Khan v Mayweather - 5th May 2014 - EDIT: THIS FIGHT IS ON
First topic message reminder :
2014-05-03 Floyd Mayweather Jr 45(26)-0-0
MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA 12
WBC welterweight title
bout subject to change & commission approval
I wonder where Boxrec get their info? They do call some fights that don't get made Anyone think this one is a goer.
I have a feeling Khan is next for Money May. I thought the fight might have been in the UK but I don't know what the BBBofC rules are on injecting pain killers. Floyd talking about fighting in the UK may just have been to stir up interest and gauge the reaction.
Anyway, Khan is often suggested as being the man with the foot speed and fast hands to trouble Mayweather. Can Virgil Hunter be the man to finally put together a plan that Khan is able to understand and stick to?
The first few rounds could be interesting.

Re: Khan v Mayweather - 5th May 2014 - EDIT: THIS FIGHT IS ON
Personally. I think these lists generally suffer from a bit of inherent bias. If you were presenting them as market research you would have to flag up that the universe of contributors make their living from researching historical figures of interest in boxing.
I'm not saying that an individual historian is not capable of objectivity. Just that if you spend your life following your passion for the boxers of yesterday, and unearthing fascinating stories of their remarkable lives and times and hardships, it's tough to not let that impact your judgement. Of course the counter argument is that if you are alive during the current era but more knowledgeable on past eras then you are best placed to comment. My experience in life is that people have nostalgia for their youth and their passions.
I find these lists invariably a little biased against modern day fighters. Ketchel, but no hagler or monzon? Dempsey top 20, no sweetpea? The guys giving their views know more about boxing history than me, I'm not calling their lists rubbish, just giving my view on why I think modern fighters have a tough time getting in.

You just hate to see other fighters ranked beside your heroes.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:"You can't take it that Tommy isn't there and Duran is"
Tommy wasn't in my list on the top 10 thread.......I don't have him in my top 20..
This guy is something.........
You run down Louis and Robbo because you LOVE Ali.
You hate Duran because he is rated so highly when your man Tommy is nowhere even though he whacked Roberto's to the canvas.
You always pick the winner. You have no time for your fallen heroes. You have no honour.
You try and break ever argument into simpleton terms and then place them on repeat for infinitity or until your favourite loses. This has been going on for approaching a decade now.

I get it. Well we can't have Robinson at the top seeing as he got smacked about during the latter stages of his career. Or Ali who lost to the mighty Berbick who lost in 2 to tyson.

Does Truss have Robinson at No.1?
He used to reserve that position for Ali.
He even wrote an article arguing that Floyd should be considered for top spot.
He's talked some cobblers over the years.

It would not surprise me if Money does ko Khan early. Trust Khan to get koed while Floyd's other 5 opponants ALL stayed on their feet. The only way for Khan to win this is to be smart and win the early rounds. If Floyd wins the first few rounds then Khan will have to chase him, get stupid, and then get sparked.Strongback wrote:Floyd Mayweather Sr:

Not a good fight for Mayweather to take at the moment. Khan hasnt fought in a while and looked shaky as hell at welterweight. He seems to have concentrating on getting his weiner out more than boxing lately. Looks like Mayweather is easing off.

He has 4 more fights left to honor. You can't go from Canelo to Khan its ridiculas.I know Khan has done some good work over there and adds excitment but its not a fight that will sell well in the US unless its held in Blighty where I see the hype machine going OTT.
As I have said before Garcia is the only name I can think of who ticks more boxes then Khan.
1) Hes Puerto Rican
2) Hes young and has proven himself
3) Hes from Philly
4) His dads nuts. Angel Garcia and Floyd (what did you say) senior great entertainment there.

Garcia would make more sense. Martinez and Golovkin at 154. Stipulate they cant they weigh more than 165 or something. Big fights. Khan is a soft option. Hauser will be sharpening his knife. Mayweathers balls are for the chop if Khan is up next.

I have no problem with the fight but the fact it will be PPV is what I think is wrong, as Truss often says every champion takes an easy option now and then.

At this stage of Mayweathers career, meh, whats the point in Khan. At least let the guy actually win a decent fight at welterweight first instead of taking him on when he is rusty and his own trainer is criticising his extra curriculur behaviour. Mayweather has 4 fights left. Make them count.

That's the problem and why he gets bad press, each and every one of his fights is a big event, there are no big fights left out there for him except for old Pacquiao.

3) He is from a Pakistani decent. Will always sell well from that point of view with a large contingency flocking stateside to see a muslim take on the worlds best??
4) Cant compete with that last one, because id rather have Angel vs Senior on the undercard.

The thing to consider with nationality is the representation in America, the PPV in this country won't be huge especially at 4 in the morning and from experience he has never drawn huge crowds in his american fights.

My automatic guess would be on SSBO he would at least get 400,000 buyers facing FLoyd even at 4AM.

Not so sure myself on that Alex, Mayweather obviously sees dollar signs in Khans eyes which is why he's going for it, i'll watch a re-run but i've no interest staying up to watch it.

Re: Khan v Mayweather - 5th May 2014 - EDIT: THIS FIGHT IS ON
Personally I would watch it. Purely because out of everyone else in the 140-154 weight division I would give Khan the best chance, purely due to his reach, hand speed, combinations and awkward run around footwork. Think Floyd will still win, but I think him against Garcia is an even bigger mismatch, even though he sparked Khan. Also, Khan is almost always in exciting fights, he may bring it out of Floyd to do something a little different. Possibly force Khan to fight on the inside or something, where he would absolutely smash Khan to smithereens.

That's the stupid thing as he showed against Hatton he's best damn inside fighter in the division anyway, he's the best from any range. He beat Alvarez, Cotto and Guerrero in different ways, he won't be losing for a while yet.

He has a lot of strings to his bow does Floyd, if he has to mix it up and fight a little bit closer he is more than willing to do it, as he showed against Judah and Mosley.

plus the Yanks pay 3-4 times more for their ppv. so 250,000 latin americans in the US is more valuable than 500,000 Brits.Hammersmith harrier wrote:The thing to consider with nationality is the representation in America, the PPV in this country won't be huge especially at 4 in the morning and from experience he has never drawn huge crowds in his american fights.
plus khan isn't that big a draw anyway, especially after such a ropey losing run of fights.

You would give Khan a better chance than Trout or Lara or Pacquiao? He should really be looking to push those kind of fights or else try to hammer out some kind of deal with Martinez or Golovkin if he wants to really make a big fight happen. Khan is a waste of time.

Lara is a no go, he's struggled with Angulo and Martirosyan two fights in a row now while Trout wont sell and Pacquiao is with top rank. The only options are the middleweight, Khan and Garcia, I expect him to fight three out the four anyway.

Re: Khan v Mayweather - 5th May 2014 - EDIT: THIS FIGHT IS ON
Khan is no big sell either. Hes the third or fourth best light welterweight with one dodgy welterweight fight. Mayweather should be looking for a tougher challenge. Trout would do fine. Laras recent form is no worse than Khan. He could make more of an effort to get a Pacquiao fight made. This is why people like Hauser drop the hammer on him and accuse him of cherry picking.
