Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
First topic message reminder :
Basically depth for depth, though I did think we were fine at RB with Richardson, Hardesty and Ogbonnaya but Acho wouldn't have fit the new 3-4 scheme so can't really complain about the deal too much and maybe one of those back ups gets sent off in a trade somewhere during the draft.GSC wrote:Eagles traded Dion Lewis to Cleveland for Emmanuel Acho. Decent backup Lewis, just not as good as Brown.

To be clear: DA's saying #hernandez shot Lloyd three times right after Lloyd got out of the car. Then stood over him & put two in his chest.
What a scumbag. This isn't even just a kid caught up in someone else's mess, these are the actions of a ruthless criminal

Lloyd wasn't murdered he was executed.
Respect to the Kraft family for dealing with this as best they could. Pats took a chance on a kid who had late first/early second ability but slipped to the 4th for a reason.
Don't think those teams who ran a mile from him had this end game in mind, but its been a very costly pick for New England and those who ran a mile when doing pre-draft checks have been proven correct.

As for the on-field ramifications: Patriots reg-sea off DVOA last year with Hernandez: 24.0%. Without Hernandez: 42.4%. I'm surprised too.
Aaron Schatz @FO_ASchatz 4h
Pats were 5-1 without Hernandez last year, beating DEN, IND, BUF twice, and STL, losing to BAL by 1 pt. Avg: 42.3 points.
Weird stats there, especially the last one. Just proves that Gronk really is the difference maker, but Hernandez will be a loss on the field for sure.
If Amendola doesn't work out Brady might as well QB sneak every down

Forget Brady. It's Tebow (and Gostkowski) time.
Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
Patriots will in all likelihood be down around 220 catches, 2500 yards and 22 TDs from their 2012 output on opening day. Bradys still there, and the AFC East is still a walkover but that has to hurt.

I'd have an outside bet on the Dolphins being thereabouts this year - or at least better.
With a month or so to preseason I suppose it's almost time for the divisional polls to go up?

AFC East is no walkover. Dolphins are going to be a decent team. I can't see any big holes on their roster. Bills have a mean as hell front 4 with Dareus and the two Williams to get pressure on Brady. He doesn't like pressure, particularly right in his face where the strength of that D is, IMO. On offense, they are building a dynamic offense that may take time to eork, but CJ Spiller is one of the most exiting players in the league. Jets have a top 5 Defense, and again our strength will be inside pressure which Brady doesn't like.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
Jets have a top 5 defence? I wouldn't be too sure about that. Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver and Houston would probably say something about that. They have made a lot of improvements for sure but they aren't making my top 5 in points per game any way. (Yards they might have a shot as they did decent enough there last year, but that is not the stat people should look at it in my opinion)
I think to have a top 5 defence, you would have a stud who every team would want. I don't know if the Jets have a guy like that

Here's an example of how useless the yards allowed game stat is. In 2011 the Packers (4796) and Patriots (4704) had the worst pass defences by way of passing yards allowed in NFL history. Green Bay went 15-1 and the Patriots were AFC Champions. Their records combined makes 28-4.
Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
It's not even that, you get teams like the Patritos who give up way more yards as they will have a two score lead and teams are forced to fling it. Points allowed is the best way to judge a defence.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
But the PPG stat is also skewed by turnovers on offense, which we've had a lot of. Total defense is the stat you need. I'd put my house on us at least being a top 10 defense. Rex is calling plays plus we're younger and faster. Cromartie and Wilkerson are two players most Defenses would love to have. We have two first round picks and Coples and Demario Davis should take big leaps as they take on starter roles.
There was an article by Bucky Brooks recently that showed the importance if Rex calling plays. I'm on my phone so can't link it right now but he was absolutely right.

Crazy stuff going on with Hernandez, always find it strange how many players are willing to throw away their incredibly lucrative NFL careers.
Not been pointed out on here but Pariots are exchanging Hernandez jersey's for free if it was bought from their shops.

The Supplementary Draft takes place today (Thursday) and there are six possible picks:-
James Boyd, Defensive End, UNLV
Nate Holloway, Defensive Tackle, UNLV
Toby Jackson, Defensive End, Central Florida
Dewayne Peace, Wide Receiver, Houston
O.J. Ross, Wide Receiver, Purdue
Damond Smith, Cornerback, South Alabama
There is an amusing mock draft article here from the NFL website. Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon have been picked up in the last two years and Dewayne Peace and OJ Ross could be the most likely picks this year with possibly the Patriots and the 49ers looking to bolster there receiving corps.

Connor Barth has torn his Achilles' tendon so he'll be missing the entire season. Luckily, Lawrence Tynes was free, so the Bucs have picked him up. Very handy.
