Summer Transfer Window
First topic message reminder :
Sunderland are apparently on for will Buckley again this weekend. Another one from Brighton.
Also after Nacer Chadli from spurs and Jonas from Valencia - along with still trying to persuade fabio borini.

Can't really justify that money for him... but United couldn't justify £80m for Ronaldo... willing buyer Willing seller.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Best player in the world at 24, hugely marketable, our best player - Ronaldo was cheap at £80 million.
£75 million is more than double Di Maria's value, Madrid want rid of him for God's sake.
Should be getting a Suarez/Bale/Ronaldo for that type of cash. Not their stand in.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
The 75 million is actually Euros and equates to a little over £60m
still a lot of money though. Believe the the initial fee is around the £50m mark but add ons could see it raise by a further £10m
This is of course that the deal happens and its not just another goose chase

guardian £60 million €75 + €10 add ons (Total £68 million)

Yeah, was after the Swiss game. Too be fair, I didn't think he was all that bad as others made it sound out.. I mean, it was a very poor performance but at least he kept going to the end and constantly made himself available. Better then a player who does a disappearing act for 90 minutes.
He is a top player for me. Easily WC and I think United need a major purchase partly to give their other players a confidence boost that usually comes with such a signing.

Not much effort. Was during the Argentina-Swiss thread where everyone was harshly slagging off Di Maria after his shocker.

£75m is ridiculous. Thats nearly Ronaldo territory and a Ronaldo he isn't
Don't even think I'd have him for that especially when we're lacking elsewhere

Re: Summer Transfer Window
The point still stands to a degree that he'll now be a very pivotal player if he signs (still don't think he will) and he will be getting closer attention than he was in a team containing Bale and Ronaldo so might not shine like he did last year.

I wonder what formation United will try now. RVP, Rooney, Mata and Di Maria.
That's a pretty scary quartet for opponents to come up against even if the rest of the squad is patchy.

I'd think He'd play centrally for United. He just draws more player that way. He's a fantastic winger, but he's a lot better when he just takes the ball centrally and wreaks havoc

Re: Summer Transfer Window
He'll be playing wide Raf, LVG wanted a winger of his class so he could alter the formation, with Rooney and Mata already central it would be a huge waste to play him there.

Probably the best way to fit them in but rooney on the left and no Januzaj or Shaw in the side.
Interesting times anyway.

Look he's a fantastic winger, and will certainly work as one...But I'd have him over Mata in the final third... If you play both (is that definitely the idea?) then it does make sense to have him in the wings...

Re: Summer Transfer Window
It's not so much Mata that's the problem, it's the club captain who is ineffectual played out wide, an issue I do have with our signings and squad is the left footedness of it all.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Bull, you're the last of the people to be still calling for Kagawa!
Even BBC are reporting that Real Madrid are asking for £75 million. It will be absolutely ridiculous if Real Madrid get more than what they paid for James Rodriguez for a player they're not even bothered about keeping.
£50 million would be as high as I would have paid for Di Maria. Not sure he's in the bracket of players worth more than that. Suarez was the top scorer in Europe last year and went for £75 million.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
I'd go to £40 million.
Thats twice what they paid and they do not want him anymore. They are being ridiculous wanting us to finance a move for Falcao. At the end of the day let them sweat it out as no one else is in for him or has the money to buy him. It not like it is Hummels or Vidal or a player in our weakest areas - it is a guy who plays in the only area of the pitch we have decent players.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
How many number 7 shirts will Di Maria sell? Based on the Rodriguez to Madrid frenzy of shirt sales probably a lot.
If the transfer fee is £63m and as a result we get back in the top four then I don't give a foggiest on the price fee.
Would you rather us buy mediocre talent and fail to get in Europe for a 2nd season or buy one of the best in the world and make a statement?

I'll be honest, I'd much rather see us be doing this deal for a Hummels or Vidal. Nothing against Di Maria, great player, however, we're in more need elsewhere.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
I'd rather buy one of the best in the world - Di Maria isn't one of the best in the world.
We should be getting a genuine superstar for that money imo.
I think we have enough for top four without him.
In terms of shirt sales he would need to shift 1.3 million shirts to get to £64 million in sales, now that isn't profit or what ever cut we get from sales with nike this year and adidas next in the new deal. Also not taking his wages into account.
We need a centre half and a cm more than him.
He is a good player, but he's a luxury signing - not an essential one and this fee is twice his value.
Madrid will use this money to sign Falcao or something, one of the actual top players in the world - they are playing us for absolute mugs.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
For me he's up there as one of the best in the world, he's a player who can change a game and can play in a variety of roles, it's not an option of that we can only buy him and no other position so why not get him if available. And he's certainly more of a worldie than Falcao.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
And what happened to the belief you held that Utd wouldn't be able to acquire top level players due to no CL football?
This summer they've signed;
1 player from the Premier League team of the year.
2 players from clubs currently in the CL.
1 player from the European Champions (if as expected it's going through)
Add to that they're expected to buy the current Dutch player of the year and again from a CL club.
That CL bait really affecting our pull.

I'd far rather have Di Maria than Falcao, who if we did sign wouldn't be good enough and too old according to Ent. We buy one of the best wingers in the world and he's not good enough somehow. Ent just can't handle being proved spectacularly wrong so has to find another reason to moan.

If Utd spend £20m and somehow managed to acquire Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez, Iniesta, Hummels, Reus, Vidal and Gotze all on 50k a week wages then Ent would moan about it stifling the youth development for the club or that it meant he had to park further away to get to the ground.

Is Di Maria one of the best wingers in the world? He was massively inconsistent for Real Madrid and never really convinced as a winger, he had a great year last playing centrally.

Yeah I agree with Crimey here. Inconsistent as a winger, flourished in a Madrid side when Bale and Ronaldo left him plenty of room to roam into. Massive upgrade over Uniteds current wingers though.

We haven't signed anyone top level.
Di Maria, like mata, is being dumped by his club and we are the only ones with cash flow to purchase him.
Falcao is certainly more of a world class player than di Maria.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Look Di Maria is a quality quality player, and a huge upgrade over Utd's current wingers. You're signing a great player
Just it isn't the greatest area of need. You have to believe that LVG/Woodward realise that and will wrap up a deal for a CB/CM before the window closes. If they don't then serious questions need to be asked why this deal was prioritised before one for a greater area of need
