been a penalty try for us and a yellow for the O's. Not sure there's a lot of people who could argue with that.

Ha not if Priest kept missing his kicks Stag!

Dunno if it would have changed it, we'll never know now, fact is we could have, perhaps should have won it anyway and didn't. Like I said the the Ospreys got their tactics spot on, best they've played all season. Duncan had a right stormer for them as well, and Ryan made a massive difference when he came off the bench.

Afternoon All coffee

Last night's derby was typical - loads of stuff going on all over the place, controversial match official decisions, but hey it's a win for the O's and a badly needed one at that. I dread to think where we'd be if we'd lost that. I think our backs let us down, all the hard work was done at the front and then... picard We could've got two additional tries had the backs not fluffed them. Ah well...Biggar's kicking was superb last night though, fair play to him. His second penalty kick (the one that curved around in between the posts) was sublime.

I think Priestland was wearing Niall O'Connor's boots... Wink

Screamer of a catch in the T20 by Sri Lanka.
Only a 7 over game because of rain. SA batting. 27/2 after 3 overs.

Bulldogs will play the Storm in the NRL GF next Sunday after demolishing Souths 32-8 this evening.

The Bunnies were gone after Adam Reynolds did his hamstring after about 30 mins and were leading 8-6. From then on it was all the Bulldogs. 2 quick tries to Perret and White just before HT saw them go into the break leading 16-8. In the 2nd half, forwards like James Graham, Aiden Tolman, Frank Pritchard and Greg Eastwood made good yards, running up through holes and either scored themselves or offloaded it out wide for some spectacular tries.

Hawthorn survived a late comeback from Adelaide to win 97-92 and will meet Sydney next Saturday in the AFL Grand Final.

There is still more than enough time for us to implode and concede 40 points here!!!

The result from the ref and the TMO was that it was a knock on and a scrum to O's, when it really should have been a penalty try for us and a yellow for the O's. Not sure there's a lot of people who could argue with that.

That was definitely a penalty-try. No question.

But O's fully deserved that game Dreamer. They wanted it more. And Scarlets forgot to play the game that won them the 1st 3 in-a-row. You said they might bottle it in a derby. Well they did. That's a mindset they will have to overcome.

Having said that, I wouldn't like to be playing Scarlets next week. I'd expect a strong reaction from them.

Bath just haven't got the decision making to put Irish under pressure Pete, they're still too predictable. You'll be good for your first win I reckon. OK

The Pub has made its way to The Patch

Afternoon all. Bit busy at the moment, but I did a double take when i read this.

Years ago I used to live in a town just east of Gloucester - a nice regency town where they hold a major Irish horse-racing festival every March. When we first went house-hunting I asked the obvious question when given town maps by estate agents. Every single one of them had some large areas which were blank*. Absolutely nothing in them; and no indication what might be there. Then my hubby told me that that was where he would be working.

In those far off days when secrecy was permitted and places like that just simply didn't exist and more importantly they were not spoken of we took to naming it "The Patch". This was because all civil servants are vegetables, some vegetables are grown in a cabbage patch and hence our moniker for it. I still assume when someone speaks of The Patch they are referring to that place in that town.

* This was a then secret government establishment which had taken over from Bletchley and had something to do with communications. And the town is Cheltenham - lovely place.

Anyway, off to walk the dog.

Hope everybody's results are as they wish them today.
