Re: Open Championship Thread: Tee Times
Having supported a lot of PC and Mac products for the past 20 years I've definitely warmed to Apple. Certainly if you want an out of the box, high end computer for video editing etc then they are a great product and they do look great. The new Imacs are very funky and very good.
They are pricey though, and very irritating to repair sometimes. But that can be equally true of non Mac kit.
That said its my last week in the world of IT, finish on Thursday for a summer off before my teaching course starts. Cant say I'm going to miss it.

There's a rather pretentious element to apple kit, especially the laptops, usually due to the type of "arty" people who feel it's the only possible type of "PC" they can use.

Well to be fair for a while for a lot of designers it was. A fair few industry standard software types were Mac only and even now high end editing is either Avid or Final Cut and Final Cut is Mac only and Avid runs better on Macs. A stack of other software in the Post Production industry is all Mac geared and the plug in's they need are often not PC compatible.
Its not as bad as it used to be but the vast majority of professional design studios...and I've built and supported a fair few....all use Macs and they do it for a reason. It works.

Re: Open Championship Thread: Tee Times
If I must, although I would have thought it self-apparent. I find people who bang on about "Macs are better than your piece of scheiss PC" or "PCs are better than your overpriced piece of scheiss Mac" pretty childish. Yes, I use Macs (and have done for 20-odd years), but I also have an Android phone. I don't have a problem with PCs as such but I do have a problem with the scheiss that is Windows, in pretty much all of its guises. I have to use Windows devices, but only under sufferance.Davie wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Well, we've definitely identified a child.Davie wrote:We've found an iBoy

In addition, your assumption that I'm a blinkered Mac user who pretty much worships at their altar, to the exclusion of all else, is pretty daft don't you think?

Not with that stuff . It's awful. Credit to Jägermeister for (somehow!) popularising that cough syrup. I know he's celebrating but couldn't he have chosen something better than that?pedro wrote:"Shot" of the week?

Ahhhh I get it .. so I'm childish for having a pop at Apple (and the fanboys) but you're discerning for your dislike of Windows? Now THAT'S mature (sorry diggers for the capitals) ;-)
As for the accusation that I picked on you .. well you were the one who jumped in with the  when I game MY opinion of Apple gear - that was aimed at no one in particular
BTW - it may well be you are blinkered whether you know it or not. You may have USED Apple gear for 20 years but I've actually been in the software business for over 30 years, as user, support technician, programmer and trainer and in my professional opinion the world would be a very different (and lesser) place without Windows. The Microsoft empire keep their secret very well but I was privileged to work in partnership with them for a short while and got to see a very small portion of what went on behind the scenes of a Windows operating system .. and it really is unbelievable the technology they use - remember IT is still very much in its infancy in the grand scheme of things - yes there will be problems .. but compare what you can have at your fingertips with a meagre 30 years ago and you may think again - unless you really are blinkered

Personally, I prefer the design of a Mac, however, I'm restricted by software to use PC

XP and 7 are pretty good operating systems. I'm not a fan of 8 but it had its plus points, likewise Server 2012. Office 365 is a great product and really good value, 5 office license installs for every subscription and full exchange functionality. Pees all over Gmail.
I think Microsoft gets a lot if stick re licensing but to be honest Apple drag you down the same path one way or another. Plus their server software is garbage.
Cherry pick the best from both world and throw in a bit of Linux for the geeks out there and you have a whole lot of choice for every budget.
Its do simple for everyone compared to even 3 years ago its untrue and that's a good thing.

There are a number of Windows emulators for the Mac that in theory let you run PC software on it, but it's a bit like trying to eat a steak with a straw.

Parallels is OK Bob, prefer that to Bootcamp and its cheap. Not had any issues with it, used it for Mac users wanting to run Sage Accounts and a few other windows only apps.

Yes, you're childish for having a pop the way you did. What I did or didn't say in response is neither here nor there.Davie wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:If I must, although I would have thought it self-apparent. I couldn't really care less if you worked and know what's behind Windows. Your arguments re. the development of IT etc hold for any and all of the systems that're out there and don't really support your less-than-subtle assertion about Windows being great.
I give in - your ****'s obviously bigger than mine and we're way off topic now.
