The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Amaile
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to Amaile on the eastern-most tip of Upolu Island in Samoa - the first place on Earth to usher in the New Year.
So hop on a hammock and let one of the locals pour a kava down your throat as you are trying to read Tusiata Avia's famous poem: "Wild Dogs Under My Skirt" to the sounds of the Yandell Sister's "Sweet Inspiration" blaring in the background.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of George Pisi, Census Johnston, Paul Williams, Tony Greig, Christopher Martin Jenkins, Mike Nicholls, Babsy and Jeremy Su'a above the bar.

Don't worry about the 'feather' bit - I don't use the whole chicken
Feather and flip = kip.
I don't know the origin of that either, I just know it's the slang term.
I worked on a site with a bunch of London lads about 8/9 years ago and me and a couple of mates .
used to drive them nuts with our inability to get the rhyming slang.
Ow you goin me old China mate? Off up the Apple and stairs with yer April tools? Don't forget to wipe yer daisy boots before you go into flat 4, it's got the rugs in. Oh, and make sure you got yer titfer hat on cause the site agent's about.
It took a good 6 weeks to break em, they was tough cookies.
They finally cracked when we started making up our own "rhyming slang".
Did you take them for a 'Basil'?

It's just started snowing here. I didn't think they'd forecast any for us this early. It's overnight and into Friday that it's all meant to kick off!
Speaking of kick-offs, I hope the Wasps game tonight isn't affected. It should be okay.

Some of it Lucky. Mostly the evening matches.
I think Shane Warne may have played his last 'game'. He's getting suspended again (twice in 3 weeks?) for nominating James Faulkner as captain (code breach). Liz Hurley has lashed out at a journalist at the airport too! She did something silly... hard to see exactly what it was.
she ran over a female journo's foot with her luggage trolley then leaned right in her face... either to say something or pull a face/poke her tongue out. It was kind of tetchy behaviour to say the least.

Same here. The tennis bit.
Why don't you duck out the back and go rub some snow on your forehead? (don't you hate people telling you what you should do!)
I find that tends to cure my headaches.
Otherwise - a small bumble (tumble=trip) to Colorado (Aspen = Aspirin) might do the needlework (pr1ck=trick) for you.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Amaile
There's a fairly decent new 3-part series on here called "Dirty Business: How Mining Made Australia".
It's very well put together with some great archival photos, seemingly realistic re-enactments and some mining industry 'know-alls' chipping in with their tuppence worth. It was quite a feisty place with a surprising mix of nationalities all going for it. Huge fortunes were made literally overnight.
Talking about "Auralia" now - part of WA (south-east portion of the state, centered on Kalgoorlie...which would have been the capital) wanted to secede from the rest of us and form it's own State.
NZ so nearly became part of Australia too. That explains why we have lots of Maori place names here which people assume are aboriginal words. We were in it together against WA. There's still talk of secession even today. Most lately with the new mining tax laws.

The Government is doing it's best to hose it down, Lucky.
WA feels as though it is carrying the rest of Australia economically (mining is only 8-9% of GDP... so the 'East' always emphasises the other 91%) and certain WA mining magnates act like Texans... if you know what I mean.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Amaile
Thing is though - there are still vast areas of untapped wealth both on land and offshore in WA.
At the moment many mining projects are in abeyance... sort of a protest against the Federal Gvt because they don't want to pay the tax.
The crunch will come in the coming months.
Whilst Australia has comparatively low levels of foreign debt, low interest rates, unemployment announced today is 5.4% (was under 5% but there are areas where it's much higher) - this Gvt has gone on a spending spree (that's good for infrastructure investment but the timing seems bad... however cheap money is still available so they take it) and they now want to extract some revenue (from the miners especially!) to pay the interest back. This should spur more plant & equipment investment (tick!) as the miners try to minimise their tax payments - thus putting more pressure back on the Gvt to borrow more. Some sort of bubble if you like... but will it burst?
Also the iron ore price has come off a bit. There is slightly lower Chinese demand but they are playing games. They need our resources badly and there are strict ownership laws which ensure that they can never have a majority ownership of certain 'critical assets'.
Instead, they (the Chinese) are gearing up in other areas like agriculture. They have just bought "Cubby Station" in Qld which not many people are happy about and desperately want to develop the tropical parts of the North into an intensive farming food basket for Asia... which is great.
I've always believed we have needed to import these skills and learn how to use water more effectively.
For instance, in the next few days the equatorial trough dips down right into an area the size of northern Europe and they are saying that over 400mm (16") will fall in about 3 days. All that water either goes (back) out to the Indian Ocean, Timor Sea, Arafura Sea, The Gulf & Coral Sea... or evaporates in the heat.

I'm not sure how 'great' that would be for the ecosystem / native flora and fauna...

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Amaile
There are also huge Protected Areas they can't touch Lucky and also there's the massive areas under Aboriginal Land Title. In both those instances it is exactly that (your reason) being used to stave off development.
The WA Gvt has already signed off on a few major projects but the opposition (Greens, local leaders, etc) are winning so far.
I have no problem with rice or cotton growing though. That's making use of a natural environment and will attract more flora & fauna. Doesn't have to be on a massive scale either - rather smaller controlled areas which would be a fraction of the total land available and be suitable for particular types of farming.
I'm against things like oil refineries in eco-sensitive areas (like the proposed one north of Broome) where there could be a disaster waiting to happen if there was ever a spill. The sea there is so rich and full of marine life.

What are you having for lunch? Anything planned?
So balmy here... it's going to be extremely hot tomorrow apparently.
There was a news bite on the cross training between the Melbourne Rebels and the Melbourne Storm today. Imagine a backline with Cooper Cronk, Beale, Inglis, Ioane, O'Connor, Slater, etc. There are some skills to be shared and used which are applicable to both codes. Quite a clever idea. They also do this type of thing with Aussie Rules teams once in a while.

Afternoon all. Well done Glas on figuring out the Balti.
There are lots of sayings in common use that stem from rhyming slang. An example is 'he's lost his marbles'. That's from marbles and conkers = bonkers.
There's a fairly comprehensive list here...

My favourite is 'berk' coming from 'Berkshire hunt,' rhyming slang for c*nt. It's satisfying when you call someone a berk and they don't get too offended, but you know what it means.
