The Stratospheric Supersonic Dew Drop Inn, Roswell, New Mexico
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to "sleepy" Roswell New Mexico, take off point for the first ever supersonic free-fall this week.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Felix Baumgartner and Chris Budgen up on the wall.

My old netbook used to go into hibernation if I didn't have it plugged in.

But I fear that the lack of inclusion of those topics runs us into a danger of sanitising modes of discussion on important topics. So what are the moral limits of markets? Is paying to get ahead in a queue economically acceptable as th best way to clear the market or is it ethically unpalatable cos other considerations are equally valid? Thoughts would be appreciated, along with examples. Love you all, long time
I agree. Apologies for raising such a sensitive subject. I had no idea it would take off the way it did.
Solid win for Ulster tonight. Double header against the saints is going to be key in deciding whether or not we can manage a home qf. Very hopeful.

Try changing these to never.

I'm sans battery so that's probably the reason. Thanks Notch. <dressed orange>

I wouldn't apologise, Willy. It wouldn't have led to a discussion if people thought it was 'off limits'.

Just finished watching the match in time warp.
A win is a win and we knew it would be a dog fight.
Can't believe how unfortunate Glasgow have been with their injured back division.
WillyG,
I don't think anyone got hot under the collar earlier. It was just an honest and civilised exchange of views I thought. If we can't discuss real stuff in here in a sensible and adult fashion after all this time I'd be pretty disappointed. We don't have to agree with each other to remain a bunch of people who like each other, take care of each other and enjoy talking to each other. Sure that's what friends are, no?

Hi Wava.
How are you mate? Still at the dining room table or have the clan gone to bed now?
I'm just about to get this job on the NW Rail link... confidentialty deed poll signed and awaiting tender docs. Huge project. Also some other residential work in the pipeline... I've been very busy lately with about 5 or 6 projects and the Japanese machine tool biz is also picking up.
Some huge mining projects on here and they've finally discovered that it might be better to invest in plant & equipment in Australia and make some of the components here (one guy wants to make crusher machines). Seems as though there is a fair bit of money being thrown around at the moment.

I'll keep you in the loop.
Big, highly paid OH&S jobs in mining but it is gruelling work and you get literally 'burnt out' after a couple of years.
It's best to be based in the city somewhere and fly out for short trips to sites interstate, etc... or even better; work on sites in the metro areas or near the seaboard.

That (the NW of Aus) is remote territory Lb. Isn't there an area up there called the Bungle Bungles? Bill Bryson touched on it in his book Down Under (great read btw - funny and very informative).
There is so much of Australia that has never been trodden on by humans.
Amazing country.

The Bungle Bungles are about 1000 km north east of Karratha, Hound. That's closer to Broome and Derby.
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Western_Australia_location_map.svg&page=1 (to the right of Broome on map)
The main mining and infrastructure activities are centered around Port Hedland and the railways to the mines which are 300-400 km south of the coastal towns in the Pilbara region - it's the hottest part of Australia. A town called Marble Bar had 160 consecutive days over 37.8 deg C (100 deg F).
Even on the coast it's hot and dry but it's not an attractive coastline in parts. It's quite dangerous in fact. You can't just walk up to a beach and have a swim.... there's huge salt pans, flooded areas, swamps, dangerous estuaries, crocs, sharks.
Yet it has very expensive real estate with huge rents being demanded for accommodation (even more than in Sydney - $2500 (1700 GBP)/week, house prices ave around $1m (680,000)!) basically a slapped up tin shed with all mods cons.... but a horrible isolated lifestyle and in a very oppressive climate. I'd go mad in less than a week out there.

Like I said Lb - it's an amazing country.
That coastline sounds like Southend, with the crocs and sharks infesting the pubs.

I've taken enough chances in similar pubs on the east coast and survived but the west is still a big unknown and you'd feel really cut off from 'civilisation' out there in the west. Also some tension/jealousy between locals and newly arrived contractors, workers, etc.
There's this culture of heavy drinking and gambling too I've heard (there's nothing else to do apparently)
so it's an even more unappealing way of life.

Good morning all lurkers ... better put the on and some thick toast, bacon, and OJ and/or cranberry juice.

Bad day to be a Leeds fan. Shocking incident last night. The scumbag who did it should be hung out to dry. Probably thought he got away with it at the time. But the cameras followed his lovely face all the way back up into the stands. That'll make for a pleasant surprise when he wakes up this morning.

What happened Willy?
First ever professional football derby in Sydney just kicked off (Syd FC v West Syd Wanderers). Great atmosphere. They're calling it another 'silvertails' v 'fibros' rivalry already. East/white collar v west/blue collar. Also del Pietro v Shinji Ono

Obviously he'll get done, but Leeds should get a huge fine and some sort of attendance punishment as he wasn't the only one on the pitch (though what he did was far worse).
Awful news for Hoani MacDonald. I wish there was some way us Dragons support could send a message to him.

So soon after the Spence tragedy, another rugby player is fighting for his life. Hoani MacDonald (ex-Dragons and Highlanders) had a cardiac arrest during a game and is in a medically induced coma. Here's hoping he pulls through.

Morning All.
I haven't read any sports news today so I wasn't aware of what happened to MacDonald. Hope fully he'll make a full recovery very soon.
Risca - perhaps the Dragons message board/Twitter/Facebook will allow the Dragons fans to send messages?
Going to watch the Oz v NZ match at 11 online. I went straight to bed after the Ulster game last night. Slept like a log. My strained/sprained (not sure which) wrist was killing me when I got up. I have had to resort to wearing a support on it which makes me cack handed.

Thanks Cari. Looks like there is zero chance of me getting to the Heino final this year ( ) so might get down to this as a consolation.
Given the shambles the National side have been I'm a bit hesitant though. Don't want to waste my time and money watching us box kick our way to another loss .

I hope Hoani MacDonald recovers well - that's terrible news. My thoughts go out to his family, team mates and fans.
Finally. kick off at 9pm here, 8pm in Brisbane. Silly to have an hours time difference between north/south when we have the same longitude.
Thanks Cari.

Oh have faith Rodders - Tommy will be there with his Ulster chums to cheer you up! I'd say even more reason for you to get there if you're unable to make the HC Final.
Breaker - my only complaint about SH rugby is when they get the Local Operatic Society singers drowning out the anthems. Spoils the atmos IMO.
Great start for Oz!

3rd Bledisloe Cup match (Aust-NZ Series). The 2 RC matches are also included. It's a separate trophy.
