Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
First topic message reminder :
Basically depth for depth, though I did think we were fine at RB with Richardson, Hardesty and Ogbonnaya but Acho wouldn't have fit the new 3-4 scheme so can't really complain about the deal too much and maybe one of those back ups gets sent off in a trade somewhere during the draft.GSC wrote:Eagles traded Dion Lewis to Cleveland for Emmanuel Acho. Decent backup Lewis, just not as good as Brown.

Stinky start by Redskins on both sides of the ball. To be expected though - they've never seen this Eagles offense before and Griffin was always going to be rusty. I was always worried about this game. Still early days though.

Better from the defense there. I think that's how you beat this sort of offense - bring pressure otherwise their momentum will overrun you.

Yeah I've never seen that before. Looks kinda funny! Not sure about doing two plays in a row. Smart players like Orakpo will sniff that right out and whack your QB as happened there.Take it to the house wrote:This Eagles offense is both hilarious and exciting, watching 5 O-lineman diving for cut blocks immediately after the snap
Nice to see the defense working things out a little.
Offense just has to find a way to sustain a drive here!!

Yeah, it's been as bad a performance as you could possibly get. Eagles are playing with a lot of intensity and the Redskins just aren't playing with any. We just haven't been able to get the running game going and when that happens it's bad news for us.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
OK, so with one and a half quarters (what's that? Like three-eighths???) of the game still to go, I'm turning it and heading to bed. Before I do, I'll leave my game notes:-
Griffin is more than rusty. Mechanics look all off. Got to hope it's a confidence thing and that it'll come with game time. Am not really worried about this game or this season, just so long as he can be a franchise QB for years to come. He's mobile enough and is able to take a hit but those throwing mechanics are all over the place.
Redskins running game could not get going at all. That's our bread and butter. If that doesn't work then the offense doesn't work. Was a bad night all around for the O-Line.... pass protection was bad too.
Redskins defense still isn't great. Poor tackling cost us tonight.
Eagles offense looked good and no doubt Chip Kelly can get this scheme to work in the NFL...... they will come up against far better defenses than the Redskins' this season though and it will be interesting to see how they fare in a game where the opposing offense can keep them off the field for a while.
Eagles need to be a bit concerned by the pressure Vick faced tonight. They will play far better pass rushes this season than the Redskins brought tonight.
LeSean McCoy looked great tonight. Back to his best.
Exciting times for Eagles fans.
Can't surely be any worse next week for Redskins fans?? What's that?? We're playing the Packers??? Here's to the 2014 season!!

Well, evidently things must have got better after I went to bed cos it was 33-7 at that point and it finished 33-27. Won't get the chance to see it on Gamepass until tonight but I'll be intrigued to see how much of that comeback was down to us picking up our play and how much was down to Philly taking their foot off the gas and playing softer on defense. Until such time, I'm standing by my 33-7 game notes!

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
Few thoughts
Other games:
- RG3 doesnt trust the knee. Wasn't stepping into throws, didn't look a major threat to run. Without his spark the Redskins offense is limited. Morris was stuffed. be it rust or trust, the Redskins need him back.
- The Eagles gameplan was simple. Get it into the hands of the playmakers. McCoy had 31 rushes. Jackson had 7 catches. Vick had 9 rushes.
- Case of being gassed or letting the foot off the pedal in the 2nd half?
- The Eagles looked like it meant something to them. Wasn't the case last 2 seasons.
Other games:
- The Bucs look youngry. The defense is physical but stupid. Only get 6 losses a season to stay in contention, so throwing games away hurts.
- Looks like the Vikings might be in the QB market this offseason. Jury is just about in on Ponder.
- The Packers might have the worst roster in the NFC North. Its why they've done nothing in the postseason the last 2 years (Joe Webb aside)
- >80m invested in RBs, 1st overall pick at QB, triple crown WR. 7 points. Carolina just can't put it together
- Todd Haley and Big Ben are not a match. By far not the only problem in Pittsburgh however. Might be time for Colbert to fall on his sword.
- New England is in trouble. Against a Buffalo defense down 2 starters in the secondary they struggled. Amendolas already struggling to stay healthy.
- Ndamukong Suh still doesnt get it. His "block" was unnecessary and could've easily resulted in a serious injury. Suspension should be considered

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread Part 3
Tale of two halves. RGIII much better in the 2nd half and run game got some yards, but by then playing catch up so little running. Defense stepped up in the 2nd half but by then it was virtually all over. Seriously though, without the 3 TO's early this would have been a tighter game, even if we looked poor on O to start. Next week is a whole new situation and another week of practice after that game will sharpen RGIII up. D needs better tackling from the secondary. 2 rookies had their moments, but too many whiffs, and broken coverage's. Kelly's O demands you make tackles, so yes, it will be interesting to come up against better tacklers and see what happens.
Good to see things are back to normal with the Texans and the Chargers. One team never gives up on a game and the other forgets there are two halves!

"Looks like the Vikings might be in the QB market this offseason. Jury is just about in on Ponder."
Don't think they'll give up on him yet, if he can bring the consistency that he had for the final 4 games of last season that helped take us to the playoffs he'll be a decent QB.
Main problem in this game was that Detroit had AD under wraps pretty much(after the 78yarder) which meant Ponder faced too many third and longs which he failed at converting. Converted a couple of deep throws too for once though! But overall he was too inconsistent, they'll probably give him till about Game 4 to improve on that imo before considering dropping him.

I wouldn't say we're in trouble, it's just it's gonna take time for Brady to gel with his new guys, and we need to cut out the stupid mistakes.
Really that game should've been wrapped up by the half, but we let them back into it with some silly fumbles. Thought our Defence held up fairly well, need Chandler Jones to step up tho

Nearly missed recording the Skins game, despite setting up the recordings. Suspect that last minute changes on the planner wiped out the planned recordings. Not a Sky issue, more likely Eurosport being behind the curve - last I checked next Monday's game is missing from the schedule.Breadvan wrote:Gutted. I watched highlights of the final two quarters of the Jets/Tampa game, and my god the playcalling from Tampa's OC was so bad, it was putting Freeman constantly in 3rd and longs. Surely must have been obvious to him that the Jets had Martin tied down, so he had to go through the air rather than trying to force it and costing his side. Either he's really stupid or really really stupid

Tbf, Freeman is fairly terrible. PFF graded him worse than Gabbert I think.
Kinda obvious the coaching staff has 0 faith in him anymore, so the gameplan is tailored to not making him do anything hard.

Such is what happens when you don't trust your QB. Run the ball on 1st and 2nd. If it wasn't obvious Schiano doesn't think Freeman is his guy, it should be now. When will Glennon get his chance

Looking at some of the players on the roster... The Buccaneers should at least be challenging the Saints and Falcons for the division. They just never seem to have any consistancy though. It will be interesting to see what happens with Freeman as the pressure goes.

On the bright side for Bucs fans, it looks like they werent the only ones rigging captain votes in their division.
After Cam said he wanted to be a captain in the offseason
They used to have 6 captains. 2 on offense, 2 on defense, and 2 on special teams
This year they for whatever reason (read: to get Cam elected) they made it so that it was the top 6 players voted in no matter what. So wow, Cam beat out a couple of special teamers
but it gets worse. Steve Smith and Jordan gross, who have been the captains on offense for several years, were AUTOMATIC CAPTAINS and therefore players were not allowed to vote for them.

Been used a fair bit in college ball. Its set up for a WR screen with the run option in Kelly's case. Seen it in the Uni game over here when we played Exeter - they failed miserably at it though!

Some good games on tv this and I don't have to go to work so can stay up. Patriots vs Jets tonight should be interesting? Wonder if Geno Smith has been getting buttfumble advice?
Mark Sanchez has also stated he beat out Smith to be the Jets starter. Should be back home for Manning vs Manning on Sunday and looking forward to the 49ers beating the Seahawks.
