The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to The Patch - a tiny rugby union* community nestled in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne in the week before the AFL Grand Final.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Willie Falloon, Joel Conlon, Peter Murchie, Lewis Jetta, Lance "Buddy" Franklin and Frazier Climo.

Does it play second row for Munster?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Morning all,
I saw the highlights from the Munster game. All of the tries really were fantastic and it looks like we are going to be a far more entertaining team to follow this season than we have been for quite a while. Looks like Zebo could be a big part of that as well.
Had a really good time with my parents and the extended family on my dad's side this past weekend. Feel incredibly blessed to be a part of it.
Just something that made me laugh from when were walking around Chester. After being in a glass shop, my dad kept repeating about how much he liked glass. And as we walked by a jewellery shop, he also had a look at all the watches. I joked with my mother about his expensive loves and he said the most expensive love for him was her. Which she replied to by saying that was an expensive love she approves of but those other two are the competition. Just made me laugh, especially seeing that smug grin on my mum's face.

Morning Munsty. Glad you had a good time with the parents. I'm a bit like your dad I suppose. I like a glass as well. Preferably full though
Munster looked good on Saturday night for sure. I'd be worried that Zebo only wants to tackle around the shoulders.

Well I didn't see the full game but I'm trusting this new management team and hopefully they will sort out any kinks.
I really hope that they get Zebo involved more at different points. He has some fantastic skills. Exciting times ahead anyway.

It was a good but not great performance Munsty. In attack we were very good but the scrum was a shambles and the defence was questionable at times.
We held up two Dragons tries and they were never quite properly killed off. Being honest Dragons gettting a bonus point for tries scored was a real possibility.
That being said I loved the way we are using our strenghts and I think that once Donncha Ryan, Paul O'Connell, Peter O'Mahony and CJ Stander come into the team we will be looking much stronger.
BTW Paddy Butler had a great match. I think he is going to be a great player. Lots of exciting young backrows at the minute.

Evening pub. They are flying the RAF flag outside the local community hall. Must be Battle of Britain week. There used to be a Spitfire doing a fly past over Bentley Priory (home of Fighter Command during the war), but that stopped when the Government closed the place about 3 years ago.
Nice to see everyone's sorting out their Euro trips. I am sweating on whether my leave for Migliano - a Mon & Tue - will still be OK. Training for the launch of a new system has been put back; it was due to start this week.
People have already had previously approved leave rescinded. They are now very unhappy.

Sometimes I hate owning my own home, and don't get me started on insurance companies and what constitutes 'storm damage'! Still, I have my health and my family even if my bank account is going to be incredibly lighter shortly, so can't complain to much.
Hope all are well here.

Someone's given me a copy of today's Irish Independent. Interesting interview with BOD, where (amongst other things) he's saying that Irish players need to put country above Province. That's the headline of the article.
The fact that he feels the need to say that is the interesting bit.
I'm surprised that there isn't an article on it in either the club or international section.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Nah, thats not true. I think people do think it's an issue.
I just hope we don't end up getting that way about it. Province is above country now and thats wrong. But your country is definitely not more important than your province either. They should be on an equal footing.
In my heart I can't say if Ulster were bad and Ireland were brilliant, Ireland would make up for it and I'd be happy. If the reverse were true I'd be content with Ulsters success no matter how bad Ireland were. Ulster are closer to my heart, no point in denying it. I'm closer to that team. Ireland is a corporate entity it costs an arm and a leg to go and see more than once in a blue moon whereas Ulster are my TEAM. Week in, week out. You don't need connections to the old boys club get a ticket. You don't have to listen to stupid partisan debates in the run up to a game. The players give everything they have as one, for the shirt and the fans support them with unconditional passion. How can Ireland match that? None of that is true of the national team, quite the opposite.
All that could be changed, if the IRFU could be changed. The real problem is the players feel the same way about their provinces and about the national team. As long as we're winning Heineken Cups, they won't have the hunger to succeed at international level to the extent they need. They are fulfilling their most important career ambitions whilst Ireland drift on in 8th place.
The problems in the running of the national team are so deep-seated, the players are becoming as apathetic about playing for Ireland as the fans are apathetic about watching them do it. I genuinely find it hard to care now.

Hound/Stag, having just read that I have to say that O'Driscoll himself didn't put Country before Province when he quite clearly jeopardized his fitness for the summer tour by having surgery a eight days before the HC Final and playing when he clearly wasn't ready. The normal recovery period is three weeks for the procedure he went through.

Well, for players on both teams, it was the biggest game of the season including all test matches.
I kind of feel like it should be on even footing with test matches- not necessarily bigger, but if an all Irish Heineken Cup final isn't seen as every bit as important as a full international test what is?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, The Patch
Are we better off picking hungry players.
We saw an uncapped quartet get called up due to injury today. Although not selected in the original squad a few days ago the grouping of:
09 Paul Marshall
10 Ian Madigan
11 Craig Gilroy
12 James Downey
would be extremely motivated to perform for Ireland.
You look at a guy like Stephen Ferris or Rory Best or Tommy Bowe. They have won the Six Nations, toured with the Lions, played in the Rugby World Cup but they have had to endure watching Munster and Leinster share the Heineken Cup spoils. That will be a massive motivating factor for them for Ulster.
When they go playing Scotland or Argentina is the same passion there?
I talked to yer man I work for about it recently and he said that he was so pumped in every moment for Ireland. He said it was so special. But then again he only played 13 times internationally in his whole career, mainly off the bench.

Stag - as captain of Ireland he obviously needs to be listened to. Winning the HC puts Irish rugby in a good place. There should be a lot more coming from that.

I would say there aren't three more committed players pulling on a green shirt this season, irrespective of the opposition.
