The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to The Patch - a tiny rugby union* community nestled in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne in the week before the AFL Grand Final.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Willie Falloon, Joel Conlon, Peter Murchie, Lewis Jetta, Lance "Buddy" Franklin and Frazier Climo.

BTW the thing most people forget when we get into this discussion as usual.
It is NOT that any player gives less than 100% for Ireland. But rather for the provinces they seem to be able to give 110%.

Sorry folks, I didn't mean to light the blue touch paper. When someone like BOD speaks like this I thought it was worth a mention.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
I have been told in the past not to pay much attention to players quotes on the subject.
Rory Best - “Its hard to know why Ireland have underperformed because it’s the same group of players as when they play for their provinces. There are a lot of good points when we come together, but because the three groups are so competitive sometimes it takes a wee bit of time to get into it. Its like being with the enemy and there are splits within the camp”
Andrew Trimble - “I find the Six Nations to be a really good experience, I enjoy being down there, being part of it, the intensity is high and you’re tested to a very high level, but there’s really nothing like playing for Ulster. It’s great to be back and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season in a white shirt”

If you read the whole interview there's a lot of other interesting stuff.
It's one of the best I've read for a while.

Do you think our interwoven system plays a part.
In November there is a four week period in which top class players will be involved in domestic league rugby, European rugby and international rugby.
How does one manage to get properly focused.

Have to say BOD is looking quick and sharp so far this year. Considering how poor Leinster have been that's no mean feat......

Do you know I actually haven't seen even one minute of a Leinster match so far this year.

Well Stag if BOD is suggesting that those lads are trying harder for Leinster then we are feiced......

Stag, I don't want to come across as a smort-orse, but one is what you expect from a sporting professional for either club or country, and the other is not achievable.
Perhaps that common "misconception" is more actual factual than many would like to believe?

Hows Peej doing anyway, long time no chat big man. Spent today trying to encourage a group of Irish teens to visit the Rec as part of their rugby tour.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Why stag?? It's a crap stadium, full of bath folk.

They wanted to take in a Premiership match and are playing a school in Bath the same day.

I know you're not Stag, I was thinking of other people regarding the "misconception".
'Tis all OK with me and mine, I hope you and yours are the same bud. I admire your encouragement of the young 'uns to visit The Rec, it is after all, the last bastion of amateur rugby in an otherwise fully professionalised game.
I'm still out on the current coaching set-up, it's way too early to judge them and their efforts working with a squad that they inherited fait accompli, but the business of letting Barkley go to Racing, is, so far, a black mark in ye olde copybook.
On the other hand, yer Munster boys are looking like they're up for the provincial bragging rights, what's with the forwards letting the ladies have a go anyway?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Ah the place has run amock Peej.
Denis Leamy, David Wallace, Jerry Flannery, John Hayes and Alan Quinlan all hung up their boots. Paul O'Connell is on the long term injury list as per usual and our other international forwards Donnacha Ryan and Peter O'Mahony aren't back yet.
I can picture Donncha O'Callaghan sitting in the team tactics sessions looking around the room bewildering looking for the usual suspects to call to keep it tight.
We even gave the captaincy to a winger. Its all very different in Munster these days. Yet you'll still get some stupid pundit around Christmas when we play Saracens who'll describe it as "two teams who play a tough attritional game".
Reputations are very hard to shake in rugby.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Reputations are nothing but yesterday's cliches Stag.
I can only dream of Bath keeping it tight and making the most of what little possession they get, in the vain hope that they might excel themselves this season and somehow finish in the top six.
I've supported them for the best part of 35 years, lived vicariously of the "good times" and now suffer from their failure to reach a level of consistent mediocrity.
I rather fancy Thomond Park will be a formidable place for any team to visit this season (again), I get the impression that the grit is still there when needed, but the ability to attack from deep and almost at will, gives any wannabee challengers serious food for thought.
The marker is well and truly down I reckon.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Bore da pawb / good morning all, back at my desk after a lusher-than-lush holiday in Lanzarote. Temperatures in the low 30s all week, then I arrived at Gatwick at 2.30 AM yesterday morning, got the train around 7ish and shivered all the way home. I spent yesterday wearing a t-shirt, two jumpers and a hoody and I was still cold.
Also, my car wouldn't start; I'd joked to my dad, if he moved it, not to flood the engine like he did last time. Lo and behold he'd flooded the engine (and the battery was flat too). My brother-in-law came over with some jump leads and after about twenty minutes we managed to get it started. Bump starting is actually quite fun.
So anyway, the Rabo table is beginning to take a familiar shape from a Dragons perspective.

Morning all.
Some school was on NZ breakfast television because the kids have written a published book. The reporter asks an 8 year old boy "so do you want to be an author when you grow up?" And the kid replies "Nah I want to be an All Black."
Stupid reporter.

Stag, sorry for dipping out of this convo last night.
You seem to mix up this commitment thing with performances. I just don't see how you measure this 100% against 110%. Can you give me any instances where you could say this players commitment was less than that players?
No need to apologize Hound. It was a good article and a thoroughly good read.

Best talks about under performing, not under committing. I would be more concerned with his last sentence.

I feel that Ireland are always uber-committed and totally pysched when they face England or maybe ahead of a match like Australia last September. A lot of the rest of the time I do not get the same sense of urgency from them and it can feel a bit like going through motions.
I liken this to the way the provinces are with league and Heineken Cup. Usually I see greater motivation for the provinces in all their Heineken Cup matches.
Maybe I am indeed wrong. But I certainly dont think that we have seen them on equal footing and I think too many people don't like the idea and just prefer to say its Kidneys fault.

Morning everyone
Question for you all,
If you move somewhere and end up living there longer than you lived in your original country, can you still really claim to be a citizen of your original country??
For example. If you've lived in England longer than you ever lived in Scotland, can you really still claim to be Scottish??

I think if you lived in England for most of your life and have English kids and support an English rugby, and your English missus ran an English gastro pub then you aren't Scottish anymore!

Blydi miserable today. Driving to Belfast there were fields upon fields under water. Poor cattle and sheep were huddled behind hedges for whatever shelter they could muster. In one field there were about 30 sheep stranded in the corner with the rest under water. I hope they aren't still there this evening at home time.

Hoog must only have a couple of years before he jumps on an English team bandwagon, what with the "English" foster family and all that. RWC 2015 anyone?
