The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Taihape
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Taihape - The Gumboot Capital of the World!
http://www.taihape.co.nz/
We also welcome our newest member, Amber ...who no doubt will have an interest in those boots!
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Aaron Smith, Topsy Ojo, Jason Shoemark, Tom Rees, Gonzalo Garcia, Leo the Leinster Lion and Lalakai Foketi up on the wall.

Heard a radio quiz on the way in to work today.
The girl needs to beat the previous score of 8 questions.
She has answered 7 and is given a true or false question. She says "I dont know. Pass"

Question, will Kidney pick Strauss for the Ireland squad this Autumn? He’s clearly one of the best 3 hookers in Ireland and he’s qualified now.

No he'll pick Best, Cronin and Varley. Strauss might get a free IRFU tracksuit if he's a good boy though.

Speaking of quiz questions, this was the tie-break question I had at the Dolphin Inn pub quiz in Lanzarote (the first of three times we won it ):
There's only one other word in the English language that can be made from the letters of the word STARVED. What is that word?

Is "adverts" a word, or just an abreviation of "advertisements" these days?

Shouldn't that be Sportsdirect.com@StJames'sPark?
Can I just say what annoyed me most about the TMO's decision-making at Parc y Scarlets last Friday? It was that, once he'd concluded that the penalty had been missed, he was content to award the try after viewing it from just one angle, an angle that had Gareth Maule between the ball and the camera. How on BOD's green earth can you, as a TMO, award a try when you can't possibly see whether the ball has been grounded?!
To quote C. Montgomery Burns: incompetent boobery.

Awful decision to leave out Welford Road, especially for the Walkers Stadium or whatever that place is called.

Ah, you know how this game is played by now Mick. Irish coaches under pressure and their siege mentality leads to excessive player loyalty. This is history repeating itself. Don't expect too many new faces.

Luckless,
I just saw it on Scrum V. He looked at it immediately after he decided it had not gone over, but then for some reason Nigel decided to stop it and ask that question afterwards where it seemed to me the TMO was just looking at it again to confirm what he already knew. It certainly was a try.
Anyway, if I was the Dragon's coach, I'd be furious at my players for completely turning off!

I would say he is far more deserving on the basis he would play for Ireland ahead of South Africa if given the choice.

But how can you say 'it was certainly a try' when the player's body was blocking your view of the grounding? Surely if you can't see it, you can't give it?

Ah yeah Notch, par for the course at this stage.
Did anyone catch the podcast from newstalk last week where Gerry Thornley not only suggested that Kidney was doing a good job and should be left in place to see out his contract (fair enough) but that he’s the best candidate for the job and should be retained with a new contract thereafter. I needed something to give me the impetus to stop reading print journalism* altogether, and that was it.
*I still read my bro in laws articles in the Sun, but that doesn’t count.

From watching it again, maybe there was a different angle in the live feed, but you can see him getting downward pressure on the ball.

- Any Reason I Can't Award a Try? = "Im pretty happy but Im just double checking" = Inconclusive video evidence is a Try

Not at all Luckless. 11th is above all my wildest dreams. Ill be on the bandwagon as long as we maintain these lofty heights
Just saying it happens. We has a situation in the Munster game where referee said that Munster knocked on in act of scoring a try. Munster beg him to use the TMO. Referee says no I've seen the knock on - no reason for TMO. Replays show no knock on.
Poop happens.

Suppose it evens out the first try which was a forward pass and the ref didn't see it.

Yea exactly. Swings and roundabouts. The referee was far from the reason we lost that match.
I think the game swung in a two minute O'Gara v Sexton battle. Leinster winning 20-14. O'Gara with a fairly gettable kick the chance to make it a 3 point margin - hits the post. 90 seconds later Sexton nails his penalty chance - instead of being 20-17 it is now 23-14 and Leinster start to get momentum and turn the screw.
IMO this mini battle decided the winner of the game.
Im happy enough overall with how the team did.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Taihape
Munsty, Gareth Maule almost certainly grounded the ball. The point is that unless the TMO has X-ray vision, there's no way he could have seen that from the camera angle presented to him. And, of course, if shouldn't have got to that point anyway.

Yeah, good call. I think BOD scored shortly after Sexton made that kick to bring it to 30-14. Both teams just playing for BPs at that stage.

I want ROG gone. He got flattened in the build up to O'Driscolls try. As in steamrolled by McFadden who ran straight over him like Lomu and Mike Catt.

Glas, an inferior playmaker to Keatley too. A far greater threat and got the backline moving and attacking Leinster. Once he came on we were a different side.

Being able to defend his own space should be a bare minimum requirement. Whatever about being a good defender ala Wilko.
